Tesco hour for nhs workers not going as planned!

astraea · 22/03/2020 11:37

This is my local Tesco this morning (I did not take the photo). They opened for the first hour for nhs staff and vulnerable. This is what it resulted in!

I am a key worker too, I am struggling to get
Essentials to feed my family. I just can't believe what is happening!

It’s St Stephen’s in Hull and even though it’s in a shopping centre, that end is usually pretty empty - it’s a huge Tesco so hardly ever seems crowded even at busy times. Never seen even 10% of that amount of people in that part.

2020newme · 22/03/2020 12:52

My NNN is a nurse. She tried to go to Tesco this morning for the NHS special, after finishing a 12 hour shift. She came back in tears, couldn't even get in. There were actually hundreds of people pushing and shoving to get in. They were giving out raffle tickets so when your number band was called, you could then enter.

I have offered her anything she needs (if I have it) but she says she needs so much, she will have a sleep and then go out again.

Why people have to go out in large groups, making the situation far worse is beyond me. It's all really shocking.

Flaxmeadow · 22/03/2020 12:54

They’re going to have to start putting the military in supermarkets soon

Needed so much right NOW

koshkatt · 22/03/2020 12:56

What is this utter madness? Everything is pretty much as normal where we live although I did notice that loo rolls were in short supply and deodourant too! Everything else ok.

We live very rurally though so I gues the population is smaller and older.

Healthyandhappy · 22/03/2020 12:56

Green grocers
Butchers
All deliver

MRex · 22/03/2020 12:58

Having dedicated longer time slots would make more sense for key workers and for vulnerable groups. In some areas there are so many vulnerable that it seems the shops are getting too crowded for just an hour anyway.

Monday morning, Wednesday morning, Sunday morning - elderly and disabled only
Tuesday morning, Friday morning - NHS only
Thursday morning, Sunday afternoon - other key workers only
Saturday all day, Monday to Friday afternoons - everyone else
Delivery slots with larger deliveries allowed subject to verifying the organisation - people running care homes, carers of vulnerable groups etc.

What would also be helpful would be dedicated click & collect or delivery slots for vulnerable groups, including the boxes of basics that have been mentioned but not yet materialised. Currently there is no way of highlighting need, based on my profile the supermarkets can't know that one delivery is for my elderly DP, another for elderly DPIL, one for an elderly aunt and one for us (social distancing but not suspected to be infected nor as vulnerable as the parents so could be bumped if needed).

Eleanorrrelephant · 22/03/2020 12:59

Absolute insanity right there. Shocking how thick some people are

middleager · 22/03/2020 12:59

Christ.

MintyMabel · 22/03/2020 13:00

All supermarkets offering click and collect should do so immediately

All click and collect are booked out for three weeks here.

middleager · 22/03/2020 13:02

Our local Tesco is like this yet in some parts of the country they are not seeing what we see.

Im in the West Mids a CV hotspot. Yet my SIL in affluent part of Bristol can get everything, no queues.

Postcode lottery and panic buying

chomalungma · 22/03/2020 13:02

This really does need some leadership.

Somehow a system needs to be developed so everyone is able to get to a shop and only get a certain amount per week of certain items.

No chance to get to another shop in that week - so no going to Tescos and then Sainsburies. No chance to buy more than you need.

It's much more difficult in the days of many supermarkets, cars etc - compared to WW2 and the local shops. But something needs to be done.

People cannot be relied upon to think of others.

MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 22/03/2020 13:02

Have any of you saying that delivery or click+collect should be increased actually tried it atm?

I have a delivery every week. Last week I ordered £52 worth of shopping - £18 worth turned up. I've actually stopped online grocery shopping for now because it's just not working.

user1333796 · 22/03/2020 13:04

Is this London? I've just been to my local Sainsbury's (not London, but a city) and there were no queues, didn't have any milk other than goats milk, and a few empty shelves but had plenty of other things. Fresh fruit and veg, fresh bread, meat, even paracetamol. I've been to several shops over the last 2 weeks and had a lot of choice but the local Facebook groups keep saying otherwise. I was in a frozen food store where every shelf and freezer was full, but a group of young adults came in ranting and raving there was no pasta because of selfish twats. I feel like the situation isn't as bad as is being spoken about on social media.

user1333796 · 22/03/2020 13:06

I'm not saying it's not happening by the way, but I think the extent of it is much smaller than people are saying. Everyone local thinks it's terrible here, and it isn't.

defthand · 22/03/2020 13:07

I’m sorry, they’re combining NHS staff and vulnerable people for the same time slot?

NHS staff who are most likely to be exposed early? 😱

These groups need to be segregated.

Peaseblossom22 · 22/03/2020 13:10

Clearly we are a nation of selfish unmentionables. They will have to close all the supermarkets except one in each area and put troops on the door. No more than 10-20 people at a time ( depending on size of supermarket) . Some sort of permit ( in France I think you have to get one off internet either on phone or print) with priority for vulnerable . Only baskets no trolleys

cushioncovers · 22/03/2020 13:16

I went to our local big Tescos for the Nhs hour this morning and it was heaving and then we all hit the tills at the same time and were stood close to one another waiting to pay for the food. It was chaos. 🙄

Wiaa · 22/03/2020 13:16

Well I hope that's fake news because thats just plain stupid.

chomalungma · 22/03/2020 13:16

Boris can see what is happening. I know he is afraid of imposing things but this is what Government is for at a time like this.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 22/03/2020 13:21

Utter madness to think this wouldn't be the outcome of the 1 hour bollocks. Why not 8-12, 3 days week for nhs and 2 days for elderly.

Our nearest Tesco Express has full fridge of milk and loads of bread still at 11am. I wouldn't go near the massive superstore now.

sallyedmondson · 22/03/2020 13:23

Have just spoken to my brother in law in Brittany.
No panic buying there and its a virus hot spot. They do have to have permits to be out but are still allowed to shop.
Maybe its because its more rural. He did'nt know what its like in Paris.
Anyone else know? I wonder if its a British thing or just a city thing.

MrsWhites · 22/03/2020 13:23

Our Tesco was the same too from photographs I have seen. I also think there are people taking advantage of the situation, I know at least one nurse who has posted about going to the key worker hour this morning to stock up when she only works 2 days a week! This for me defeats the point, surely this hour should be for key workers at the very front line who are working long/unsociable hours. Although I understand that this is almost impossible for supermarkets to police.

dottiedodah · 22/03/2020 13:26

Behind a complete Bell end at the garage .Filled up his car then took out 4 Jerry cans and filled them up too! People are so bloody selfish.Same MeMeMe personality as the food stockpilers .Guy the other day £350.00 of shopping FFS!Where do they store it all ,thats what I want to know. Mean spirited to the core!

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 22/03/2020 13:29

Tesco opened for nhs staff between 9-10, fine, but the shelves were empty, the staff were wonderful and doing their best, however, we were told the shelves can’t be stocked and the tills can’t open until 10 at10 the rampage descended, I came away with tulips & wine, no, bread, no meat, no loo roll, no eggs. I have decided to live off chocolate eggs and use the box as ....well, enough said.
