@AngelicaKauffman To be honest, that's really not how your post came across.

But including all older people in that figure, plus those with health issues, I think we are looking at more like 40% of the population than 20%- and yes, that is still easier than isolating everyone, but you have to consider the knock on effects of that too.

Some schools won't be able to open with a combination of vulnerable people and ill people self isolating. Some workplaces won't be able to function. Some of these people are HCPs, some of them work in the care sector.

I don't think it's as simple as just saying "anyone at increased risk should self isolate".

It's also true that some otherwise young and healthy people end up needing ICU care, as well.

Angryrant55 · 14/03/2020 14:46

Barts is a heart and cancer hospital.

juneybean · 14/03/2020 14:46

The increase today is shocking and a sharper curve than I thought. How can they think we are still weeks from the peak?

wherearemychickens · 14/03/2020 14:47

That's a lot of men in that list.

Angryrant55 · 14/03/2020 14:47

Because at the peak we might be getting 3-4k deaths a day.

MarshaBradyo · 14/03/2020 14:47

China will win any numbers count on this. But once it’s not contained early everyone is in the same boat.

user127819 · 14/03/2020 14:48

@Angryrant55 I believe it was Barts NHS trust, not sure if actually St Bartholomews Hospital or one of the other hospitals in that trust.

wherearemychickens · 14/03/2020 14:48

Yes, this is only the beginning.

Angryrant55 · 14/03/2020 14:48

@wherearemychickens
Men are 75-80% of the ICU and deaths in Italy. For some reason it affects Men more.

Angryrant55 · 14/03/2020 14:49

My local hospital is part of Barts Trust.

SemiSkimmedMilk · 14/03/2020 14:50

Why should they disproportionately have to bear the costs of isolating for a long period?

I would like to see more government help for people with existing health problems but the stark reality is these people are more at risk. Higher costs need to be balanced against a greater benefit of isolating.

SansaSnark · 14/03/2020 14:50

@juneybean I think, because, for example, they still think Italy is weeks away from the peak too.

Angryrant55 · 14/03/2020 14:50

Lewis Goodall - 'New: I understand govt departments are setting up “Emergency Operations Centres” to lead their respective departments’ response to #COVID_19uk. Leadership of each department concerned have asked staff for volunteers. Hope is to have potential to run 24/7, if needed.'

juneybean · 14/03/2020 14:51

Oh really? :( bloody awful stuff.

Chersfrozenface · 14/03/2020 14:51

"1140 positive

Across the UK, 21 patients who tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19) have sadly died."

So up until now, the death rate among those tested is approx. 1.85%, i.e. nearer 2% than 1%.

Of course we have no way of knowing what the death rate is amongst those who contract COVID-19 because we're not testing everyone with symptoms.

(Can't bold the quote, asterisks don't work for me.)

SemiSkimmedMilk · 14/03/2020 14:52

Actually SansaSnark I completely agree with what you said.

Saz12 · 14/03/2020 14:53

My workplace has 4 staff members. 2 of us have asthma, one has heart disease.
If we self isolate we shut down workplace.

FlamingoAndJohn · 14/03/2020 14:53

I’ve just seen that a newborn and mother have tested positive.

SabineSchmetterling · 14/03/2020 14:53

China isn’t even in the top 10 countries based on cases per 1m people. Italy has been more than five times more badly affected than China and is, by a long shot, the worst affected country in the world. We are two weeks behind them and our cases seem to be going up faster than theirs were two weeks ago.

Kokeshi123 · 14/03/2020 14:53

I love the media story of China sending a plane full of medical staff and equipment, including ventilators to help Italy.

  1. They sold the equipment--they didn't donate it for free.
  2. A lot of the stuff went to Chinese communities in Italy
  3. The CCP bears huge responsibility for this mess because they failed to close down the disgusting live animal markets and then wasted three weeks trying to cover up the outbreak.
Widget123 · 14/03/2020 14:54

@contentedsoul clearly you haven’t done the maths on this, and no it’s not ‘like the flu’, it’s far worse and far more contagious. If we let this virus free flow through the community which our government is currently doing, we are looking at around 80% of our 60 million strong population being infected. If 2-3% of those die that’s over 1million people. And that’s just in our tiny little country, so have a think what will happen if we all just have your let’s not give a fuck and stop overreaction attitude and see how many millions die across the globe.

You might want to do a bit of reading on what’s happening in Italy before you continue to comment on how pathetic we all are. Perhaps the Italian doctors and nurses who are desperately trying to wake us up to what’s coming should get a grip too?

airforsharon · 14/03/2020 14:55

I'd wager it's considerably more than 20% who'd be considered vulnerable, and would question whether those who aren't would have the time, energy & desire to 'rally round'. I'm a 50 yo asthmatic single parent to 3 (one secondary school, 2 primary). I have no family within a 2 hour drive, and given the risks assoc with corona if I or one of the dc became infected I couldn't ask them for help. I also have autoimmune disease.
There's no point to me self isolating if the dc are still attending school & bring the virus home. I'm not panicking - i'm more worried about the practicalities of keeping a household of dcs/dogs/cats afloat if I become ill than catching the virus at the moment - but I do feel that we're being involved in a medical experiment that no way would I have signed up for - I feel like a sitting duck.

Namethecat · 14/03/2020 14:56

I live in the Lake district. We are social distancing as much as possible.
Decided to take lunch out and have a mini picnic in the car whilst looking at a view.
Drove to Keswick and can see car parks full , market in full swing , people walking about almost shoulder to shoulder.

Angryrant55 · 14/03/2020 14:57

Benjamin Kentish - 'Scientists hope it’ll slow by 20-25% after new 7-day isolation advice abd a further 20-25% once household isolation introduced. But suspect we’ll see more drastic measures earlier than planned (e.g. banning public gatherings this week) as a result of faster than expected spread.'

Homkaismycat · 14/03/2020 14:58

On FB I just have seen someone posted video of a neighbour who supposedly have Coronavirus for a week and got worse and his wife called ambulance as could not managed home anymore.
The ambulance came in a normal green clothes, paramedics wearing short sleeves etc- NO mask or hamza suits.
There also is a video they taking this same neighbour into the ambulance and again, no masks or suits etc..
Also the wife was told no any specific precautions, she literally went out shopping after!
I can’t believe it actually.
Are they so lax that they would not wear protective suit?
