To go to the gym as normal?

I know they are seen as awash with germs but mine is pretty clean. I always wipe down the equipment well before and after using, especially where my hands are going to go, and wash hands as soon as I’ve finished.

I really don’t want to stop as I’m doing well losing weight and getting fitter, and exercise is good for the immune system anyway! I would need to stop going for months to avoid the virus.

AIBU? Slightly concerned about taking the virus home to family.

My gym is just as busy as always.

We are wiping down the spinning bikes and equipment and they are clearly cleaning more often.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 16/03/2020 11:44

I'm still going. Classes are a little quieter but we're all grown ups and know to wash hands and stay away if sick (for ANY reason, not just youknowhat).

I'm wfh now too, so won't leave the house or see another human otherwise!

I refuse to put my entire life on hold for this. It could be months or years.

eurochick · 16/03/2020 11:50

I went for a run outdoors. No way would I use a gym at the moment. I might swim (apparently chlorine kills the virus) but try to avoid the changing rooms - just towel off, stick a onesie or similar over my Cassie and shower at home.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 16/03/2020 11:50

I'm going. It's really important for my mental health (as well as physical). Obviously if I or my trainer show any symptoms we'll self isolate. I'm trying to socially distance myself whereever possible but my mental health is a priority.

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 16/03/2020 12:18

I went this morning. Wondered if it was going to be quieter but if anything it was busier than ever.

PersephoneandHades · 16/03/2020 12:24

@ladybee28 If everyone stays inside on lockdown herd immunity will never occur. People who are healthy, young and have no symptoms have every right to continue doing their daily activities and this could actually be more beneficial to society. At the end of the day I say leave it to the scientists and doctors, who have yet to say that we should all be on lockdown.

Sorry about your relative, but it is simply not realistic or practical to expect everyone to act like the plague is upon us because there is a new flu like virus that is dangerous for at-risk groups.

Womencanlift · 16/03/2020 12:24

Mine closed on Friday for the foreseeable future so it’s home workouts for me now

Vulpine · 16/03/2020 12:28

Lady bee- the size of my thighs have got nothing to do with why I keep fit - but strengthening my lungs and immune system are

@PersephoneandHades spoken exactly like every other country in Europe 10 days ago...

When is the UK going to learn it's not different and special?

And when will people twig that the 'rights' they're so proud of broadcasting at the slightest sign of social need also come with responsibilities?

There are so many ways of exercising – is it really such a first-world affront to consider working out at home?

Weddingbelle123 · 16/03/2020 12:49

Mine has been closed for the next 2 weeks. I’m so cross- it’s a council run facility as well.

Wow, so thoughtful of you to drop everything from your vital professional pandemic expert job in the World Health Organisation to come and lecture people here on MN.

Nicknacky · 16/03/2020 12:51

I’m still going, I was there this morning. I go to CrossFit so we all share equipment during the class but we are all now cleaning it down after use.

I don’t want to work out at home unless I have to.

Weregoingonanadventure · 16/03/2020 12:53

I had a treadmill and cross trainer deliver this morning, which have now been set up in my bedroom. Dont know what to do about weights; will need to sort that out. But I wont be going to the gym!

fishonabicycle · 16/03/2020 12:56

Hmm. I've been debating this. Still undecided.

Hingeandbracket · 16/03/2020 12:57

YANBU I have been today.

We need to bring back wrist sweatbands!

emilybrontescorsett · 16/03/2020 12:59

I haven’t been going and am debating whether to go or not.
In all honesty I feel most venerable at work, coming into contact with members of the public.

your vital professional pandemic expert job in the World Health Organisation

The WHO that has warned that the UK is approaching this irresponsibly, you mean?

Womenwotlunch · 16/03/2020 13:02

Not sure if I will go.
I wasn’t concerned before, but I am concerned now

HoldMeCloserTonyDanza · 16/03/2020 13:03

You’re wasting your time ladybee.

British people are special. Blitz spirit. It’s every other country that is wrong!

Parky04 · 16/03/2020 13:05

Just got back and in a better frame of mind after a good run on the treadmill. Will only stop if the government tell me to do so.

amiapropermum · 16/03/2020 13:06

Speaking from another European country, YABVVVU. The official advice in the UK is contradictory to what the WHO says. Now is not the time to believe Boris!

Blobby10 · 16/03/2020 13:07

I'm still going to mine - its a 24/7 one and I go at 5am - there are about 12 of us there at that time!- and have no intention of not going . I use the hand sanitizer stuff as soon as I get there, wear weight lifting gloves all the time and spray the machines down once Ive used them. My mental health will really suffer if I'm not able to go

missyB1 · 16/03/2020 13:12

I’ve been wondering about this. I swim I don’t use the gym equipment. I love swimming and go 3 times a week, it’s for my mental health as well as physical. However I’m also aware of my responsibilities to take care and not risk spreading anything.
No idea what to do 🤷‍♀️

PersephoneandHades · 16/03/2020 13:14

@ladybee28 I'm going to ignore your weird and obvious resentment of the UK since it doesn't help anyone.

Did you miss what I said about herd immunity? Scientists in the UK are advising people to continue going about their daily lives unless they are showing symptoms or in an at risk group. They are advising this for a reason, because they now believe that it is no longer a feasible option to hope to stop spread of the virus; they instead need the virus to spread slowly over a longer period of time so that hospitals are not flooded with patients. Complete lockdown of all movement is not thought to be helpful in the situation we are now in.

Paranoia and panic is also extremely dangerous in times such as this, so I don't think it is responsible to suggest to someone that if they go to the gym they will be morally responsible if someone else who goes to the gym gets coronavirus. As long as you are not showing symptoms and are following good hygiene practises you are doing your part to keep people safe when out and about.

Again, I'm gonna leave it to the scientists.
