The Cobra meeting is tommorw according to the BBC.

RedToothBrush · 15/03/2020 09:57

Blimey you would think they would have said apart from violent crimes at least. There are still stabbings and violent burglaries going on and what deterrent will there be if this happens.

No need to stockpile. Just go round to your neighbours armed, break in and nick everything.

As long as you don't kill anyone the police won't do shit.

What kind of a message is this policy????!

TheElementsOfMedical · 15/03/2020 10:00

It must be very reassuring for Nadine and her mum to have had tests and know they had it but are now clear Shame that feeling of reassurance won’t happen for the rest of us!

Exactly! Makes a mockery of the suggestion that we need us all to keep going as normal until we have symptoms, then isolate for a week, and then get right back into society as though we're now part of the magic human firebreak. How the heck are we ordinary mortals supposed to know whether we've achieved patriotic human firebreak status?

DrBlackbird · 15/03/2020 10:00

bikini the biggest changes that occurred after 9/11 were really behind the scenes. We still feel them even if we don't see them explicitly. The biggest change was a combination of political and ideological. The increase in surveillance in the US was exponential in the 'fight against terrorism' with new laws brought in etc. We will see it again now. China already doing so. Such events are godsends to governments with a taste for authoritarianism.

middleager · 15/03/2020 10:00

Watched Andrew Marr. Matt Hancock is really out of his depth.

CharlieTangoBanana · 15/03/2020 10:00

Matt Hancock "we will do everything we can to protect life"

RedToothBrush · 15/03/2020 10:02

Nadine is telling you to use your other hand sanitiser in much the same way that Rees Mogg tells those struggling to use their other money.

Absolutely no idea what like in the real world is like.

They've never wrestled in Tesco aisles for tinned tomatoes or camped outside Aldi at opening time for the next pasta delivery nor gone fully armed to Sainsers for bog roll nor been to four branches of Asda for a pair of poke on pj's in the right size (OK the last one might just be me...)

chomalungma · 15/03/2020 10:02

There is nothing new in this interview.

Hancock looks tired.

Skittlesss · 15/03/2020 10:03

Thanks Red :)

I feel a bit “weird” (for want of a better word) about these high-profile folk having had it and recovered and then telling us their tales about it. Part of me feels like it’s the gov telling stories to make us feel better about their lack of action.

Skittlesss · 15/03/2020 10:04

Feels odd that so many well known folk have it when they’re not properly testing us mere mortals.

CharlieTangoBanana · 15/03/2020 10:06

The NHS plan is to bring in retired doctors, return retired doctors to work and train other people to "man the ventilators"

What a fucking knob

Angryrant55 · 15/03/2020 10:07

Think we going to see big issues in enforcing it - even the reality from Italy won't persuade people.

I imagine that Matt Hancock is working 18 hours days and they’re ALL out of their depth. Given that it’s been 100 years since we dealt with anything like this...

OldQueen1969 · 15/03/2020 10:08

The only investigate loss of life crimes thing is worrying.

Surely a clear message should be sent out that looting etc will be a priority and dealt with harshly - I believe in the US during hurricanes etc there can be a shoot to kill policy in place - I know this is because it is a gun owning country and am absolutely NOT advocating this but it has to be made clear that people undermining the community effort to cope with this unprecendented disaster will face the harshest consequences. Anyone taking advantage of this situation to commit crime when defences are down should be ashamed of themselves, but human nature is what it is.

If this message isn't sent out strongly the inevitable consequence will be the necessity for martial law I fear, and the presence of military on our streets to bolster law enforcement.

All these years of cuts and austerity and the chickens are coming home to roost.

TheElementsOfMedical · 15/03/2020 10:10

government apologists on here who were insisting our special British scientists know better than every other world leading expert across the globe

Nice one Loppy - all those "It's The Science!" supporters who also said "Boris says the experts say we don't need data for our models therefore we don't need to test anymore!'. WTF. No real scientist would say they don't want more, ongoing and accurate, data for their models.

And within 48 hours, even before the government can get their rigged, reduced testing plan to feed through, the previous testing regimen (already inadequate) reveals that the "expert special British data-less science modelling" was wrong.

So now they (and their supporters) have to back peddle on the "flatten the curve by doing SFA" and "herd immunity" narrative.

fedup21 · 15/03/2020 10:10

The NHS plan is to bring in retired doctors, return retired doctors to work and train other people to "man the ventilators"

What if those retired doctors don’t want to??

MustBeDueSomeBetterFeet · 15/03/2020 10:14

@fedup21 Absolutely! And won't a lot of retired doctors be in the vulnerable age range for this virus anyway, thereby putting them directly in harm's way?!

DrBlackbird · 15/03/2020 10:14

Charlie so the gov't thinks exposing retired i.e. over 65 to active infections is a good idea? So that they can then also get sick and require a ventilator?? Hmm...

chomalungma · 15/03/2020 10:14

Matt Hancock distancing himself from the Herd Immunity discussion that came out last week.

When will Boris do another press conference with his experts?

mrshoho · 15/03/2020 10:15

Until we see our leaders and elected officials get their hands dirty I see no reason to expect retired NHS staff to put themselves in the thick of it. This do as we say won't wash. This whole situation will either be a leveller where we are all in this together or simply highlight the differences of the privileged few and the rest of us. Judging so far on who gets tested and who doesn't is telling. If Boris wants a community spirit approach he better get himself and his cronies out there.

Alkaloise · 15/03/2020 10:16

Well, I've told my workplace I'm self-isolating. Since this morning - while still achey, though less so - I've now got a tight feeling in my chest and what feels like fluid in my lower lungs. I'm following the Covid-timeline to a tee; day 6-7 is the average for respiratory issues to come to light.

I've made it clear I'm almost sure I have the virus. I don't think they will close.

CharlieTangoBanana · 15/03/2020 10:16

Listening to MH was utterly frustrating, he talks utter bollocks, talking about hotels being perfectly suitable for treating patients. How the hell is that supposed to work, dial 0 for a nurse, dial 1 for a bedpan, dial 2 for a vomit bowl.
He even said "getting oxygen into these places could be a challenge"

BeijingBikini · 15/03/2020 10:17

TBF, if I got made redundant from my travel company (looking increasingly likely given that the vast majority of our business is in places like Spain, Thailand and Disneyland) then I'd happily volunteer for NHS or food delivery, if it comes down to that.

Though it would be great to know if this strange cold I'm having rn is CV, so I know if I'm immune or not!

middleager · 15/03/2020 10:18

It's laughable. Isn't this special plan just the same as Italy or France or Spain?

Act slowly, allow lots to be ill and die and finally close down?

Tell me how our plan differs? It's the same actions but even later.
At least those countries closed schools.
