Tesco hour for nhs workers not going as planned!

This is my local Tesco this morning (I did not take the photo). They opened for the first hour for nhs staff and vulnerable. This is what it resulted in!

I am a key worker too, I am struggling to get
Essentials to feed my family. I just can't believe what is happening!

The time for Elderly shoppers - they might be there with a younger relative to push the trolley, pick shopping, drive them.

My DDad is 83 and I know he would've been completely overwhelmed in the shops the way they are at the moment .

Luckily he has help with shopping and if he needs to shop there's a Co-Op and an Iceland .

As an aside - the number of NHS Staff in Uniform at Tesco !

What rational decides it is ok to wear your Uniform either before a shift (change when you get to work) after a shift ( cange before you leave) or during a shift (don't shop during a shift)
PPE does not cover copletely and there's a reason they are washed at 60c.

( Wearing Uniform outside of work is a particular bugbear of mine . But in this climate of CV? Bloody Hell)

Just been out our local supermarket is restocking. They stopped trolleys a few days back and only baskets. Not many people, and they had veg bread etc. No bog roll obv. Not to boast or whatever but try to reassure, supplies are out there people need to stop stockpiling.

How Italians are shopping according to Piers Morgan

All click and collect are booked out for three weeks here.

If all stores were click and collect only, and all staff were filling the orders, there be more slots available.

VivaLeBeaver · 22/03/2020 15:17

I nipped into b&q today to get veg seeds as we’re thinking long term. I wore a ffp3 mask and disposable gloves and don’t care about the funny looks.

But it was heaving, mainly seemed to be people buying flower bulbs and plants!

Others though had obviously already had the veg seed idea as hardly any left!

MarshaBradyo · 22/03/2020 15:18

Oh no

VivaLeBeaver · 22/03/2020 15:24

And this is inside our local Tesco this morning before 10am. They started off nhs staff only and by 9:30 am apparently caved in and let everyone in. Store manager said there were 3000 people inside! I was not there, not my photo.

Viva my goodness that is crazy

Theyweretheworstoftimes · 22/03/2020 15:35

The UK population has purchased £1bn worth of food in a week.

What the actual @^*%?

£1bn

MarshaBradyo · 22/03/2020 15:37

How long does it take to ramp up deliveries. If they don’t operate at full capacity all the time (say early morning) then it’s easier to increase.

New vans no idea.

KnobJockey · 22/03/2020 15:37

@2020newme I don't know how handy it is to where you live, but my sister has been to the Sutton road Aldi today and said they had pretty much everything but toilet roll in- might be worth passing on.

Doublethesarcasm · 22/03/2020 15:45

If all stores were click and collect only, and all staff were filling the orders, there be more slots available.

@pertella where are all the refridgerated vans going to come from? All the extra drivers, not everyone drives. Also the training for a delivery drivers happens over 2/3 weeks with them buddying up.
It's not quite so simple unfortunately.

CKoRn · 22/03/2020 15:48

Yep, this isn't surprising and most of those people are likely not NHS workers or vulnerable. People can't follow simple instructions and believe that they are somehow exempt and special. (Look up optimism bias)

I hope they bring about a lockdown and only one person per household can go out for food every so many days.
Obviously, how they'll enforce it...? Army or police? Yes, may seem like a waste of their time now but a few weeks down the line when 10% of the people in that picture need hospitalisation, won't be a waste of time then..

No forward thinking with this government.

Gingerkittykat · 22/03/2020 16:17

How much would the nation normally spend on food?

You also need to factor in the fact people are not eating at school or work and all the meals that would have been eaten outside the home to work out how much higher than normal this is.

VisitingtheInfidel · 22/03/2020 16:49

I work in Tesco and it was absolutely ridiculous this morning. Everyone was queuing right on top of each other waiting to get in. Although it was for NHS workers etc. and they were checking ID’s they were letting entire family groups (Mum, Dad, Grandparents, three teenagers and next door neighbour!!!) in with multiple trolleys. People were pushing and shoving and grabbing. One if our dot com pickers was hurt and nearly knocked over by a man who decided her trolly was in his way and rammed her with it. There was absolutely no attempt at keeping a safe distance from each other and people were coughing into their hands and touching everything.
There were kids running riot all over the place and most of them were coughing and snotty too.
We are supposed to be restricting to 3 items of things which apparently means 3 of every type of mince, every type of chicken, every type of cereal etc, etc. There was pretty much nothing left once they’d been through.
Once people saw that it was going to take forever to get through the checkouts a number of them just abandoned their full trolleys. Of course with the huge crowds it took ages to identify which ones had been abandoned and which were just waiting for their owners to grab another armful of stuff. Many of them had cold stuff in them and if it’s been out of the chillers for more than 20 minutes it has to be thrown away.
I am an absolute wreck today. These idiots are supposed to be the ones looking after the sick and their appalling behaviour put me and my staff in serious danger of contracting Coronavirus. In addition I have never been talked to so rudely in my entire career as I was this morning.

shivermetimbers77 · 22/03/2020 16:52

That's awful VistingTheInfidel. So sorry you had to experience that!

unhappyclap · 22/03/2020 16:54

@VisitingtheInfidel this sounds awful. sorry you've had to go through that shit

ScribblyGum · 22/03/2020 16:56

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 22/03/2020 16:58

The UK population has purchased £1bn worth of food in a week.

And I reckon a lot of that will go off before it’s eaten!

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 22/03/2020 17:00

I had to do some shopping for my nan today, and had a brainwave - we have a M&S Food in a small shopping park that is rarely busy, so I thought the chances of having to queue for long would be minimal. There was no queue at all, only a handful of people in there except me, and it was fully stocked on most things except loo roll. They had a range of nappies and different baby milks, and it was very civilised. Much better than DS's attempt at a 6am Tesco run yesterday where he queued for an hour to get in and shelves were being emptied like people were on Supermarket Sweep.

cptartapp · 22/03/2020 17:14

Chaos in our city Tesco. Facebook posts had advertised opening for an hour browsing at 9am for an hour for NHS staff, yet the website states store only opens at 11am. I tried to query yesterday whether it was 9-10 or 10-11 for NHS but couldn't get through.
Suspecting a cock up somewhere, we turned up at 9.30 and got in showing our ID, but it was obvious doors had opened at 9am. It was heaving. Queueing down the aisles. Got most stuff we needed but still rows of empty shelves. On leaving just before 10am staff had formed a one in one out system to stem the tide and there was a queue of almost 200 NHS looking confused and angry as we wheeled past them with our prized goods.

BeetrootRocks · 22/03/2020 17:16

The supermarkets need to get their stuff sorted.

People shouldn't be panic buying

But wtf at bizarre msg. 1 hour 'browsing' is just what NHS staff need

BeetrootRocks · 22/03/2020 17:16

Where are ideas like priority delivery for key workers

BeetrootRocks · 22/03/2020 17:17

Possibly hard to police but still.

stairway · 22/03/2020 17:19

I went to my local Tesco this morning as NHS. It wasn’t quite as bad as som of these photos though it was much busier than I was expecting. There was also quite a few people with a dry continuous cough.
