This is my local Tesco this morning (I did not take the photo). They opened for the first hour for nhs staff and vulnerable. This is what it resulted in!

I am a key worker too, I am struggling to get
Essentials to feed my family. I just can't believe what is happening!

I'm late 60s, DH is mid 70s with alot of underlying health problems. I live 200 miles away from family, I live in a cul de sac of 8 hours and only one has people younger than me so I don't feel I could ask them for help, they can't shop for 8 households! I can't get a delivery slot for love nor money.

I'm OK for the moment but I feel like crying, do I go out and shop, I could I feel fine and very fit and healthy but risk bringing an infection back that will probably kill my husband or do we sit here and starve.

I'm sick of being told there is enough food, of Boris asking people to be considerate. I know he doesn't give a damn about us but is he seriously going to let us all die of starvation?

ScribblyGum · 22/03/2020 13:31

Jesus wept.

As soon as I started receiving all the multiple emails form the supermarkets I knew this would happen.

Just look at the absolute state of that photo. Just goes to show that NHS staff are just as idiotic and selfish as the rest of the population.

How many people in that crush are actually front line staff dealing with the influx of patients? People doing long shifts in horribly stressful situations trying to keep the boat afloat who need that time to get in and out of the shops as quickly as possible? And how many are admin staff, HCPs working miles away from the front line...
I bet £100 there’s someone in there whose job is typing up dermatology clinic letters.

Not all of you need this opportunity fgs. Have a bit of respect for your colleagues who are.

And don’t @ me with “my job is terribly important don’t you know”. I’m front line NHS as is DH but we’re not in A&E, ITU or working in the medical/respiratory wards. I’ll be going to the supermarket with the rest of the population.

Green grocers Butchers All deliver Really useful if your town has them, unfortunately mine doesn't. I don't know if they would delivery from the next town, they are probably busy enough with their own people.

Pebbles574 · 22/03/2020 13:32

There's a problem with these sort of photos circulating in that they create the situation they show by panicking people.
What we really need is people taking photos of all the food shops that are operating relatively normally instead.
I went to M&S on the high street and it was calm.
Generally, if you avoid the places with big car parks you will avoid the panic buyers...

Just seen a post on my FB with a very minor middle manager and her thank you flowers from Tesco. You putting on shitey PPE and putting your hands on patients with this virus? Didn’t think so.

You wear high heels to work, this hour in the supermarket isn’t for you. Twat.

Oysterbabe · 22/03/2020 13:35

Where I am in Bristol it's OK, you can get most things you need easily enough.

IpeartreeI · 22/03/2020 13:43

Ah, the poor government. They have absolutely no clue about the population of this country and how many people behave now. Quietly cocooned in their Waitrose, yoga, fresh coffee, nanny, private school bubbles. Meanwhile, in the outside world.......in my area we have gangs roaming the streets at night breaking into cars and peoples back gardens, yobs setting fire to things and kids on bikes getting together and running into pensioners who are trying to get to the shops.

Noodlenosefraggle · 22/03/2020 13:43

Where the hell are these people storing all this stuff they are buying? Are they just buying and buying without using up what they have? Its ridiculous! They will all get coronovirus while out panic buying. I also bet they arent all NHS frontline staff. We need army lockdown and food parcels of basics straight from the distribution centre to the vulnerable and frontline staff. Morrisons are doing this, I think.

Jerseygaly · 22/03/2020 13:44

I think the issue is Many families would have someone vulnerable.
It incl high bmi, asthmatics, diabetics, etc etc

I actually think elderly and the are both high risk for carrying the virus and giving it to the rest of us.
We need to move to everyone getting click and collect at least. So as few people as poss are touching the food. Ideally Tesco staff would then wear gloves and masks.

1.5 million people work in the NHS.

Which of those should be able to get priority access?

WhatICallMyUsername · 22/03/2020 13:45

I live in Hull and work for the NHS. Someone from work has posted the problem was caused as Tesco advertised the stores were open 9-10 for NHS staff but because this store is within a shopping centre they couldn't do that so had to do their priority hour 10-11 but everyone turned up for 9am.

There should have been more specific rules to it. The person I know went and is not a key worker, works 9am-5pm in admin and has plenty of time to do her shopping

In these terms I could have gone (I didn't) even though I am currently on maternity leave except I have no clue where my ID badge is

andyoldlabour · 22/03/2020 13:45

This happened yesterday in Whitstable. I reckon the pub should lose its licence immediately and fined heavily.
I cannot believe some folks stupidity and selfishness.

Doilooklikeatourist · 22/03/2020 13:45

This was on the local covid 19 support group on Facebook , so it’s not all bad

Got to say well done to Tesco's XXXXXXXXXfor what they did to the NHS staff today. Giving them the round of applause and given them all a bunch of flowers when they entered to do their shopping before they went to work or finished their shifts. Don't think any other supermarket did that today and they made them feel so appreciated. Was nice to see my partner come home with a smile on her face before she goes to do a long shift with everything that's happened. The smallest things can make a world of difference. Well done Tesco's XXXXXXXXXX

HonestlyItsFine · 22/03/2020 13:46

It's not just NHS staff. It's also other people hoping to get in and get "theirs"

PinkSpring · 22/03/2020 13:49

It wasn't JUST for NHS, it was also for staff of Tesco.

combatbarbie · 22/03/2020 13:50

@BentNeckLady what do you think that would achieve? Genuinely interested....

ScribblyGum · 22/03/2020 13:51

@chomalungma engage common sense. It’s really not that hard. If you work in the NHS it’s obvious those who are having to step up big time to deal with this, those whose work is busier than usual (most of us) and a few fortunate ones who there is no change at all to their work load.
If you’re in the latter two categories that hour isn’t for you.

Petiolaris · 22/03/2020 13:52

My Dad is nearly 80 and went to the “elderly hour” but got nothing. He said it was packed with young people and the staff weren’t stopping them, and he was afraid so he came out.

GabsAlot · 22/03/2020 13:56

it seems its down to managment then-some are enforcing some arent

shivermetimbers77 · 22/03/2020 13:57

It was a total shambles in my local Tesco NHS hour. I won't chance that again! Didnt see many NHS staff IDs either.

GabsAlot · 22/03/2020 14:00

i also though tesco had limits on everything now-thjey shoujld make sure the special hour is ready stocked

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 22/03/2020 14:11

We went this morning (Tesco)
I really don't want to be going round various different shops so a regular week shop , no stock piling or panic buys , made sense .

You cannot have both - Just buy what you need and Do not go out . If you buy what you need for 2-3 days , you'll need to go out in 2-3 days time . It ain't rocket science !

Tesco didn't put signs up. We joined The Queue . Then found the NHS Queue was one side , the Queue for Vunerable Shoppers was the other side . So a mad dash ensued .
There was a group in the middle who hung about then bulldozed their way in Hmm

ID Badges were checked . They let in a small group of each queue at a time .

Inside it was calm. The shop was pretty well stocked , no-one seemed to be bulk buying - though they had a 1/Customer on loo roll several trolleys had multi-packs .

We had to queue round the outer aisles , the ends of the aisle were blocked to stop people pushing in.
Then shoppers were sent to checkouts in turn.

This was the first episode , they'll hopefully iron out any issues .

lowlandLucky · 22/03/2020 14:13

Tesco Scotland are not allowing NHS staff to have the first hour on Sunday's, it is oly for staff in Wales and England

SallyLovesCheese · 22/03/2020 14:20

This kind of thing makes me angry and sad. I'm sorry for your dad, Petiolaris, it's awful the way supermarkets are "handling" this. The problem is, there's no ID for someone who is vulnerable.

It's absolutely right that NHS workers doing shifts and working long hours should also get priority. However, I'm a teacher, just coming out of self-isolation. We really need to stock up, but now the supermarkets are only open first thing for NHS workers, I won't be able to get to the supermarket until after school. I'm just hoping there are some staples left to buy at that point, because DH has to self-isolate for another 7 days and my next day off is Saturday. I'm not working from home so can't nip out whenever.

It must be a similar story for other key workers who aren't NHS yet working long hours in the workplace.
