To go to the gym as normal?

I know they are seen as awash with germs but mine is pretty clean. I always wipe down the equipment well before and after using, especially where my hands are going to go, and wash hands as soon as I’ve finished.

I really don’t want to stop as I’m doing well losing weight and getting fitter, and exercise is good for the immune system anyway! I would need to stop going for months to avoid the virus.

AIBU? Slightly concerned about taking the virus home to family.

Thanks @PilatesPeach, that's what I thought but wanted to double check.

AvonBarksdale99 · 16/03/2020 18:35

If it’s that unsafe to go to the gym and will definitely spread it and cause the disease to infect more, why don’t the government just close them, as has happened in other countries?

BMW6 · 16/03/2020 18:39

OP you should stop going to the gym from now as the CMO and team have requested.

Tellmetruth4 · 16/03/2020 18:40

In northern Italy you are not even allowed to run outside. A friends who’s dad is there said a man was fined €500 for jogging outside. You need permission slips to leave home. Better start practising running around my matchbox garden and up and down the stairs.

BretonKitten · 16/03/2020 18:43

Irresponsible to the extreme to keep going.

Because people won't accept that they need to change their behaviour now before this situation escalates!

For anyone still trying to say that gyms aren't a breeding ground please read the above.

I’m going, went this morning to a pretty big 1 in London. WFH at the moment has enabled me to fit going more often in. Been loving it, still some nice other gym goers but not rammed. They have these anti bac wipes for equipment and gel by reception for everyone. I’ve not gone on any equipment directly behind or next too anyone. Not been in this good shape since summer!
I think pretty soon - maybe 2 weeks gyms will close. So I’m going to cane it in there till it does.

Parky04 · 16/03/2020 18:49

If the gym is still open tomorrow then I will attend. The government has not banned it, only suggested the vulnerable should not go and I don't fall within that category.

FilthyforFirth · 16/03/2020 18:51

This thread is a great example of why this virus is going to spread so quickly.

Willing to bet a lot of the people who insist on ignoring govt advice are also the idiots who have erroneously panic bought loo roll and pasta...

Moomin8 · 16/03/2020 18:53

No, that is not true. The government has told vulnerable people to self isolate and for those not at high risk to change your behaviour and stop going to places you don't need to!

Just stop being so selfish and do your bit to stop this spreading.

Moomin8 · 16/03/2020 18:53

Quite @FilthyforFirth

otterturk · 16/03/2020 18:55

I'm still going until it shuts.

MaidenMotherCrone · 16/03/2020 18:58

Dear God what is wrong with people. How can so many people not understand simple instructions. Selfish twats!

Thirza38 · 16/03/2020 18:59

Omg some people on here are selfish horrors

Westfacing · 16/03/2020 19:01

You obviously didn't pay attention.

Everyone was advised to stop non-essential contact with others

GG20 · 16/03/2020 19:01

I didn't go to my usual class this morning - I was surprised it wasn't cancelled, but the gym has now said it's shutting from tomorrow until further notice.

Sickandscared · 16/03/2020 19:04

I am not from the UK. I have seen this thread doing the rounds on various WhatsApp groups.

You people need to wake up. Watch non- UK news. The apathy and self indulgence is staggering. Watch the pleas from Italy to not make their mistakes. Watch them singing from their apartments that they can't leave. Read the public statements from the Italian ICU staff.

When your loved ones are in hospital alone dying without ventilators because the staff had to make tough decisions on who made the last one will you really think that spin class was so worth it? And even it it's not your loved one, it's somebody's.

Stay at home. Wfh. Have your groceries delivered. If you have to go to the shops keep two metres apart from the other consumers. It is a crisis. You need to make sacrifices. All the UK seem to be interested in is sacrificing their old and vulnerable with some sort of "well I will survive it" attitude.

otterturk · 16/03/2020 19:04

I have no symptoms. Exercise is a huge part of my life. I really don't care if strangers call me selfish.

Applejaxx · 16/03/2020 19:05

I won't be going to classes from now on. I might consider going at quiet times. Its a 24 hour gym so I could in theory go late at night if I wanted to.

AllesAusLiebe · 16/03/2020 19:07

@Sickandscared I 100% agree with you. I simply don't understand the attitudes in this country at the moment.

Mymymycorona · 16/03/2020 19:07

@eurochick not all pools are chlorine cleaned. Some use a system called Ozone which I have never been convinced is cleaner.

Nicolastuffedone · 16/03/2020 19:07

Can’t believe what I’m reading. After all the warnings, people are still wanting to ‘cane it’ because the rules don’t seem to apply to them. So, so stupid.

Moomin8 · 16/03/2020 19:08

You don't have to have symptoms to spread it but you're increasing your own chances of getting it and then passing it on to vulnerable people in your family
