To think Tom Hanks is insensitive

Talking about having "blah" days after his quick recovery. I'm pleased he and his wife are on the mend but not all of us will have the luxury of lazing around in £ million plus beach front multi room houses. The reality for most who get the virus will be nothing like.

OP posts:
DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 18/03/2020 10:07

Where does it end? I live in a council house and am a minimum wage worker, but if I complain about a 'blah' day then I could be insensitive to people who have no home or job Confused

So glad Tom and his wife are recovering.

BadLad · 18/03/2020 10:08

You've obviously had wasps for breakfast

Love this phrase. Never heard it before.

maddiemookins16mum · 18/03/2020 10:08

YABU.....I feel heartened when anyone, be that Forest Gump or anyone else, gets better.

Dyrne · 18/03/2020 10:10

Your post is actually dangerous as it implies that people shouldn’t have poor mental health or “blah days” if they are fortunate.

Where does it end? Tom Hanks isn’t allowed to admit feeling rubbish because he’s rich. I’m not allowed to feel rubbish because I own my house rather than rent. Deidre down the road isn’t allowed to feel rubbish because at least she can afford to put food on the table. Sean isn’t allowed to feel rubbish because he’s fortunate enough to have access to a good bank.

Where does the line go for being officially allowed to feel rubbish occasionally? I imagine you’ve drawn the line just about at your level.

ShesGotBetteDavisEyes · 18/03/2020 10:10

I’m glad he’s on the mend - it’s heartening. Wouldn’t occur to me to make it about money or what he has.

gingersausage · 18/03/2020 10:11

Did you want him to die just to prove it could happen to rich people too?

I mean I’m no Tom Hanks fan girl, and the sycophancy on this thread is puke making, but the reality for most who get the virus will be exactly like (sic). A few days feeling crappy and then back to normal. For the vast majority of healthy people, it’s not that big a deal.

LaMarschallin · 18/03/2020 10:15

Managed to inadvertently cover the voting but, imo, YABU.

(I'd be grateful if anyone would tell me what the vote is - I'm assuming from a quick read-through of the thread it verges towards YABU.)

There are far better examples of rich, privileged people moaning about their plight which often is due to their wealth, privilege etc.

Afaics, TH is just trying to say that this thing happens to everyone and is sharing his experience.

Mrsjayy · 18/03/2020 10:18

Nobody is being a sycophant I hope your nausea is ok though and you will be back to your "cool" self soon gingersausage

Reallynowdear · 18/03/2020 10:18

I'm just happy that they seem ok, that's a great thing to see from anyone who has been confirmed with the virus.

What has the size of his house go to do with his recovery?

Divebar · 18/03/2020 10:19

At this moment the results are that 84% think the OP is being unreasonable. ( of all the celebrities to choose I would say Tom Hanks was not the one to go after). Let’s hope as many people as possible come through it the same way.

Lynda07 · 18/03/2020 10:19

Tom Hanks is one of the good guys. People can't win with what they say at the moment. I'm very sorry for the op if she is suffering badly and hope it will be over for her soon.

caperberries · 18/03/2020 10:19

Jealousy's a curse

Alsohuman · 18/03/2020 10:19

Why do people think money ameliorates everything? If there’s one thing this crisis has shown us it’s that money is no protection against some things. Corona virus is certainly no respecter of wealth. I hate this kind of envious, sneering stuff, it’s so nasty.

caperberries · 18/03/2020 10:19

or envy even :)

Astrabees · 18/03/2020 10:21

I work in care. It doesn't matter if you are rich or not, being ill or being old sucks, and having money in the bank doesn't make that much difference. Being unwell in your beach front mansion or your suburban semi is just the same. We should be doing something to support the homeless and those in really inadequate accommodation, not slating Tom Hanks.

1forsorrow · 18/03/2020 10:23

Do you want him ramping up the hysteria? We have to be careful but people in his age group (like me) are getting fed up with the message of, "so many people died. all over 60*. It might annoy you but I am encouraged to read of someone in my age group who has come through this. So thanks to Tom for a morale boost and I'm glad he and his wife are doing OK.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 18/03/2020 10:29

Nope, couldn't disagree more. Hanks is in two high risk categories (over 60 and diabetic), and others in those categories will be very worried about what will happen to them if they catch the virus. Hearing that someone with the same risk factors has caught it and not become seriously, critically ill to the point of needing massive medical intervention could be very reassuring for them. The point isn't that Hanks' wealth provided him with access to massive medical intervention, the point is that he hasn't needed it despite being in more than one high risk category, which hopefully means that there are others over 60 with complicating factors who won't either.

If that's true that's good news for everyone, so what is there to be angry about?

thecatsthecats · 18/03/2020 10:30

The panic and upset has ramped up massively amongst people I know. Most people are in a state of disbelief or denial. I sent my staff home to work remotely yesterday and I have no idea when I'll see them again. As a operations director, I'm rewriting and reconfiguring our Ops pretty much from the ground up to handle this.

I'm pleased that someone who's had it is recovering, even if they have a blah day. I can't wait for the new normal to sink in, because right now, my body and mind are on high alert, with practical matters and random worries just flare up.

Ginandplatonic · 18/03/2020 10:32

He’s not in his own house though is he - he’s stuck here in Australia away from his family and friends at a very worrying time. Yes, no doubt he’s not slumming it, but it can’t be easy, no matter how much money he has.

SageRosemary · 18/03/2020 10:36

On a lighter note ....

Tom Hanks survived 4 years on an island as a castaway 🏝
He spent a year in an airport without being able to leave 🛫
Caught AIDS in Philadelphia 💉
He was in World War II and rescued Private Ryan;
He went to Vietnam and rescued Lieutenant Dan 🔫
Was on a boat kidnapped by Somali pirates 🚢
survived Apollo 13 trying to reach the Moon 🚀
Landed a Boeing on the Hudson River✈

If that son of a bitch dies of coronavirus 👑🦠, we are ALL fucked!!!

I'm so glad he is recovering. I hope all you Mumsnetters and your families stay safe and well - physically and mentally at this difficult time

Pukkatea · 18/03/2020 10:36

Seems a bit harsh to be bitter about a nice man finding a positive outlook after his recovery from an illness that could have been very serious for him. People seem to want to wish ill on anyone who dares to have money.

RuffleCrow · 18/03/2020 10:38

Good for him getting better. He was at high risk. Why shouldn't he talk about his experiences? Yes, he's wealthy but as far as i know he's earned it all himself through being good at what he does. Tom Hanks being well doesn't make anyone else ill. Biscuit

Langbannedforsafeguardingkids · 18/03/2020 10:39

I think it's great he's recovering so well, I like his work. However, he will have had the very very best health care in the world. No doubt. I wonder if he had antivirals - he may well have done - most of us won't. The thing is, the problem with the strategy in this country is that we're on course for people of his age getting NO healthcare at all if they catch COVID-19 let alone top notch healthcare.

So while I'm glad he's ok I don't think it really is that reassuring for the rest of us and the risk of him saying how he's recovered so easily is that it does cause complacency. The statistics show that the death rate is 4-5X lower if good medical care is available. The problem is not just the disease but the capacity of the NHS to deal with it (the NHS doesn't have the capacity to deal with it).

Smorgasbored0000 · 18/03/2020 10:40

You don’t attack Tom Hanks. The man is a treasure.

Starstruck2020 · 18/03/2020 10:40

The only thing I have to say is he needs to
learn moderation with vegemite application on toast!
