Vera did he listen to the press conference? The people will die line.

I suppose some will not change, also why other measures are scrutinised and rejected, but it works for many people. It worked for me hence feeling in a state of on edge the whole time.

@SubjectMatterExpert
no there is no evidence that you become immune after having it. I read somewhere in fact that people are catching it multiple times
This is worrying me.
Will it be like seasonal flu? Will we need a jab every year? That's when there is a vaccine of course.
This is going to mean changes to our lives in the long-term.

Ds had tonsillitis last week, left with a cough but no fever or other symptoms. I’m worried people out and about will think he has the virus Confused

Where? What is the evidence?

MetalDog · 14/03/2020 08:07

@stoptherideiwanttogetoff

they are not testing because the reported cases would be triple if not more..

Or because they still don’t have enough tests to test for more or (even more concerning) so they can prop up their 1% death rate theory by saying well our models show far more people had mild cases so although X many people have died it’s only a tiny proportion of the total that have had it (but with no hard evidence due to a lack of tests).

As for Wales saying up to 20,000 may die - China’s approach ensured no more than 3000 died and they still calculated the death rate as being 5.7% in Wuhan where the vast majority of deaths occurred.

What possible motivation is their for China to exaggerate the death rate? Far more motivation for our own government to minimise it - in my opinion.

@Ohmymg I was sent home from work for that exact reason this week.
I had a flu and ear infection 5 weeks ago (before cv was even in my country). I was left with a long lasting cough from it and due to others panicking in the office I was told to wfh until it's gone.
I know, my gp and my boss know it's not CV, but every time people hear someone cough now they are worried.
Unfortunately me being asked to leave in the middle of the day only made things worse, as people then thought I had gone away for testing Confused

littledrummergirl · 14/03/2020 08:14

Dd was ill just before Christmas and had a cough until the end of February. Middle of February we had a letter from NHS England saying the school had an outbreak of whooping cough. Dd was vaccinated so only had a mild case which was why we didn't think anything of it but loads of pupils there are still coughing!
Dd school was much quieter on Friday. We are keeping her home now.

VivaLeBeaver · 14/03/2020 08:15

What’s the actual definition of a mass gathering? Has a specific number being mentioned? I can’t find it.

Ohmymg · 14/03/2020 08:17

@Dk20 I think instances like this are going to increase and lead to massive issues.

Ds is playing football this morning and whilst his own team mates parents know it’s not CV the others don’t. A lady coughing in the local shop was commented on by others yesterday too. Ds tells me loads of people have been to school with symptoms like his(even after advice issues Thursday eve) so the school is obviously aware of it. The advice for a new persistent cough seems black and white but when you drill down it isn’t. New since 6pm Thursday? What if it started Wednesday? How often is persistent? Do cough and fever have to be mutual?

IrisAtwood · 14/03/2020 08:30

@SubjectMatterExpert

People are not necessarily catching it multiple times.

What you are referring to is that some diagnosed people test negative on day 10 (for example), then test positive on day 14. This is thought to be a result of the test not being very sensitive and the natural changes in viral load that occur.

It would be a very unusual virus for people to keep catching the same virus. The immune system can recognise and destroy the virus once it has been encountered before and as along as it hasn’t mutated.

So far there’s no evidence of significant mutation occurring either.

IrisAtwood · 14/03/2020 08:34

@Ohmymg It is either a cough or a fever as well as if they occur together. This is because of the range of ways this virus presents in different individuals.

Personally I would self isolate if I developed a new, persistent cough even on the day that it started. But that’s because I am acutely aware of the risks of infecting others and I can do it without penalty.

LarkDescending · 14/03/2020 08:34

I am not sure the “mass gatherings” ban talked about in the press will be as broad as some expect.

The rationale being given is to reduce demands on the emergency services. Most private events, even large ones, don’t tend to have police and ambulance presence. So perhaps they are really targeting a small subset of events.

Exochord · 14/03/2020 08:35

Friend has just told me her DC will continue going to school until the British government sees fit to close them, because children are at less risk of catching it. And this is why we are doomed, because she’s a well educated professional and she still believes this. She’s going to a soft play today! I said other countries have closed schools and she texted back 🤷‍♀️

IrisAtwood · 14/03/2020 08:35

@VivaLeBeaver Over 1000 people seems to be the chosen number. The way I feel at the moment even two people together feels like a dangerous mass gathering! 🤣

Ijustneed · 14/03/2020 08:38

Just posted on the old thread, sorry. Family in Berlin have just told me at least one of the unis is completely closed until July.

My mum lives in flats for elderly people in the UK, no visitors are allowed there now.

IrisAtwood · 14/03/2020 08:39

@Comenext We will only need an annual vaccination if the virus starts to mutate and continues to circulate the way that flu does.

And that’s once we have a vaccination. It’s estimated it will take 18 months to develop one and then it will need to manufactured and delivered. So it will be over two years I think.

Lumene · 14/03/2020 08:41

How will they know when we get to the ‘herd immunity’ percentage if they are not testing?

Ohmymg · 14/03/2020 08:44

Thank you iris ds symptoms started a week gone Thursday. Fever lasted 3 days. Cough is chesty and quite productive. Sought 111 advice last Friday who advised his symptoms didn’t fit the “dry cough, non runny nose” etc. So has socialised since and been to school since. Advice now seems to be cold symptoms also need isolation.

His football league is going ahead, seemingly in line with the schools still being open. I’d imagine loads of kids will be in same boat
