To go to the gym as normal?

I know they are seen as awash with germs but mine is pretty clean. I always wipe down the equipment well before and after using, especially where my hands are going to go, and wash hands as soon as I’ve finished.

I really don’t want to stop as I’m doing well losing weight and getting fitter, and exercise is good for the immune system anyway! I would need to stop going for months to avoid the virus.

AIBU? Slightly concerned about taking the virus home to family.

Well our entire household is now on lockdown so I won’t be going to the gym for a while. Sigh.

Applejaxx · 16/03/2020 19:11

As an example there was a polio pandemic in the early 1950's. My grandmother ignored advice and went swimming (Polio is water borne) she caught polio, nearly died, was in hospital for well over a year and was left permenantly disabled.

Let that sink in for a moment...

otterturk · 16/03/2020 19:11

@Applejaxx Not at all. I don't talk to other people about it, I use it to control my recovery from anorexia

emilybrontescorsett · 16/03/2020 19:12

The problem is that this government will not ‘ban’ such things. If they do then that’s when insurance kicks in and they don’t want that because that effects the shareholders.
No they want the general public to make the decision.
Well I’m not buying that.
Johnson needs to stop dithering about and take the bloody fall out.
Lots of people can’t afford to not go to paid events, so unless the event is cancelled and therefore they get their money back, they will not stop going.
I know the gym is a bit different and I understand that.
It’s the same at work while ever I am expected to turn up, which I am, then why should I choose to loose money on events I gave laud for!?
Seriously it’s a bloody farce.

Watch out for Karma.......

After reading comments after mine I’ve reconsidered and will now stop going.

I’m going to devise a 20 min hit circuit in the garden instead! I’ll do with the weights we have with DH & kids too.

Womenwotlunch · 16/03/2020 19:15

I am not going now

That's great sundowners and sounds like really good fun!
On behalf of all the people your re-think may have helped to save - Thank You!

sundowners · 16/03/2020 19:20

Ha thanks BMW6 !

This looks good. I’ll just add in some little sprint laps & more using weights -

The government is waiting for the pendulum of public opinion to swing. In my home country it happen very quickly, from a “we’ll be fine, it’ll all be fine” to “shit this is real, everyone wfh, all schools/gyms/restaurants closed etc”

24 hrs

We are almost there.

In a few days (less than a week) the government will announce similar measures, and they will have the public backing these measures then (which makes them more efficient)

I will MISS my sporty life and fitness, and jumping around in the garden won’t be the same. But that’s by the by

BMW6 · 16/03/2020 19:20

and the same Thanks to you womenwotlunch

Abouttimemum · 16/03/2020 19:23

I’m pretty laid back but the gym is somewhere I’d avoid currently.
You can exercise anywhere, indoors, outdoors.
That said I’m not stopping in the house indefinitely. People need to have some common sense and just be sensible about this whole thing.
Small behaviour changes can make a big difference. It doesn’t have to be all or nothing.

ShinyRuby · 16/03/2020 19:25

won't be going to classes from now on. I might consider going at quiet times. Its a 24 hour gym so I could in theory go late at night if I wanted to.
Erm, I think viruses will still be on surfaces no matter how late you go, plus you could have it yourself & spread it.
Heed the advice & don't go, it's not worth it for yourself & others.

MozzchopsThirty · 16/03/2020 19:29

I've just got les mills online
Free 14 day trial
At least I can keep myself sane

lljkk · 16/03/2020 19:30

I'm going to the swim pool as often as possible until it closes.

Mooserp · 16/03/2020 19:32

I feel lost without exercise too - but just exercise at home instead. Or go for a walk or run. Find some stairs to go up and down. You don't need special equipment.

TooOldForSims · 16/03/2020 19:32

I'm normally pretty relaxed but I'm avoiding the gym until this is all sorted. We actually have the option to freeze our membership for free (normally there is a charge) so they clearly understand that people are not wanting to go.

Salene · 16/03/2020 19:33

It's been made clear to avoid all social contact unfortunately I take this to be gyms also. I would prioritise your health and that of others now over exercise as disappointing as it is.

Time for you tube workout videos I think

CallMeThePooPatrol · 16/03/2020 19:36

Unbelievable.

What part of AVOID UNNECESSARY SOCIAL CONTACT don’t people understand??

OhMy05 · 16/03/2020 19:41

I usually go as many days in the week I can, I won’t anymore and will take up running outdoors (as long as no symptoms of course) and probably early in the morning when there are less people.

MomOfTwoGirls2 · 16/03/2020 19:42

Wow UK taking such a gamble on this.

If your government have got it wrong, and good chance they have, your NHS will be totally overwhelmed in a week or two.

UK has the 9th most cases worldwide, up to 1500+ today, that is 1000 new cases in the past week.

Just a few days ago Spain and Germany were at the 1000 mark.

I can’t believe how many people in UK are blasé about this.

kateybeth79 · 16/03/2020 19:42

I have Bipolar so also use exercise to keep myself sane (not joking, I have experienced a pretty serious mental breakdown) but there is no way on earth I am going to put others in harm's way when I can find an alternative way of exercising at home. Some of the things I'm reading are beyond selfish. I really hope they don't lose a loved one from this virus. Well done to everyone planning to work out at home!

TabbyMumz · 16/03/2020 19:46

"Unbelievable.

To be fair, whilst kids are still going to school and most people have a requirement to go to work, it seems odd people shouldn't go the gym. Especially as the local leisure centres are still open.

steff13 · 16/03/2020 19:49

My state has just closed gyms, indoor water parks, movie theaters, bowling allies, and indoor entertainment centers.
