Families leaving Madrid and heading for the coast are spreading the virus throughout the country. A week ago the province of Murcia was only getting its first case of coronavirus.

Lillian,

You don’t need to get the infectivity rate to zero to stop an epidemic, merely below one.

So, a few people not showing common sense is fine. It is only if the majority (or a sizeable minority) disobey the rules that they don’t work.

liberoncolours · 13/03/2020 17:47

Thing is we talk about childcare for essential workers and assume that just means medical people. But we still need people to man the power stations, to deliver essentials , to work in supermarkets, food processing factories and petrol stations etc. That's a lot of people. Many households will have such a worker

I agree!

GabsAlot · 13/03/2020 17:51

exactly theres no point-also the peak wont hit till may so is everyone going to stay in till then-unlikely

Deadringer · 13/03/2020 17:52

Where possible here too (ireland) people are being asked to work from home. My dh is wfh for the next few weeks, this has never happened before, and my ds is being set up to wfh, also unprecedented. None of us are particularily worried about the virus, but we are adhering to the guidelines for the greater good, which i am sure most people will also do. Personally i thought it was too soon to close the schools, but now that the decision is made i am actually relieved.

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 13/03/2020 17:54

Not sure if it’s been said, however I’ve just seen that Spain has declared a state of emergency

SweetMarmalade · 13/03/2020 17:55

Listened to someone on Sky News talking about when schools were closed during the Swine Flu outbreak. As soon as the schools re-opened the numbers spiked again.

WhatWouldYouDoWhatWouldJesusDo · 13/03/2020 17:55

I think you'd be surprised........I live in the lake District and even Keswick and Bowness are eerily quiet. It's good to see in a way and I really hope it continues.

Schools and businesses have been closed in my area too so they obviously aren't flocking away in droves. My local Town on the other hand was packed, and there were a fair few kids being dragged round. A couple were hacking their guts up 🙄🙄🙄 they probably just have a bug but why risk it ?? They could make someone else really ill.

My sister made a good point earlier about samples etc on makeup counters. Why haven't they been binned ?? They're all disinfecting and cleaning constantly but it's still ok to share a lippy that 100 people have already used..Confused

ShanghaiDiva · 13/03/2020 17:59

@BackforGood
Exactly.
I think we sometimes forget that people are basically the same. To be direct when figures were going up in China we were all fucking terrified.
Comments about whether my comment is stupid or not, spectacularly miss the point: decisive action was needed and it was taken.
Nobody cared whether people could stay at home for 2 weeks or more, it was going to happen and happen it did.

Justtrying · 13/03/2020 18:01

Very quite just outside Liverpool today too. Maybe there might be a benefit to me losing my job of 13 years last week after Flybe collapsed. At least DH can still go to work for now. Holiday booked and paid for to Tenerife in 2 weeks, a break in the sun would cheer us all up but can't see it happening. Very sorry for everyone who is medically affected. In having to seriously consider retraining and leaving my career of 20 years. That's if there are any jobs in the future

justasking111 · 13/03/2020 18:08

Liverpool has italian fans arrived today for the football which is cancelled.

Mums1234 · 13/03/2020 18:09

Justrying, I'm sorry to hear you lost your job and I hope something positive comes out of this for you x

liberoncolours · 13/03/2020 18:10

I have just been chatting to a hospital ventilator distributor online. The lead in time is 1 - 2 weeks - that is the not expedited time, it could be quicker. They are primarily manufactured in China. I think some speedy action and effective diplomatic negotiation on the part of bojo and macron and other leaders is in order now.

eeeyoresmiles · 13/03/2020 18:11

In a wartime situation (which this is), if schools or childcare are kept going for 'essential workers', whoever sets that up will specify who they are. The idea that it isn't just doctors and nurses will almost certainly occur to the government.

Why do schools have to stay fully open to everyone because there's a subset who need the childcare for essential work? It doesn't make anyone safer, in fact it makes people less safe by having much higher numbers of kids mixing, half of whom could perfectly well be at home.

liberoncolours · 13/03/2020 18:12

And if things are effectively slowed down it will be after May. How long can children stay isolated from other children, no playdates, no playareas for realistically?!

Jux · 13/03/2020 18:12

DH has just been off in the countryside and says that the roads from London (to Devon) are pretty rammed - not as bad as holiday season but very much fuller than we normally have at this time of year. It's not lovely weather here either.....

We think that quite a lot of people are getting out of London and coming to their second homes etc here. This would echo what is happening in Spain.

Expect some fast outbreaks here in Devon. DH, me, my brother and my dd are all more than usually vulnerable for people our age (3 of us in our 60s) due to underlying health conditions. DD has a vulnerable immune system due to a health condition.

I'm not delighted at people running from there to here bringing the virus with them. With luck they'll all just stay in their second homes and self-isolate there.

Inkpaperstars · 13/03/2020 18:13

This thing about about schools closing causing childcare issues for key workers is a massive red herring. They can remain open for supervising children people in certain roles, takes a bit of organisation but not much. It would reduce the spread probably caused by children massively. The key workers who want schools to remain open presumably would accept their children being there as they would be anyway (just even more exposed) if schools were open. The key workers who refuse and insist on taking their children out of school...again if they are going to take that decision they will do eithe way, even more likely if schools are full.

It really is something that any half decent problem solving team would have decided in minutes. Other countries have done so.

Bool · 13/03/2020 18:14

@alloutoffucks many of us are going to get it. They just don’t want us to get it all at once. And if 60% (as is likely) get it then we have population immunity.

Mummyoflittledragon · 13/03/2020 18:16

CallmeAngelina
I thought Trump said US citizens travelling from schengen countries were exempt from the ban. Because? Superior genes or something.

Bool · 13/03/2020 18:21

@ShanghaiDiva does China think it is out of the woods? With 80,000 people officially getting it (maybe that was 800,000) in reality. What about the rest of the population now they are coming out of hiding? Do people think it won’t flare up again. I am scared if that is the case.

Bool · 13/03/2020 18:22

I want schools to stay open as long as possible. We are still a looooong way off the peak. School closures will come but we shouldn’t do them too soon.

alloutoffucks · 13/03/2020 18:29

@bool The virus has already mutated once. We will not have population immunity to any virus mutation. This policy is not based on any science.

MyPartInHistory · 13/03/2020 18:39

Well I can say that posh legal-land in London was eerily quiet today. Very unusually, I bought a first class ticket on a usually rammed packed full commuter train to get there, on the basis I would have some space to breathe, and the train was empty. When we arrived in London, another train was pulling up and that was empty too. It was very early, but still.......

CatEnabler · 13/03/2020 18:41

I'm a teacher and I think there should be registration taken online or via text if no device available (school mobile to the attendance officer) in some fashion but it's probably not possible to organise this now. Obviously the IT tech guys would know how to sort it for 'next time' but you can locate devices, mobiles to, I'm sure with pinging or whatever it's called to locate the log on and this would be proof for local authorities to persue in terms of both absence and jetting off anywhere they shouldn't. It's all very big brother but in extreme cases maybe it's needed? You can't call it invasion of privacy as the school knows where everyone's registered address or linked addresses are in the first place.

MsSafina · 13/03/2020 18:41

I don't think people are getting the seriousness of this. I know people who are determined to get to Spain for their holidays.

Bool · 13/03/2020 18:43

@alloutoffucks We will always have some immunity to a mutation. In the same way we keep some immunity to flu and colds even if they mutate a bit. I bet when Covid-19 hits China for a second time, those who had it in Wuhan will be protected now.
