I'm worried about the lack of UK testing!! Eventually our death rate is going to look absolutely horrific in comparison to other nations if we don't actually begin testing properly again

Guess what? They don't test properly here, either. In fact, you have to have a cough, a fever PLUS at least one of a list of additional issues to get tested.

And yet this place has somehow managed the "achievement" of having the second highest per capita count behind Italy. Which is definitely an underestimate. I'm really pretty sure I have it at this point (as is my GP, for that matter). My boss looks like death and coughs a lot more than me (on video calls, we're not insane here). No idea what he has - but he's clearly not well and if my GP is reasonably certain I have it and him and I were working closely together until the week before last ... well, it doesn't precisely take a genius! Plus there are the other 20 people we used to regularly work closely with. And everyone's families. None of us got tested.

So, if despite this the per capita infection rate is through the roof ... we're kind of possibly quite fucked around here.

Myself, boss, colleagues and family will do just fine. But I'm using us as illustration for why I'm guesstimating the resl figures to be higher yet.

Just read this on the sun newspaper report online?

Twasbambam · 16/03/2020 14:22

Have they said how many tested?

Feelingsolost1 · 16/03/2020 14:23

No, no mention of that or death rate.

lannister · 16/03/2020 14:23

I doubt Boris is going to close schools, feels like he is more concerned about the economy than lives and is just waiting for the Easter holidays to be used as the quarantine time.

Oakmaiden · 16/03/2020 14:24

As of 9am on 16 March 2020, 44,105 people have been tested in the UK, of which 42,562 were confirmed negative and 1,543 were confirmed as positive.

Bizarre since they posted 6 minutes ago saying that releasing the figures would be delayed until later this afternoon. Unless it is the number of deaths slowing them down...

stoptherideiwanttogetoff · 16/03/2020 14:24

It's my understanding that if you actually get a bed in hospital and are tested your pretty unwell by this point I suspect the figure would be much higher if they did more tests..! No idea how many they have tested but it won't be nowhere near enough.. that's part of the plan!

allthesharks · 16/03/2020 14:25

If the number of new cases are now artificially low, which we expect them to be due to reducing testing, then that gives the government the "evidence" it needs to say that the measures are working and there's no need to close schools/lockdown anyone. It's all based on completely crap data though and ultimately, while we may never know the extent of the cases (unless they start testing more in the community again) we will know the extent of the deaths. Unless of course they mis-report those figures as well.

All of us, who are taking a more active interest in what's going on, know that the figures are meaningless. But the "it's only flu" brigade with their heads stuck in the sand will just see the headline figures which will back up their notion that it's not that bad and we're all over reacting.

In reality, our government is the only one under reacting and they don't appear to care at what cost (other than financial).

Helenj1977 · 16/03/2020 14:25

Gov.uk updated just after 2pm!!

MarshaBradyo · 16/03/2020 14:25

Is that advice that a whole family have to self isolate in effect yet?

That I’m asking this is why we need daily briefings.

SistemaAddict · 16/03/2020 14:27

What time is the daily briefing?

Ffsnosexallowed · 16/03/2020 14:28

Truth is old people are gong to be dying in their own homes with minimal support. In 4 weeks time old people won't be admitted to
Hospital. There is no treatment for this other than ventilation. We do not have enough ventilators /staff. It's terrifying.

anonacfr · 16/03/2020 14:29

One case at our school too.
Parent testing positive. Child isolated, school will be cleaned but stay open.

danni0509 · 16/03/2020 14:29

The false numbers we are getting in daily is like getting someone else to piss on your pregnancy test!

Useless bastards.

SistemaAddict · 16/03/2020 14:30

School have cancelled all sports and club meetings. But not school itself. No logic there.

defthand · 16/03/2020 14:31

It makes no sense that deaths went from 10 to 14 to 0.

These numbers appear to be fiction.

Justyou · 16/03/2020 14:32

Yes our school has messaged to say swimming & all clubs cancelled

waspfig · 16/03/2020 14:32

School nearby has a confirmed case (a reception child). All reception children sent home but the rest of the school stayed open?!

danni0509 · 16/03/2020 14:33

Didnt we have 1 death we already knew about this morning? That hasn't been updated. So maybe an update with total death toll is yet to come?

waspfig · 16/03/2020 14:34

Yes all swimming and sports clubs, parents assemblies etc 'postponed' at the school I work in. Children having separate playtimes to avoid overcrowding on the yard and no assemblies in the hall.

BeyondMymymymyCorona · 16/03/2020 14:34

Same here bercows

confusedandtired99 · 16/03/2020 14:34

Perhaps they are no longer going to give us a death toll? I wouldn’t put it passed them!

Twasbambam · 16/03/2020 14:35

Are they currently seeing how many of the deaths they can pass off as due to something else , like Germany?

Oakmaiden · 16/03/2020 14:35

So 30 new cases in wales today, 18 in Scotland, 7 in N Ireland and - what - 116 in England. Yeah, right.
