I work in a hospital (North). It is eerily quiet. People are staying home rather than getting in the kind of scrapes that land them on A&E. I think people are scared of going to hospital. We have more beds available today than any other day since Christmas eve. I have an app that shows the bed state in all the local hospitals. They are nearly all similarly quiet.

It's the calm before the storm.

The scientific community has sent 2 open letters to the UK government, voicing their concerns about the response to the #COVID19 outbreak.

One comes from 198 academics in the field of maths and science, calling for urgent measures of social distancing across the UK.

I'd not thought about the peak being no where near, is Italy at its peak yet?

@WouldShouldCould didn't they predict the peak mid April?
Although unless they have a crystal ball how they would know that is anyone's guess. We can't go by China as they had the sense to lock the fuck down.

keepmoving · 14/03/2020 15:48

^WATCH: #FRANCE— MASSIVE anti-government protests in #Paris, #France today, defying #coronavirus lockdown.

Let’s see by how many thousands the cases jump from that big infection party in the following few days^ 🤔

So Boris is using reverse psychology... by the time we get told to stay at home etc everyone will say about time?!

Oakmaiden · 14/03/2020 15:50

I work in a hospital (North). It is eerily quiet.

I had to take my dd to one of the Swansea Hospitals yesterday for an outpatients appt. The place felt comparatively deserted. I could actually park in an actual car parking space, which has never happened before.

That said - the consultant did shake my daughter's hand - before saying "Oh, are we still allowed to be doing that?"

Lumene · 14/03/2020 15:50

all normal safety standards would have to be completely set aside.

Not a good idea when NHS capacity maxed out.

Angryrant55 · 14/03/2020 15:50

Mirror Breaking News - BREAKING Second death from Covid-19 in Norway.

RandomlyChosenName · 14/03/2020 15:52

keepmoving Yes, I think that is the exact strategy. The need people to want to stay at home and not need to be forced to. As we aren’t a dictatorship, we can’t force people and people break quarantine unless they want to do it themselves.

I really think that’s what Chris and Patrick (and Boris) have been trying to tell us.

Oakmaiden · 14/03/2020 15:55

I'd not thought about the peak being no where near, is Italy at its peak yet?

Italy are likely to have an artificial peak in about a week or so's time, as the measures the have introduced take effect.

A natural peak will probably start when around 20-30% or the population have been affected (so 15-20 million people), and end when around 60-70% (40-50 million) have. I think estimates are that up to 50% of people will catch it during a 3 week long peak. My numbers might be out (obviously) - but yeah, it is a way off yet. The (in)action the Govt is taking is intended to extend the amount of time it take to reach the peak and to stretch the peak so it lasts longer.

Finally, initial studies from Hong Kong suggest that, in some cases, corona might have a seriously adverse impact on long-term health even for those who do recover from it.

“They gasp if they walk a bit more quickly,” one expert said.

I'm getting close to scared now. Now we've reached 1000 cases and the death rate has doubled overnight it's time for action and as BJ isn't taking any then I'm going to do it for me and my family.

I think by Monday night we will be seeing a different stance from the government. I hope so anyway.

Mum asking if friends can still visit but she's not sure they should. I'm inclined to say no but I can't make that decision for her.

Alwaysreadyforbed · 14/03/2020 15:56

Just back from the cinema at the metro centre. It’s heaving there. I thought it’d be more quiet

Oakmaiden · 14/03/2020 15:57

corona might have a seriously adverse impact on long-term health mind you, those who have recovered haven't been "better" for very long.

cjt110 · 14/03/2020 15:57

In the last 24 hours I’ve noticed myself coughing to clear my throat. And the back of my throat is now a little sore. All 3 of us have sneezed a few times today.

husband has had a cough since feb half term.

Genuinely don’t know whether to say ok let’s self isolate or believe what my gut is saying.. that it’s just my imagination/a mild cold.

Bumblesbumbles · 14/03/2020 15:57

@ofwarren do you have the link to the report on the open letter sent to the govt? I can’t find it!

mumoftwodc · 14/03/2020 15:58

@ofwarren that's a huge jump in the Dutch cases. Do we know if they are testing suspected cases?

sadatchristmas1 · 14/03/2020 16:02

I'm confused by all the reports stating that the deaths were in desperately unwell people with underlying health problems. I understand they were ill from the virus but prior to the virus they must have been fit and well enough to travel, surely these deaths we are seeing are mainly in people who have come back from Italy and Iran. If they aren't and these deaths are in people who caught the virus from community spread then this virus must be much wider spread than the government has lead us to believe!

Angryrant55 · 14/03/2020 16:02

Nope - only testing those who need treatment in the Netherlands

Quartz2208 · 14/03/2020 16:02

Of Warren I don’t think enough time has past a serious virus takes time it took 2-3 months for me to feel normal from flu.

confusedandtired99 · 14/03/2020 16:02

Boris has been quiet quiet since his last press conference hasn’t he? Or have I missed his presence?

ofwarren · 14/03/2020 16:03

@bumblesbumbles
I'll find it, I'll try to be quick 😁

It's attached to this tweet
I just tweeted an open letter asking the UK Gov't to provide the evidence base for their policy decisions re: coronavirus. But I accidentally linked to the list of signatories not the letter. Here it is: t.co/ie9HUGj629

OakMaiden could you explain this a bit more please?

Do you mean possible school closures?
