In short : COVID-19 was caused by eating animals (bats)

Ebola, swine flu, bird flu , HIV , SARS and VCJD were caused by eating animals.

COVID-19 and the like would not exist had we not eaten them.

And each one has caused an epidemic of some sorts, whether that be globally or on a social scale.

After doing my own research I'm definitely going to be incorporating more vegan food into my diet and then transitioning fully.

I KNOW this is about the C word, however it's an AIBU and let's be honest people post non relevant stuff in here all the time and dont get policed for it.

If everyone in the world went vegan then nobody would be eating wild animals, true. Not sure how you personally becoming vegan, never mind just 'incorporating more vegan food into your diet' (i.e. presumably still eatimg meat) will help with that.

There’s certainly an argument for not eating bushmeat or bats (which would cover off HIV, SARS, COVID-19 and Ebola); and for more responsible and ethical farming (Swine and bird flu’s).

To somehow say it’s the fault of all meat-eaters that these diseases have happened... wow.

Never mind the complete Western imperialism and racism being shown here. I’m pretty sure the people hunting for bushmeat and bats don’t have the wide access to lentils, quinoa and avocado that we do here... in some places in the world it’s eat meat or don’t eat at all.

The thing is, veganism by choice is a bit of a first world construct isn't it? We can be vegan by choice in the West because we are lucky enough to have access to an abundance of food which means we can easily get everything we need without eating animals at all.

I think people forget that for a lot of people on the planet that just isn't an option. Many humans still have to eat what is available to them which will ensure that they thrive.

I'm not talking specifically about eating bats here or whatever, I don't know how essential it is or not to eat bats in certain parts of the world or whether bats started SARS.

But I do think that we look at 'choosing veganism' through a very privileged lens.

I am a vegan. I certainly think that mass eating of animals in large numbers seems to create disease. It would make sense for everyone to cut down as a bare minimum.

Even the ‘hygienic’ conditions of Western farms can lead to issues- contributing to antibiotic resistance, etc.

However OP, I think you will get flamed for this! Ultimately this is up to everyone to decide for themselves isn’t it- along with how they choose to moderate their lifestyle (or not) in response to climate change, etc.

Lentils are one of the cheapest food, widely available everywhere, full of protein and can be used in many different forms. They might be associated with the Waitrose middle class now, but their origin is very humble.

Certainly less trouble and easier to find then hunting for bushmeat and bats.

Many scientific journals and the Chinese control and prevention institute are inferring this was caused by the disease crossing the species barrier - this most likely happened by it being consumed (much like other diseases) Corona is caused by the same disease as SARs - as per the WHO.

To back this up , china have banned eating all wild animals due to this outbreak and this is very clearly mentioned in chinese media.

Just because it's a instagram post doesnt mean it wont have truth to it. You just have to do your own research as well but I wasnt going to write a paper for you all.

I also think that pointing fingers and attributing home in the middle of this awful crisis isn’t helpful. We need to pull together at the moment- the time for analysis and debate is surely after, when we have all the evidence.

They're not sure which species this species originated in, but bats is a possibility.
Properly controlled meat production and food hygiene standards would have prevented this, no need for everyone to go vegan.

Of course being vegan isn't without its own risks, with cases of E.Coli in lettuces, Salmonella in salads, Listeria contaminations in red onions and the parasite Cyclospora being linked to some salads in the USA.
