A lot of people dont have cards - how they going to buy food - banks not going to be able to quickly issue everyone.

Windy0urneckin · 15/03/2020 11:46

Why aren’t the press making a bigger deal about the reduction in testing? To my mind it’s so fundamental as the government could use the artificially low numbers to justify just about anything.

cjt110 · 15/03/2020 11:46

Worried I’m missing the point here... is the FCO saying the uae are stopping the issue of visas? Unless you’re a diplomat? And if you are a diplomat and get a visa you’d have to self isolate on arrival?

From the Guardian after BoJo's chat with Japan's PM:

"The prime minister stressed the importance the UK is placing on taking a science-led approach when deciding what measures to implement."

But UK science isn't getting real time data to inform the approach because such limited testing.......

Going off to bang my head against a brick wall because it will be so nice when I stop.

@RedLentilYellowLentil

Or will we just get arrested for coughing and looking a bit sweaty

Well at least Prince Andrew will be OK then.

BeyondMymymymyCorona · 15/03/2020 11:55

I'm wound up this morning... My in-laws have today been insisting that they're fine as there are no cases in their area. Thing is, there aren't going to be any now - their area has no A&E, and the only testing now is if you are admitted as an emergency. So even if seventy people from their area get hospitalised, they are going to show as being in the city where we live rather than the smaller town where they do!

Austria tightened restrictions on public life further on Sunday, banning public gatherings of more than five people, closing restaurants from Tuesday and calling on people to self-isolate as coronavirus cases in the country continued to climb.

“I call on all Austrians to isolate themselves,” Chancellor Sebastian Kurz said on Twitter. “We’re aware those are massive restrictions but they are necessary to defend the health of the Austrian people and starve out COVID-19.”

Kurz said people should leave their home only to get to work, get food or other necessities, or help other people. Police will start to enforce the ban today and close playgrounds, sport facilities and other venues

@ClientQueen bless your dad, sounds a busy man! x

What I think is not sinking in is that it will affect everyone who needs a hospital bed for any reason in the next 4 - 6 months. What will not be recorded or reported on will be the number of collateral deaths because there are no ICU beds for heart attacks, sepsis, etc.

All french ski resorts now closed, DD1 booked on a flight out of Geneva on Weds. Stupidly, they announced this last night, and Sat is changeover day so there are thousands of pissed off skiers. She and her fellow workers went out last night for one last hurrah, she said the atmosphere was totally weird. Now I need to find out if she will have to self-isolate when she gets home...

I think I have got it :(

Someone at work tested positive. I wasn’t in direct contact but touched door handles etc and I have also been in close contact with those who were in close contact with the confirmed case.

I didn’t sleep well last night, which I though was me worrying. I also kept feeling hot and cold, but I do sometimes at night.

This morning, I have taken my temp first thing and was fine, then I was feeling warm a couple of hours ago and took it again and it was 38 :( I sat with window open in a t shirt as I was feeling hot and my temp has now gone down.

I have taken to the bedroom whilst I monitor it to see if it goes back up. My face feels hot though so not good.

I also have asthma, so am quite worried.

Bessica1970 · 15/03/2020 12:11

The BCC are showing that over 70s will need to isolate ‘within weeks’.
Ffs, we will all need to be isolated within weeks, the vulnerable need to be isolated now!
So the grand plan of protecting our vulnerable is really‘we’re thinking of protecting the vulnerable someone in the future’ 😡

SistemaAddict · 15/03/2020 12:13

@RandomlyChosenName I hope you feel better soon Thanks

I think we all need to spare a thought for those in retail, and start actually being a bit bloody considerate of them.

  • only use card unless you have a genuine reason not to (so stop having cashiers have to touch your dirty hands and money, basically)
  • hand the cashier the correct change/as close to it as possible. For the love of god, stop sticking out your dirty hands and telling them to "take what they need out of it". Fucking gross.
  • try and wash your hands before going to the till if you can. Even just before you pop to the shops is better than nothing.
  • step back from the till to create more space between yourself and the cashier
  • if you don't need a bag and can easily carry a few items, stop asking for one. You're just dragging out the transaction time and increasing everyone's risk.
  • pack your own shopping
  • stop asking for cashback, especially weird amounts (like asking for £5.30 in cashback but I want 3 50ps in it, 2 20ps and a £2 coin) and use an ATM. Shops shouldn't be used as banks. And certainly don't come in looking money swapped or changed for you Hmm

But, yeah. Now isn't the time to come in with bags of pennies and sit and expect someone to count it for you because your pockets are "heavy". Start taking responsibility for your own actions. Shop trips should not be days out. It should be a matter of getting what you need and getting out of there, asap. We all know how dirty money is, and it's not reasonably practical for a cashier to wash their hands between every transaction. Be organised before you go shopping and help everyone out.

Our local area now has a "Help the People" group, where anyone can either offer help or ask for it, for free. It's a great idea, although there's been a little concern of who we allow in our homes.
My concern is, if my DP and I get it (some would say if we are wrong and didn't have it at the end of December), DP has emphysema (only diagnosed and in early stage at the middle of last year) and could be very unwell.
Only he drives. DS has COPD and Restricted airway syndrome, so could be more negatively impacted than most children his age (11). DD is 13 and has very limited ability with cooking, she has never used the rings of the cooker alone or the oven.
Even if I am reasonably OK with it, I would be expected to stay away, so can't get her to school and would need to be away from DP and DS but we don't have the room for that. DPs sister's live miles away, one is in Australia currently as well.
Honestly, no amount of planning or contingency us helping. And even if we did suddenly start coughing, and I'm meaning DD or I as DS and DP constantly cough due to their respective illnesses, we still won't know if it's this or something else as they won't test us.
I get the whole social distancing thing, to flatten the curve, I saw the NY Times simulation today and it does make sense but to me only when coupled with testing.

Randomlychosenname Hoping you haven’t got it, but hope it’s mild for you if you do Flowers

Calmonthesurfacebut · 15/03/2020 12:16

@cjt110
How are you this morning?

Also has anyone heard from Pineapple and her daughter?

I coughed in the night, which is not normal for me, but no temp. I’m not coughing all the time just now and again. If I breathe out hard or wiggle my chest it makes me cough. How do I know if it is cv or not?
