To go to the gym as normal?

I know they are seen as awash with germs but mine is pretty clean. I always wipe down the equipment well before and after using, especially where my hands are going to go, and wash hands as soon as I’ve finished.

I really don’t want to stop as I’m doing well losing weight and getting fitter, and exercise is good for the immune system anyway! I would need to stop going for months to avoid the virus.

AIBU? Slightly concerned about taking the virus home to family.

I'm still going. I go early morning.

It's been very quiet for the last few days.

bakedbeanzontoast · 16/03/2020 14:45

I'm not stopping my visits unless they are shit down on government advice.

bakedbeanzontoast · 16/03/2020 14:47

Shut 😃

AllesAusLiebe · 16/03/2020 14:47

I'm taking up running again and won't set foot in the gym until this is over.

I'm restricting contact with other people, working from home and the only thing I'm obligated to do is go to the supermarket later today which I'm going to accomplish as quickly as possible.

I second the poster who recommended reading non-UK articles. I think everyone would start to take this a little more seriously if they did.

It's worrying to here this repeated mantra of, "I'm not doing anything unless the government tells me to". Well, this government's approach is raising eyebrows across the world, and not without reason.

Moomin8 · 16/03/2020 14:49

To those saying you're going to wait for the government.

The government has been unequivocal in its approach here and their view that vulnerable and or older people are dispensable. So it's being left to us as individuals to decide if we are going to support that or try not to compound it.

TheWordmeister · 16/03/2020 14:50

All those saying they’re spraying or wiping down machines with anti-bac, it’s a virus.

Most anti-microbial sanitisers work against both bacteria and viruses.

justmyview · 16/03/2020 14:55

I'm going tonight, but probably for the last time.

HopelessLayout · 16/03/2020 15:47

Pool is the safest place as the chlorine will kill everything. So I've read.

YouKnowWhoo · 16/03/2020 16:28

Re: the pool being safe.

Just think of all the surfaces you touch. The handles. The doors. The lockers. Whatever. It’s a place with lots of people, so they possibility to speed the virus is heightened. You only need to have it touch you once.

People please, stop this utter bullshit of having to exercise in the face of an epidemic.

Official UK advice is now to avoid pubs, clubs and social spaces

AvonBarksdale99 · 16/03/2020 17:40

And yet they’re not closed...

Moomin8 · 16/03/2020 17:44

They're not closed because at the moment the U.K. won't accept severe measures. And that is because most people haven't been personally affected by this yet.

But as more and more are they will change their position and hopefully stop putting other people at risk by doing non essential leisure activities.

I wonder how many people on this thread wanting to still go to the gym would be the first to be up in arms about parents who don't vaccinate their children.

GymMummyBunny · 16/03/2020 17:47

I don’t regard going to gym as ‘socialising’ though. It’s a medical need for me. I want to get through my workout and leave not stand around and natter. It’s pretty big as well so there’s probably more chance of someone coughing on me in an aisle of Tesco.

Really will be annoyed if my pretty expensive gym closes.

amiapropermum · 16/03/2020 17:59

I don't think the virus will listen to what you regard as socialising and stay away from you. Not being flippant - I get how important exercise is to you.

amiapropermum · 16/03/2020 18:07

Lots of gyms and instructors are offering free workout, pilates and yoga videos online at the moment

missyB1 · 16/03/2020 18:12

Ok I guess I need to stop swimming then. I will do my Pilates dvd at home instead.

Tellmetruth4 · 16/03/2020 18:14

Just seen the press conference with the updated advice....today was probably my last day at the gym. Will run outside. Sad

Wallywobbles · 16/03/2020 18:16

A cluster near us started in a gym. Every single person from a class has it.

PilatesPeach · 16/03/2020 18:17

I teach classes at various clubs and am waiting to hear what is happening.
Antibacterial wipes do not kill viruses. All the bottles of spray we are told to use are all being handled by loads of people so equipment may be clean but our hands won't be. In equipment focused classes like pump no way is it possible to ensure all surfaces are clean. Mats - bring your own - they will be full of germs and wet from being sprayed. I am self employed so if there are no classes I won't earn money but I do view them as non-essential gatherings - leisure clubs. If my classes run I will teach them but the classes I do as a participant - no won't be doing those.

mynameiscalypso · 16/03/2020 18:17

Glad I got a swim in yesterday. I presume running alone outside is okay at the moment? Presuming you have no symptoms obviously.

PilatesPeach · 16/03/2020 18:21

yes run outside or walk dog - the government said that even the over 70s can walk dog - going for a run is not a social gathering - well no if you run by yourself

Youneverknowwhatyourgonnaget · 16/03/2020 18:21

Here now with my whole family and am just wiping everything down and not touching my face. I’m hoping the healthier we are the better we can handle this.if I was in the at risk groups I wouldn’t be here

Racheyg · 16/03/2020 18:23

I'm still going and will continue to go until I show signs of a cough etc.

I did my best spin class yesterday a beat my FTP by 4 was well chuffed

amiapropermum · 16/03/2020 18:26

When you have signs of a cough you will already be transmitting the virus, to your colleagues, friends or family.

If everyone takes an 'I'm alright Jack' attitude then it gets a lot worse very quickly
