Oldqueen oddly enough my DD and I were commenting just yesterday that we thought we were seeing a jump in the amount of young hooded teens out in force. Last night more of the same only older lads... Not sure telling everyone that they're only going to investigate crimes involving loss of life is really so very helpful. Like a 'get out jail for free' ticket being announced...

Comenext · 15/03/2020 10:20

How can retired NHS staff go back to work if they are over 70?

Quartz2208 · 15/03/2020 10:20

Yes of course he looks tired he is fighting against a enemy that can’t be negotiated with or killed and presumably given he is a politician knows not much more than us

wiltingfast · 15/03/2020 10:21

Vv long read but worth if you have time

Coronavirus article vg

CharlieTangoBanana · 15/03/2020 10:21

@DrBlackbird Maybe the real motive is to bring back retired medics and they get ill and die it will bring the pension bill down significantly.

I have chilling images of BJ of a child when he used to say "I want to be king of the world" BJ = Hitler much

Meruem · 15/03/2020 10:21

I worked in the courts following the London riots and we had 24 hour court sittings to deal with all the cases. Very harsh punishments were handed out, like prison sentences for stealing a can of coke. So I suspect the same will apply now. I have seen talk of drafting in the military to guard supermarkets etc (scary to think we may well need this!). So I think the government are well aware of the increased risk of looting etc.

jopjop · 15/03/2020 10:23

I feel a bit “weird” (for want of a better word) about these high-profile folk having had it and recovered and then telling us their tales about it. Part of me feels like it’s the gov telling stories to make us feel better about their lack of action.*

It's natural that high profile people will be asked about their experiences. And the fact is most people who contract the illness will only have "mild" symptoms.

Lumene · 15/03/2020 10:25

@wiltingfast that article is by someone with no relevant expertise and is addressed here by someone who does have expertise:

@Meruem I see a flaw in that plan, prisons are overcrowded and poorly staffed now, what happens when prison officers and then prisoners start coming down with Covid-19, our prison could become a hotbed of infection amongst an aging prison population. It's a recipe for riots, unrest and prisons that are even more dangerous.

I'm no fan of boris Johnson but this kind of conspiracy theory talk is ridiculous and poisonous.

Angryrant55 · 15/03/2020 10:29

Remember through the main briefing after the riots was plans for evictions if one member was convicted.

Meruem · 15/03/2020 10:31

I don’t disagree with you Charlie but I realised long ago that the government doesn’t give a crap about what happens in prisons! They were overcrowded during the London riots too but it didn’t stop them. They have been short staffed for god knows how long but it hasn’t been addressed. Prisoners will also be low priority in the public’s concerns (harsh but true). The entire criminal justice system has been decimated by funding cuts but it’s so low on most people’s radar, they’ve been able to get away with it.

Angryrant55 · 15/03/2020 10:31

Sky News Breaking - 'British Medical Association Council Chair Dr Chaand Nagpaul has told Sky News the NHS has "about a quarter of critical care beds that Germany has" and it is "important that we now see transparently what plans the Government has to expand that capacity.'

BeyondMymymymyCorona · 15/03/2020 10:32

Lumene, whatever that tweet said, it's been deleted now

"This Tweet is unavailable."

Well, that's reassuring.

SonicRevolution · 15/03/2020 10:32

I personally think that Boris Johnson, Matt Hancock and Professor Chris Witty look really scared (and tired of course). What do they know that we don't? The real numbers from China and Iran?

AllTheProsecco · 15/03/2020 10:34

@jopjop yes, this is what I think too. Even Nadine and her mum...

defthand · 15/03/2020 10:34

@Lynamic

Deft hand that twitter comment is wrong by the way

How is it incorrect?

It accords with a Dutch report that more than half their ICU patients are under 50 as well, btw, and that information has come from the chairman of the Dutch Institute of Intensive Care — surely a reliable source.

I wish the BMA were doing more in the way of outwardly questioning what the science is behind this herd immunity?

Or have they and I’ve missed it?

DrBlackbird · 15/03/2020 10:35

Can someone please start thread 27 ... I've found the combination of mums reporting in from different countries and one place to consolidate information has been incredibly useful and helpful (thank you ofwarren)

middleager · 15/03/2020 10:40

@jopjop I agree.
We can't hear the tales of many casualties sadly.

The 38 year old marathon runner in Italy was in a bad way for three weeks. He did talk afterwards about how awful it was.

In war there will be propaganda and I do expect more 'it's just a cold. We survived a world war and are made of true grit' type tales pushed out.

Michelleoftheresistance · 15/03/2020 10:47

I personally think that Boris Johnson, Matt Hancock and Professor Chris Witty look really scared

They are out of their depths and know that history will probably judge them unfavourably. I don't think they are malicious or playing an evil game with ulterior motives. They are just not the best people for the job (or at least the first two aren't). The political ladder filters out so many talented people and lets the entitled, butt-lickers, or the plodders make their way to the top.

Johnson - pretty useless for anything but procreation. Apparently he used to be funny. Just go take some pre-paternity leave but don't infect Carrie or baby N (where N = an integer).

Hancock - mediocre. I think he is trying hard and his heart is in the right place. Less useless than Johnson, but that's not saying much.

Witty - means well. Late career collector of initials after his name. In another age he'd be selling encyclopedias or cleaning products door to door, but has risen through the advisory ranks. I think he's the most competent of the three, but has fallen into a herd group-think shared by others at the top of his field government linked medics. Note how many a step or two below him with fresher qualifications are increasingly voicing their disagreement.

I'm not making party political points. I don't see much stature or competence in other parties. Oh, and I've never missed Theresa May and Jeremy Hunt so much. In which alternative reality should I be putting forward that thought?

ajandjjmum · 15/03/2020 10:48
