To go to the gym as normal?

I know they are seen as awash with germs but mine is pretty clean. I always wipe down the equipment well before and after using, especially where my hands are going to go, and wash hands as soon as I’ve finished.

I really don’t want to stop as I’m doing well losing weight and getting fitter, and exercise is good for the immune system anyway! I would need to stop going for months to avoid the virus.

AIBU? Slightly concerned about taking the virus home to family.

ladybee28 Having already made a decision to cancel the holiday i was due to go on yesterday to what was effectively a 3rd world country with no healthcare facilities (at a loss of £3700) when TUI is still continuing to send flights there, I consider that going to the gym when i have no contact with older people or children is fairly low risk by comparison. Our gym (and it's members) are all taking extra precautions with cleaning and sanitising. Going to the supermarket is a bigger risk and most people still seem to be doing that!

PinkiOcelot · 16/03/2020 13:16

I’m supposed to be going to a class tonight. Bit concerned now though.

WatchingFromTheWings · 16/03/2020 13:18

I'm still going though my gym was very very quiet this morning. I always wipe down with anti bac spray and I use hand sanitizer in between ever workout/routine.

amiapropermum · 16/03/2020 13:19

Why are the UK scientists right and the scientists in all other countries are wrong? Herd immunity is a good thing but that's going to cost lives. Hopefully nobody will end up regretting their gym-going priorities. I'm sure many of us have underlying health conditions or elderly parents. But exercise is clearly the priority here!

MozzchopsThirty · 16/03/2020 13:22

I went yesterday but did a virtual class on my own

I won't be going back now until this is over
I'll run outside or do HIIT at home

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 16/03/2020 13:24

Did you miss what I said about herd immunity? Scientists in the UK are advising people to continue going about their daily lives unless they are showing symptoms or in an at risk group. They are advising this for a reason, because they now believe that it is no longer a feasible option to hope to stop spread of the virus; they instead need the virus to spread slowly over a longer period of time so that hospitals are not flooded with patients. Complete lockdown of all movement is not thought to be helpful in the situation we are now in.

This x 100%.

YouKnowWhoo · 16/03/2020 13:25

You’ll all be slim and fat free when you are laid up six feet under.

Stay home. Isolate. Stop thinking for yourselves only. A deadly virus is coming.

Change your news channel to a European one. Shit for real a few weeks ago.

Open your eyes.

Tellmetruth4 · 16/03/2020 13:32

So are the people who are saying not to go to the gym or you will die already self isolating then because surely being anywhere where there are other people is a risk? People are still getting buses, tubes, trains, going to school, work, pub, supermarket.

Are you guys literally locked down with your family in the U.K.?

amiapropermum · 16/03/2020 13:34

I'm in another country but yes, self isolating. I'm asthmatic and have elderly parents.

Maxhiggins · 16/03/2020 13:36

Go for a walk or run or get a bike or skipping rope. Sprint laps of your garden or up and down stairs, use horded tins as weights, the are loads of options

Lweji · 16/03/2020 13:41

The difference between the UK and other countries is that the UK doesn't seem to have factored in the number of people that will end up in hospital there is already a considerable number of dead for the confirmed cases. But isolation of the vulnerable is still on hold. And most instances of isolation, to slow down spread, seem to be driven by individual or corporate initiatives.

I don't think an almost empty gym will be a great risk. I think it's ok if they limit numbers and clean thoroughly.

But if you contact with vulnerable people, or are at a greater risk of infection (through work, for example), then I think you should avoid going to protect others, most and foremost.

And before anyone screams that I'm not an expert, I'm a molecular biologist who teaches molecular epidemiology, and is well used to working in Cat 3 labs (infectious agents). Not at the forefront, not working with the WHO, though. But with this virus, even the experts aren't experts.

Tellmetruth4 · 16/03/2020 13:44

In the UK nobody has been told to self isolate unless they’re vulnerable or already showing symptoms and as much as I can’t stand our government, I don’t believe they’re trying to kill us all.

Everyone in the gym is spraying and there are bottles of anti-bac everywhere. I haven’t see anyone so much as sniff let alone cough. Meanwhile DH texted me to say 2 people are off work with ‘flu-like’ symptoms, and their office is still open. I reckon he has a greater chance of picking it up there than I have at the gym.

I have elderly parents and am not taking the situation likely. Am going out later to do shopping for elderly parents, neighbours and a disabled man on my street so I do care. However, there is so much stuff being spread over the internet that I’ve decided my best course of action is to just follow government advice.

Blah1881 · 16/03/2020 13:46

Yep, go to the gym! Exercise boosts the immune system and keeps your spirits up. I went to the gym this morning and everyone was wiping down their machines, sharing anti bac wipes etc. Keep calm and carry on! Xx

ladybee28 · 16/03/2020 13:52

@PersephoneandHades

The scientists... as in, WHO’s director general, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus?

‘You can’t fight a virus if you don’t know where it is. ‘Find, isolate, test and treat every case to break the chains of Covid transmission. Every case we find and treat limits the expansion of the disease. ‘Do not just let this fire burn. ‘Any country that looks at the experience of other countries with large epidemics and thinks “that won’t happen to us” is making a deadly mistake.’

I didn't miss anything you said – I'm saying that people thinking like you are missing what the rest of the world is saying.

And not going to the gym is hardly paranoia and panic – I assure you it can be done perfectly calmly.

My 'resentment of the UK' isn't resentment - it's exasperation. It's several years' worth of disbelieving facepalms.

Tellmetruth4 · 16/03/2020 13:55

Part of the issue is that lots of people are spreading stuff on the internet and sharing WhatsApps from people claiming to be nurses and doctors giving all kinds of conflicting advice. I’ve heard everything from the virus being created by the government in order to start Marshall law and put us all under control via implanting a device when giving us the vaccine to someone claiming their aunt is a nurse on a ward claiming the virus is not as bad as the flu.

The only thing I can do is constantly wash hands, use the antibacterial gel, don’t go to crowded areas ( I don’t go on public transport) and keep my distance, or shake hands. I’m even leaving shopping on my parents doorstep. However, I’m not locking me and my family up until I’m told I need to by the government, not someone on the internet.

As it happens, now the weather’s improving I’ll probably run outside (although I’m sure I’ll be told this will also lead to my death somehow) but that’s not due to Coronavirus. I just hate running outside in the rain and wind.

MrsPerfect12 · 16/03/2020 13:56

I went this morning, I will continue to go until I can't. We've just to get on with life as best we can.

AvonBarksdale99 · 16/03/2020 14:02

I’m not sure how I will catch it in the gym given I wash my hands before going in, hand sanitise during, don’t touch my face and then hand sanitize after I leave, and wash my hands as soon as I get home. No-one coughs or spits in my mouth.

Exercise boosts the immune system. And I’m only mixing with people who have also chosen to go to the gym so I’m not infecting the elderly or at risk.

ihatethecold · 16/03/2020 14:13

Each to their own but how is using anti bacterial wipes on the gym equipment going to kill a virus?

Meme05 · 16/03/2020 14:14

All those saying they’re spraying or wiping down machines with anti-bac , it’s a virus.

I’m going but using the outdoor running track instead of the weights room or treadmills etc. Figure it’s still risky to go but less so as usually no one else is using the track. Finally Trying to do the C25K.
Appreciate though that not all gyms have outdoor spaces.

speakout · 16/03/2020 14:14

I went to yoga this morning.

I will continue, but only to classes that don't use any equipment. I have my own mat.
Gym equipment is usaully covered in sweat and grubbiness.

GymMummyBunny · 16/03/2020 14:21

Well I’ve been. Sweated hard. Feel great. It was not busy for a Monday late morning/lunchtime. Not many of the old timers in there which is good that they are taking government advice.

Ha ha Reenon. I always get lots of stares too (especially from lazy twats who’ve just got off the machine I’m about to go on without wiping down) as I wipe everything including the adjuster knobs etc, weight stack knobs, etc. Loads of people doing the same today, even people who don’t normally wipe at all Wink.

I will keep calm and carry on unlike the idiots who have once again stripped the whole town bare of bog roll! I suppose worse comes to worse I can nick some from the gym Shock.

Tellmetruth4 · 16/03/2020 14:37

Anti-bacterial gel/spray with an alcohol content of 60%+ kills viruses.

Beansandcoffee · 16/03/2020 14:42

As my work is still open and I’m in an office of 10 people then I will still go to the gym etc until I’m told I can’t. This could go on for months or it could (more probable) explode next week.

Moomin8 · 16/03/2020 14:44

I think YABU because imo we should all be trying to avoid any unnecessary contact with other people.

If we don't, then we are going to see a massive spike in cases and deaths and more people will die because they can't get treatment. Hysteria about this annoys me. But equally I'm annoyed by people who don't believe in collective responsibility here.

My children and I are all low risk in theory but I will be so upset if we end up like Italy.

It's very very sad to hear the reality of what is going on in Italy. Some people have relatives who have died at home and the authorities are taking days to come to collect them Sad

Very true that people in the UK do think we're different and special.
