Tesco hour for nhs workers not going as planned!

astraea · 22/03/2020 11:37

This is my local Tesco this morning (I did not take the photo). They opened for the first hour for nhs staff and vulnerable. This is what it resulted in!

I am a key worker too, I am struggling to get
Essentials to feed my family. I just can't believe what is happening!

I’m not an NHS worker. I am a key worker though. I will be at work at 7am until 5pm tomorrow. No way I will be able to get any shopping as nothing on the shelves when I finish. DH will be working from home and being there for our autistic son. We are hoping that when he gets hungry enough he will eat something other than his staple foods.

Today I have seen the pictures of supermarkets in Italy, France and Spain. Today I am ashamed of how we, the British people, have reacted to this crisis.

EverydayLife · 22/03/2020 12:11

Plus all the stores are doing different hours or days for various people. It is confusing.

MerryDeath · 22/03/2020 12:12

crazy. just got out of my local asda which had some bare patches but otherwise absolutely fine and everyone perfectly pleasant.

ch3rrycola · 22/03/2020 12:13

Doing this hours is making it worse. They think of the nhs elderly will get all the food what about meeeeee?.
Then panic buy even more

AlexaAmbidextra · 22/03/2020 12:13

They now give 30 minutes for NHS followed by 1 hour for elderly/vulnerable, so they are not having them in the store together

This is the wrong way around though. The elderly/vulnerable should be in first when the store is clean. Not after those who may have been in contact with the virus. These stores really need to consult an infection control professional and stop making up their own rules.

Autumnchill · 22/03/2020 12:13

I went to Tesco at 9.30 to purely use the recycling bins and people were queuing for parking spots. Highly doubt every single person in there was entitled to be there. People have no shame.

Went to local shop to collect parcel and they had all the essentials.

Cam77 · 22/03/2020 12:14

How anyone can look at that photo and not get angry at this useless sorry excuse for a GOVERNment (job description is actuslly in the name would you believe) is beyond me.

soundsystem · 22/03/2020 12:15
  • They definitely need to bring in bouncers and do badge checks, single file. They stores have security already so it shouldn't be difficult to implement en masse.*

This

And if they need additional temporary security staff, there are plenty of people with SIA licences and no work given bars/nightclubs are closed

bookmum08 · 22/03/2020 12:16

I don't think these specific hours for specific people is working. They should just keep the supermarkets open to all and then people won't panic and all go at the same time. I have to collect a prescription. The pharmacy is inside Sainsburys. I (luckily) don't need to a food shop at the moment but I need that prescription. I am worried I will end up in a queue of hundreds of people just to get through the door.

WeAllHaveWings · 22/03/2020 12:16

Some of our local shops have put out fb posts to say they can put aside food for nhs which they can then pick up whenever they want.

dh was in one yesterday and the owner said the wholesellers are not running out of anything and if there is anything he needs he can pick it up next time he goes and call him when it is in, says they have loads of everything that is in shortage. So dh has ordered a 5KG box of chicken for me, my mum and dsis to share. 👍

ssd · 22/03/2020 12:16

Hellish. Dh works for a large supermarket, am terrified.

iheartislesofwight · 22/03/2020 12:17

it might be just me but that photo looks like it was taken in a shopping mall judging by the glass walls either side.
still disturbing if this is a current photo and not just something uploaded onto social media by a random scaremongering.

Tigger83 · 22/03/2020 12:17

Can I just suggested that rather than use the big supermarkets where possible use independents. My amazing greengrocer has been so helpful and will deliver or I can collect from his unit due to being pregnant. He is prioritising care home delivers and deliveries to the elderly and vulnerable first. I have found a local butcher who can deliver or again offers the same service. My milkman is delivering extra milk, eggs and bread for me. I'm using amazon prime where I can to buy groceries but having to buy some in bulk which is fine or local shops. I've been so impressed by the independents and their attitudes in putting vulnerable customers first I will be supporting them after all this is over. Im trying to support my local community as well as keep my family safe. It took a little while to source these companies but boy is it worth it for the peace of mind.

I also acknowledge I won't be able to get everything. I will need to be creative and work within what I can get.

astraea · 22/03/2020 12:18

@iheartislesofwight

It's outside a Tesco extra which is located within a shopping centre. The queues are specifically for Tesco and it was taken this morning

woodhill · 22/03/2020 12:19

It would be better if they did more deliveries now or click and collect. None is available

Even set up a phone in service for elderly or non internet people to do an order?

Menora · 22/03/2020 12:20

I don’t have any independent shops. I live rurally and the only things near me is a dentist and hairdresser and then a large supermarket

changedmyname2019 · 22/03/2020 12:20

@astraea yes Hull.
I've been lucky as my local smallish shops have had a lot of stock still. But the supermarkets are horrendous.

HonestlyItsFine · 22/03/2020 12:20

Yep- the large stores killed off the independent shops in my town. The greengrocer and butchers have long gone.

iheartislesofwight · 22/03/2020 12:21

drip feed, your opening post suggested this was inside tescos and is therefore misleading.

BeetrootRocks · 22/03/2020 12:21

You didn't take the photo?

Are you 100% sure it is what is being said?

I've seen loads of snaps circulating which are not what/ when purported to be.

I mean maybe it is but are you totally sure, like you know and trust the person who took it.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 22/03/2020 12:22

I normally avoid CV threads, but just popping in to say there's been a huge fight outside our local Sainsburys this morning. Apparently they're getting endless very obvious chancers who've "forgotten" ID of any sort or are just claiming to have a desperately ill child to feed, and they've kicked off massively when refused entry

astraea · 22/03/2020 12:23

@BeetrootRocks

Yup, I trust this was taken this morning. Also spoke to a couple of friends who went to try and get food who confirmed it was this ridiculous! Another photo has been posted of when the crowd started building this morning

All supermarkets offering click and collect should do so immediately. That will give stores a chance to restock, control access to stock, control numbers attending and allow others to access in store pharmacies etc. Everyone, whether NHS etc. or not can have a chance to keep topped up.

user1497207191 · 22/03/2020 12:25

Yep- the large stores killed off the independent shops in my town.

So did the people who chose the supermarkets rather then local independents! Funny how so many people are now flocking to their small independent shops now things are desperate. I hope this is a huge wake up call to everyone!

Alialialiali · 22/03/2020 12:25

Hey guys what's the problem? Everyone's going into lockdown so they need supplies. /sarc
