To think Tom Hanks is insensitive

Talking about having "blah" days after his quick recovery. I'm pleased he and his wife are on the mend but not all of us will have the luxury of lazing around in £ million plus beach front multi room houses. The reality for most who get the virus will be nothing like.

YABtotallyU, Tom Hanks is a lovely man, I am really glad he is recovering. It is good to hear about positive outcomes.

adaline · 18/03/2020 10:41

Actually I think it's great that he's portraying a slightly more positive side to things. He was at high risk and he's survived, which is a pretty big achievement. Lots of people are scared and he's showing that actually it's not all doom and gloom.

It's also good to have someone like him following all the guidelines and isolating as per requirements. Being stuck inside is hard on your mental health. Choosing to be home is very different to being stuck indoors when you wish you could go out.

x2boys · 18/03/2020 10:41

But most of us will be ok ,that doesn't mean I'm not worried my parents are in their 70,s and have underlying health conditions particularly my mum ,but most people will recover quite quickly

Hippopotas · 18/03/2020 10:42

Why are you offended by this?

Coffeeandnutrients · 18/03/2020 10:42

What would you have preferred?

MintySpud · 18/03/2020 10:43

YANBU. He should only be posting in sackcloth and ashes, like the lepers in Ben Hur, and screaming horribly in his death throes like the old woman at the start of Masque of the Red Death (the Vincent Price version, obviously).

LightAsTheBreeze · 18/03/2020 10:44

Very good news surely, I'm a year younger than him so certainly good news for me.

paintedsmile77 · 18/03/2020 10:46

It seems Ibu. Thanks for the replies. I've always thought him smug though.

I find it helpful when people share their experiences

lentenwonder · 18/03/2020 10:48

It’s not his fault governments around the world don’t have a health service that can cope with a pandemic.

countrygirl99 · 18/03/2020 10:49

My husband is a diabetic in his 60s and we find Tom Hanks experience reassuring.

gingersausage · 18/03/2020 10:49

Not me @Mrsjayy, I’m unbelievably uncool. Just can’t stand celeb arse kissing and the “national treasure” shit. He’s just a bloke, not a bloody god.

NightCzar · 18/03/2020 10:57

He's in Australia. No one is fighting over ventilators...yet.

onceandneveragain · 18/03/2020 10:58

I can sort of see what OP means...not specifically in relation to TH because I feel his "blah" comment is innocuous and fair enough - but do feel annoyed about all the celebrities sanctimoniously telling others off for not social distancing whilst ignoring the fact that social distancing or social isolation in a very large, private, house, with garden, family nearby, no concerns about losing your job and home, a fully stocked kitchen and "people" to obtain things for you, money and assistance to look after any elderly parents you might have is very different to trying to do it, for example, in a small flat with no outside access, small children to feed and entertain, drunk or inconsiderate neighbours, limited food availability, and a partner who works for the emergency services and who can't social distance from that job!

Lindy2 · 18/03/2020 10:59

I find the updates of people getting better or showing very mild symptoms extremely reassuring- regardless of their wealth.

Tom Hanks 60+ with diabetes- recovering well without, it seems, a huge amount of medical intervention.

Nadine Dorries - felt quite poorly but recovered well without needing medical intervention. Her 84 year old mum, all ok and hardly I'll at all.

Idris Elba - no symptoms and ok despite having asthma.

The Arsenal coach (can't remember his name) - very mild symptoms and doing well.

I would really like to hear many many more of these positive recovery stories, particularly from ordinary people. I think that would be so reassuring.

It does seem to be that a lot of the celebs have only found out they have Covid 19 as they are being tested as a precaution. I assume these are private tests they are having. There could be so many more people without the classic signs who aren't being tested and who won't have a clue they have had it. They're not even testing people with symptoms. How are we ever going to know the true position?

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 18/03/2020 11:00

I always think he seems nice

Seems just the sort of person who is likely to now donate money to help those who have it and are less fortunate than himself.

PeninsulaPanic · 18/03/2020 11:03

Wow get in the queue to crawl up the multi-millionaire Tom Hanks' arse everyone Hmm

Someone described him as a person "we all know". I think you meant "know of". In my case, purely by involuntary exposure.

I have real people to care about. So what if a huge ego with more money than sense in a sickly unequal world got the flu and got better? Thousands upon thousands of far less attention-seeking people with nothing like his wealth and social privilege haven't and won't. Personally, I'd rather column inches were devoted to raising money from "global treasures" like Hanks for their poor families instead. It'll never happen, of course. And his "fan(nie)s" wouldn't question that status quo for a moment.

Cheers Hanx, I appreciate your updates. Excuse me while I puke Envy (Not envy, but no doubt the fans will tell me that's the only reason I could find their sycophantic responses questionable Confused)

nolongersurprised · 18/03/2020 11:04

Him, as a multi millionaire, his stay in the private hospital won't compare in anyway to the stay the rest of us will have, that's even if we get the luxury of seeing a health professional

This is bullshit. I live in Australia. He went to the local public hospital and was on the same isolation ward as other patients with Covid-19. Locally the private hospitals aren’t accepting Covid-19 patients as they’re being kept “clean” for overflow public patients, if necessary.

sonjadog · 18/03/2020 11:05

I think it is important that these stories come out. The media always will focus on the worst scenarios. It is important to remember that most people do only experience mild symptoms.

LoveIsLovely · 18/03/2020 11:10

People who live in a one bedroom flat could say the same about people living in a semi.

People living in a less developed country could say the same about the UK.

People who don't have family and friends around to help them could say the same about those with a large social circle.

There's always someone worse off and better off than you. Just because Tom Hanks is loaded doesn't mean he doesn't have bad days. You have bad days which might seem ludicrous to someone living in a shack in rural Thailand or whatever.

Imstillskanking · 18/03/2020 11:11

Sounds like you dislike the fact that he's rich.

PerkingFaintly · 18/03/2020 11:13

I have real people to care about.

So have I. Some of whom live in two-room houses in a less developed country with a very poor health system, and have respiratory diseases.

I am GLAD to hear good news from someone who's recovered well.

LaMarschallin · 18/03/2020 11:16

PeninsulaPanic

Wow get in the queue to crawl up the multi-millionaire Tom Hanks' arse everyone

I don't think that's what people are doing.

I'm sure everyone has " real " people to care about.
Especially you, as you sound so warm and nice.

AudacityOfHope · 18/03/2020 11:16

I thought it was clear that he meant days where he still felt tired and a bit crap.

What is offensive about that?Confused

ilovemyrednosedaymug · 18/03/2020 11:16

YABU. It doesn't matter what his surroundings are, he was still unwell and would have been just as unwell in a council house .

It is great to hear from real people , especially famous ones, who have made a recovery. The more positive stories that can be spread around, the better.
