To think Tom Hanks is insensitive

Talking about having "blah" days after his quick recovery. I'm pleased he and his wife are on the mend but not all of us will have the luxury of lazing around in £ million plus beach front multi room houses. The reality for most who get the virus will be nothing like.

OP posts:
OhLook · 18/03/2020 09:42

I found his comment very reassuring, it honestly made me feel very relieved that someone his age with diabetes isn't on the verge of death. Its given me some hope.

Fespital · 18/03/2020 09:43

Robin Williams had a multi million dollar house and still died by suicide so YABU.

Zfactorstar · 18/03/2020 09:43

There are many stories from people out there that attest that Tom Hanks is considered a genuinely kind, considerate human being. He is well loved for a reason.

JellyfishandShells · 18/03/2020 09:44

Some people, with enormous chips on their shoulder and not an empathetic scrap of humanity , will find anything to be bitter about. It doesn’t support your ‘ all is awful, it’s the end of days’ scenario so you have to have a pop at someone who is feeling run down after an illness, in the way that everyone feels post virally.

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 18/03/2020 09:44

What did you want him to do? Should he have moved into a three bed semi and relied on the health service? Wise up! The man is rich, can afford the best of care and lives in a massive house. So what? Do you have anything to say about the queen bunkering down in one of her fabulous buildings, surrounded by wealth and the best if care, or is that different.

He’s doing nothing the rest of us wouldn’t do if we had the money and good luck to him. I’m sitting in my rundown semi with my vulnerable adult child who will be on quarantine until this goes away. I’ve went from having a successful business to not having ANY money in my bank and no idea if I can keep the electric meter running and I still say good luck to him, because I’m not a jealous, immature brat.

OhCaptain · 18/03/2020 09:44

What?! Confused

finn1020 · 18/03/2020 09:45

🙄

Quartz2208 · 18/03/2020 09:46

You are focusing on the wrong part. The reality of self isolation/lockdown/quarantine will be different because he has the money and the space

The virus though doesnt discriminate and treat him any different to the above, as a 60 something diabetic man his experience is incredibly reassuring

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 18/03/2020 09:46

I'm glad he's ok. Get over yourself.

MaitlandGirl · 18/03/2020 09:47

Considering he’s stuck here with just his wife with him, his other family are in the US, I’m not surprised he’s having a blah day. He must be so worried about what might happen to his family and there’s stuff all he can do to help.

On house arrest in a strange house, in a strange country is not going to be fun for anyone, millionaire or not.

neveradullmoment99 · 18/03/2020 09:48

Well i agree. The illness might have been bad, yes but he can afford a personal doctor etc. Don't see him fighting over a ventilator. It will be nothing like others reality.

Waspnest · 18/03/2020 09:50

The reality for most people who get it is that they will not even know they've had it so I don't know where you're getting your info from.

I'm just glad to hear of anyone who's recovered from it, particularly older people with health issues.

feelingverylazytoday · 18/03/2020 09:51

Glad to hear he's recovering.Yes it does give a small glimmer of hope to people who feel they have no chance.

WeakAndWeary · 18/03/2020 09:51

You know people with nice houses and lots of money get the exact same virus as those without right? You do know that?

If you want to have a whine about the haves and have nots then do so but don't dress it up in yet another coronavirus thread.

TellMeWhoTheVilliansAre · 18/03/2020 09:52

He's richer than you. Regardless of whether or not he had Coronavirus.
He will always have nicer things than you. Sometimes he will be photographed enjoying those nice things.

Would you prefer if he was photographed having recovered/recovering in a council flat somewhere?!

Mlou32 · 18/03/2020 09:52

I think YABU. Yes he may have a better standard of living that many of us do, he is still allowed to have 'bla' days like all of us though.

Does that mean that when we complain about being bored during isolation/worrying about how we are going to pay our bills etc through being off work that we are being insensitive? Since there are people in the world so much more worse off than us and who would interpret our complaints as frivolous ie those people in the absolute poorest African nations, with little to no healthcare systems who quite frankly I am terrified for if coronavirus sweeps through their communities? Would they see our complaints as frivolous and insensitive even though they are legitimate thoughts of ours?

motherheroic · 18/03/2020 09:57

He is in his sixties with pre existing health problems. YABU and annoying.

OhCaptain · 18/03/2020 09:57

Don't see him fighting over a ventilator. It will be nothing like others reality.

And where did he say it would be?

nordstrom · 18/03/2020 09:59

YABU. Leave Tom alone! HTH

Quartz2208 · 18/03/2020 10:01

The point isnt that he wouldnt need to fight over a ventilator because he wouldnt. Its that as a 63 year old diabetic he never needed one - that is the good thing for this and what he is trying to say.

Idris Elba has asthma his course is equally important in trying to ease the worry of people with that underlying conditions

That is not to say that it wont affect some asthmatics/diabetics but that they can get through it without too many issues

Lobelia123 · 18/03/2020 10:02

You sound very jealous and resentful.

The sad fact is, that if you are online and know about Tom Hanks and his film career, you are probably better off than millions of people in poverty stricken developing countries. If you posted your experiences with being sick, do you think they would be entitled to sneer about what do you know, lazing around in your lovely waterproof three bedroom house with electricity and water ?

EthelMayFergus · 18/03/2020 10:03

I like Tom Hanks, so I'm glad he and Rita are recovering. I also think it was good of them to go public with it.

ZebrasAreHorsesInPyjamas · 18/03/2020 10:06

Would it have been okay if it had been Doris down the road in her council flat saying the same thing? I am guessing it probably would and we'd have all been chuffed for a bit of good news about a 60-something diabetic.

Yes, he has a nice house and good healthcare. Good for him, by paying for private, he has taken a bit of the burden off the other bedspaces for the less fortunate. He's worked hard for it and by all accounts is a nice fella so YABU.

Ohtherewearethen · 18/03/2020 10:06

What is it you're annoyed about exactly? That he's recovered? That he's sharing his experience? That he is rich? That he has a bigger house than you? I really don't understand where you're coming from here. You've obviously had wasps for breakfast.

PerkingFaintly · 18/03/2020 10:06

There have been multiple posters here worrying that "we haven't heard from anyone who's survived covid 19".Hmm

This is completely untrue. I've seen several interviews with people who've now recovered, eg from a cruise ship.

A high-profile survivor like Tom Hanks speaking publicly is exactly what those worriers need.
