Benjamin Kentish - 'Of course, with only those in hospital being tested now, real figure will be much higher.'

Angryrant55 · 14/03/2020 14:59

Tim Shipman - 'Lots of focus on "herd immunity". The bigger UK govt focus seems to me to be reducing the height of the peak period line to best help the NHS and those at most risk. That's nothing to do with herd immunity. It's about using measures that squash the sombrero when they most work.'

The NEU is puzzled why schools are not closed.

Angryrant55 · 14/03/2020 15:01

The ASCL want all Ofsted inspections suspended.

confusedandtired99 · 14/03/2020 15:02

I can’t cope. Why are people still asking if they should cancel their holiday or if the virus is being hyped up?

Or even worse still saying it’s just flu!

Angryrant55 · 14/03/2020 15:03

Apparently one of the Uruguay cases went to a wedding attended by 500 people shortly before getting diagnosed.

MarshaBradyo · 14/03/2020 15:04

Confused I am surrounded by family who are still talking about Y2K hoax can you imagine!

MarshaBradyo · 14/03/2020 15:05

Well when I say surrounded they’re not in the U.K. not that unseeing.

fedup21 · 14/03/2020 15:06

I don’t think people would be doing this if the government had closed schools and told people to work from home.

It’s because everything else is carrying on as normal-albeit with a bit of extra hand washing-people feel confused and kept in the dark.

Pppppickupapenguin · 14/03/2020 15:07

The figures released today were probably tested on Thursday (before the policy change).

@Oakmaiden at least one person in those figures is definitely from Thursday.

Theme parks, Butlins, National Trust etc are still open and busy. Some people are thick. And those employees have no choice.

The government needs to put into place huge restrictions and quickly to close everything that can be and make everyone who can work from home, including closing schools with penalties for those who disobey.

We can’t wait until the end of the week.

Terryscombover · 14/03/2020 15:10

@juneybean - if you look at the curve for infection- this stage will look virtually flat - we're so far from the peak it's hard to imagine.

Angryrant55 · 14/03/2020 15:10

To fair cancelling now might mean you only lose the deposit- if you wait till its cancelled for you you might not get any of the money back if the hotel company or travel company go bust. Nobody can fully say how August or September will be.

littledrummergirl · 14/03/2020 15:11

My mil last night said the government and BBC are scaremongering, it can't be that bad, only the flu, etc. She is in the vulnerable group. Head, bang, Wall!!!

Angryrant55 · 14/03/2020 15:11

The government wants the herd immunity.

MarshaBradyo · 14/03/2020 15:12

Yes which is why I think we’re going to have to get used to leaps rather think they are high now

Angryrant55 · 14/03/2020 15:13

Plenty of people I know still think that - the UK stiff upper lip element will be in for a huge awakening when 500k die.

Michelleoftheresistance · 14/03/2020 15:13

I think for the normal, healthy population they will leave things normal (which means schools open) for now to let the mild cases build up to get herd immunity in the normal, healthy population.

I know I keep saying this, but the 'normal population' running schools and other essential jobs contains a lot of people who are not healthy, who have immune issues, cancer treatment, chronic illness, heart conditions..... they're vulnerable too. This isn't going to be a bit of a case of the sniffles leading to happy immunity for them.

It's all very well ring fencing care homes (which hasn't happened yet according to govt guidance, only where a care home group has independently acted to protect their residents) but unless guidance is released fast that people in vulnerable populations and living with vulnerable populations should now work from home/stay at home, and employers must accept this, employers will not release them.

People are going to have to choose whether they protect themselves or give up their job, and some are already in that situation.

PoisoningPigeons · 14/03/2020 15:13

The government wants the herd immunity.

They can get in the fucking queue first to lead the way, then. When I see the CMO, CSO and Cabinet licking the handrails on the London Underground, maybe I'll be more supportive of their special secret British science data-less mathematical modelling.

Angryrant55 · 14/03/2020 15:14

Jess Brammar - 'Labour are calling for private sector hospital beds to be requisitioned to help the NHS cope with coronavirus, which seems to me would be a very popular idea at the moment'

Hear hear.

juneybean · 14/03/2020 15:15

Gosh it's unimaginable, but you're right it is just the start!

RandomlyChosenName · 14/03/2020 15:16

Keep Calm and Carry On is the complete opposite of what we should be doing now.

Janemarpling · 14/03/2020 15:16

Arlene foster thinks schools will shut for 16 weeks.
Can't see Boris going with that.

Angryrant55 · 14/03/2020 15:18

Arlene said it first the other day after she left COBRA - it probably was discussed but ruled out.
