The Royals jumping ship...

A virus pandemic breaks out in the UK. Everyone is essentially on house arrest bar a few essential occasions. Businesses and workers facing going bust. People dying every day. Hospitals overwhelmed. Surely this would be a great moment for a morale boosting message from our beloved royals, who we pay to keep in the lap of luxury? Oh wait, a little recorded message has been deemed a health risk to the Queen (allegedly).

Oh well, they can always volunteer Buckingham Palace as a makeshift hospital or hub for supplies, etc, as I'm sure they want to do what they can for their beloved citizens, especially now theyve legged it out of London. Oh wait.

Seriously what are these people for and why do we pay for them again?

This thread is worth reading for skill with which the op's take down of allhuman and the others with their really poor arguments. Lot of lolling here!

yesterdayhasgone · 27/03/2020 15:14

in the monarchy but guess what, I'm still paying for them.

£1.24 last year according to Sky News - a bargain!

That isn’t a bargain at all. That’s a huge amount of money. Why is it only the cost of the royal family broken down that way in order to minimise their expense. There are so many “bargains” that could be got for that money, oh and the Irish presidency is two and a half times cheaper, hows that for a bargain.

500 staff to look after one old lady?

Do they get a good salary and pension? Jobs might be difficult to find in the current climate.

What a ridiculous way to excuse the absurdity/obscenity of all those staff for one old lady by mentioning the employment it gives to people. With that “bargain” £1.24 we could perhaps build a new hospital and make jobs available for......worthwhile jobs?

"Charles praised for ‘keeping calm and carrying on’ after contracting Covid-19"

Bad luck op.

Excuse the source but even that media whore Jenner is helping by donating.

metro.co.uk/2020/03/25/kylie-jenner-leaves-doctor-speechless-donates-1million-coronavirus-relief-efforts-12457828/

I don't give a damn about her motivation, I just care about the people who will benefit from it

And if the RF are doing the same, their PR gurus really need to let slip to the public.

Clavinova · 27/03/2020 15:19

I had never heard of the Irish president - he's not exactly representing Ireland on the 'world stage' is he? Was he allowed to meet Donald Trump for example?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 27/03/2020 15:22

we’ve been brainwashed into thinking the country needs a monachy and we couldn’t possibly live without them, without actually stopping to think how deeply wrong and abhorrent it is

Unfortunately that's where PR and spin gets us - and the RF's kind of money can pay for an awful lot of it

I've always believed they just hope we don't think too much about it and that the occasional moans when something goes wrong blow over ... and so far, unfortunately, it's working for them on the whole.
As a republican I obviously don't enjoy this, but it's important to be realistic and that involves accepting that a critical mass of disgust may take a little longer to develop. If he gets long enough at the job my money's on Charles driving the whole thing into oblivion, but time will tell ...

Wolfgirrl · 27/03/2020 15:22

@clavinova

One article from an obscure newspaper that still doesnt say anything about how they are tangibly helping.

@Clavinova

If you havent heard of the Irish President you need to read less court circulars and more real news.

Do you define meeting Trump as the threshold for being a worthy individual? That's a very low bar to set, it can even be achieved by the cast of Home Alone.

OP posts:
Clavinova · 27/03/2020 15:27

Do you define meeting Trump as the threshold for being a worthy individual?

No, but if you criticise someone in your speeches you should be able to put your argument face to face.

Lifeisabeach09 · 27/03/2020 15:27

@Clavinova

The link you posted just demonstrates what is already known and been said: that they, like a lot of wealthy elites, sit on charities and royal societies. Duties that they do year-round.

Not exactly helping and stepping up during this pandemic is it.

randomsabreuse · 27/03/2020 15:28

Not convinced the Buckingham Palace wiring system would be reliable enough to be useful... Think that's most of why it's due to be refurbished! Unless we want a headline like buck pal inferno kills Corona patients and medics. Conference centres way more suitable that old rabbit warren buildings

Mamamia456 · 27/03/2020 15:28

Lifesabeach - Amir Khan's building is empty, as far as I know the Royal family don't own any empty property and their properties are old so not ideal for a temporary hospital.

Lifeisabeach09 · 27/03/2020 15:28

Cute kids

Haha.

Mamamia456 · 27/03/2020 15:33

Wolfgirrl - What is it that you actually want the royal family to do?

Lifeisabeach09 · 27/03/2020 15:33

@mamamia456, I never said they should be used as hospitals. My point was the RF should be doing more than what they have been, utilising their vast wealth (in whatever form) to help their people during the crisis.
If you read the thread, there are plenty of examples of donations of money, resources, by the wealthy.
Our royal family come up short, when as our tax-funded leading family, they should be helping the most.

Clavinova · 27/03/2020 15:37

Prince William made an appeal on behalf of rough sleepers yesterday - how do you know that Amir Khan's donation wasn't prompted by that?

Clavinova · 27/03/2020 15:43

you need to read less court circulars and more real news

I did;

"Government demands ALL homeless people be housed after Prince William issues appeal."

"THE GOVERNMENT has asked councils in England to house all rough sleepers by the weekend, just one day after Prince William issued a plea for more help for Britain's homeless during the coronavirus crisis."

Wolfgirrl · 27/03/2020 15:50

@Mamamia456

The million dollar question.

Ultimately I would like them to step down and for us to become a Republicn but in this particular moment i want to see our head of state do something tangible to help the public through the most devastating time since ww2 . When I say tangible, I doubt mean tweeting or releasing videos. I mean something like:

  1. William reprising his role as an air ambulance pilot. Why not? Nobody answers this.
  2. Prince Charles (for example) contributing food grown by the Duchy to food banks
  3. Making a gesture of goodwill such as forfeiting next year's sovereign grant as we may well be in recession again
  4. The Queen making a proper address to the public, to buoy the spirits of her fans (mainly the elderly)
  5. Offering some of of their stately homes to be used as accommodation for NHS staff that dont want to go home and endanger their family
  6. Offering Buckingham Palace as premises or hubs for local charities, etc

I'm sure there are many other things they can do, they're just a few.

Something to show they care enough to part with their money and time, which is what they clearly expect the public to do when they do their half hearted charity appeals.

OP posts:
Wolfgirrl · 27/03/2020 15:50

@Clavinova

With his family having an enormous taxpayer funded empty palace, why doesnt he offer to house rough sleepers himself? Save us a bit of cash?

OP posts:
yesterdayhasgone · 27/03/2020 15:51

I had never heard of the Irish president - he's not exactly representing Ireland on the 'world stage' is he? Was he allowed to meet Donald Trump for example?

And you think a 92 year old averagely educated woman should represent Britain on the worlds stage? What an embarrassment. The reason you’ve probably never heard of the Irish President is because he doesn’t have a huge family of hanger ons who think their views on anything is of any relevance to the world and doesn’t have the huge self entitlement that the royal family have. He just gets on quietly with his job and doesn’t have umpteen palaces and castles at his disposal.

Btw Ireland’s had 6 American presidential state visits, so don’t try and belittle their relevance on the worlds stage please.

Lifeisabeach09 · 27/03/2020 15:52

Do you really think the government is finding homes for the homeless because PW pressed for it?

According to the article I read, it was ministers and various charities...

www.theguardian.com/world/2020/mar/27/ministers-asking-english-councils-to-house-all-rough-sleepers-says-charity

But, now, maybe, Buckingham Palace can be put to good use....

TheSandman · 27/03/2020 15:55

"THE GOVERNMENT has asked councils in England to house all rough sleepers by the weekend, just one day after Prince William issued a plea for more help for Britain's homeless during the coronavirus crisis."

No inside knowledge on display there then. "I say, lackey, what are the bods at Number 10 going to do tomorrow eh?"

Or, more likely, the Department for Maintaining the Status Quo synchronises what the royals 'plea' for and what the Government are going to actually do.

"Oh for fuck's sake, Your Highness, don't ask for more ventilators...! how about a plea to look after the homeless - lots of 'Diana' points there - and the boys at Whitehall don't actually have to DO anything. We'll just pass the buck on down to the Councils and the public. Our hands are clean if they don't get housed and you come out looking like you give a shit. It's perfect!"

Clavinova · 27/03/2020 15:58

When I say tangible, I doubt mean tweeting or releasing videos.

Another 5,000 views on that Sophie Wessex video - I can't keep up it's so popular. Grin

Care to actually answer my points? Why cant they do those things? Are you starting to exhaust your reserves of unrelated answers?
