Families leaving Madrid and heading for the coast are spreading the virus throughout the country. A week ago the province of Murcia was only getting its first case of coronavirus.

i know this is not going to end well for many and whether we all know that or not as people up high meant to be protecting and easing us i found what Boris said really fucking awful.there are some thing we dont need to be told,or not in that way at the beginning of a talk on how to save us!
"we will be doing certain thing yeh,but you know, some of you will die so yeh keep calm and carry on ok!but make sure you know when you look to ur left that loved on might die tomorrow.cool so next subject"

ShanghaiDiva · 13/03/2020 16:59

@AnneKipanki
Thanks.
The Chinese govt took decisive action that curtailed the spread of the virus. Headlines in the uk feature Boris saying you will lose loved ones. My province has a slightly higher population than the uk and has approx 700 cases and no deaths...an autocratic govt saved lives and I am grateful for the incredible effort of the Chinese, not only those in the medical profession, but also who ensured we still had food (and toilet paper) in the shops.
The measures taken were tough, but were the same for everyone: chinese and non Chinese. I am subject to the same quarantine procedures as my next door neighbour, no special treatment for foreigners and rightly so.

kateandme · 13/03/2020 17:00

AryaStarkWolf i dont know if uk would follow this way of doing things.that is my fear.especially with dickhead boris leading things.

Dreamprincess · 13/03/2020 17:01

Boris has said people like me will die Hyberbole much!

I am very much in the at-risk group and accept that with any serious epidemic some people are more likely to die than others. In the 1918 it was babies, people aged 20 - 40, and those over 60. My grandfather was in the second group and died. My DF died of norovirus contracted in hospital while in for a totally unrelated matter. Shit happens.

Stating facts may be uncomfortable reading for some, but I would rather know that I am at risk of dying, rather than the truth be covered up. Now I know, I am taking all necessary precautions and will isolate myself at home as soon as we are advised to do so.

In the meantime, I know I can go out between 9 and 3pm and not see many children outside my family. Children apparently are at low risk of dying but are high risk carriers. Once schools breakup or are closed, I am sure many will be out and about and it will be impossible to keep the prescribed 2- 3 metres away from them.

I am full time carer for my grandchildren while their parents work, so I suppose I am being selfish asking for the schools to be kept open as long as possible. But at least following Boris' comments, I am under no illusion of the risks I may be running by continuing with the arrangement during the next few months.

OrangeSamphire · 13/03/2020 17:01

In Cornwall we've already had a family of second home owners fleeing London and bringing it down here.

Please for the love of common sense, stay put and don't spread it down here when the schools close. The infrastructure simply cannot cope.

liberoncolours · 13/03/2020 17:02

There is a link upthread about "you can save people or the economy but not both" - but it doesn't allow for the fact that the masses need the economy to be just about working, or they starve. The economy panning will affect poor people more than rich people, as poor people have no savings to act as buffet.

Though people may be right that bojo isn't thinking about saving the economy for the benefit of the masses, more about helping a tiny number of very rich people. Who knows.

The families from Italy and Spain (and now probably France) and London disappearing off to holiday homes could in fact have been largely stopped by the various governments. Maybe not as efficient as in China but better than it has been.

Shanghai,

I am starting to reluctantly agree with you. I think Western ‘democracies’ are not really that democratic. We are offered limited choice and very short term planning.

The contract between a government and society is to deliver wealth and health in exchange for power. In the last 20 years most t of the wealth has been delivered to the top 0.1% and now they are even failing on the health!

CallmeAngelina · 13/03/2020 17:12

Re: flying back to the USA from Germany: their friends are getting flights back via UK and Ireland. You could not make it up!

Trump has said that anyone whose journey originated in Europe, won't be allowed in. So, those who are intending to do that, and fly via a UK airport, haven't actually tested out whether it works yet.

HonestlyItsFine · 13/03/2020 17:13

I read that in some places, children off school were staying with Grandparents- and that the children, while they were not showing symptoms, presumably infected the grandparents.

I don't know how true that is, it's just something I read.

I really hope people don't go travelling around in the Easter holidays.

billysboy · 13/03/2020 17:13

Just listening to R2 with Sara Cox , lots of people phoning in on their way to various meetups with friends all over the country one in particular meeting a group of over 50 friends

Madness

SirVixofVixHall · 13/03/2020 17:25

Agree OrangeSamphire
I am in Wales, this is my big worry. Rural areas are the least equipped to deal with this, and have more elderly people.
Stop being so selfish people ! Don’t just assess your own risk of catching it, assess the risk of you taking it into a vulnerable community.

daisypond · 13/03/2020 17:25

I’m curious about how children who are meant to do schoolwork online are meant to do it without internet access? Lots won’t have it.

BackforGood · 13/03/2020 17:25

Totally get what you meant in your post @ShanghaiDiva
Says more about those posters that leapt on you, who didn't get that you were talking about the specifics to do with containing the virus and coping with people living in those circumstances.

CallmeAngelina · 13/03/2020 17:28

lots of people phoning in on their way to various meetups with friends all over the country one in particular meeting a group of over 50 friends

But, practically speaking, how is that any different from me, as a teacher, mingling at close quarters with children all day every day?

koshkatt · 13/03/2020 17:33

ShanghaiDiva did not make a fin stupid comment

Yes she did.

liberoncolours · 13/03/2020 17:36

Also, we are hearing from Italy - which is number 1 for healthcare according to WHO I think and who are being buried under the coronavirus crisis - is that they do not have anywhere near enough ventilators, that the key reason why people are dying is because they do not have anything like enough ventilators - or beds - so the governments in other countries should be placing orders for more ventilators and organising more beds in advance now for everywhere and putting in place plans for more staff and sufficient protection for staff.

tallah · 13/03/2020 17:36

@BirdandSparrow doesn't need to be a "your country is worse than mine" thread

daisypond · 13/03/2020 17:36

But, practically speaking, how is that any different from me, as a teacher, mingling at close quarters with children all day every day?
Because you presumably all live locally and aren’t travelling across the country.

Missillusioned · 13/03/2020 17:39

Thing is we talk about childcare for essential workers and assume that just means medical people. But we still need people to man the power stations, to deliver essentials , to work in supermarkets, food processing factories and petrol stations etc. That's a lot of people. Many households will have such a worker.

0hT00dles · 13/03/2020 17:41

I'm in ireland, and even heading into a bank holiday most people have cancelled their plans to go anywhere - my dd's School was off today until Wednesday anyway- but all trips are being cancelled.

We did visits with grandparents not close to us last weekend in anticipation of this.

We're housebound now. Did go for a walk today.

From what I hear, a lot of the teens are actually quite apprehensive about this. So they're sticking by the rules.

No one out around us today-except for people getting bits and pieces and going to and from work.

larrygrylls · 13/03/2020 17:43

Liberon,

I agree, it worries me that amongst all the talk of delaying and flattening the peak, there was no talk of how we are gearing up to deal with it

Are we building any new hospitals? Not as far as I can see. Maybe someone medical can tell me if we are converting more wards to properly equipped ICUs. Are we buying more ventilators and ECMO machines?

Surely if Boris wants us all to have a giant ‘chicken pox’ party, he should be telling us about how he is planning to deal with all the ‘chicken pox’ cases?!
Why would that be a secret?

Personally I give him a week tops to cave, or schools will start unilaterally closing.

LillianGish · 13/03/2020 17:44

Whether the schools are open or closed, if people showing symptoms do not self isolate then the disease is going to spread. Whether it’s people in close proximity in a football stadium or in close proximity watching the match in a pub, kids in close proximity at school or hanging at out together elsewhere - if someone is coughing and sneezing they are going to pass the virus on. Close the schools by all means, but don’t think that’s going to be a magic solution if people don’t use common sense.

FacingtheAbess · 13/03/2020 17:45

Why are all other people govs doing everything they can in the short term to slow this down. They must also know from their experts that this will will longer to go away?.
Yes they seem to be taking action to slow this peak.

We are fueling it, pouring petrol on it.

FacingtheAbess · 13/03/2020 17:46

Lillian unfortunately there is no pressure at all to self isolate, the amount of people coughing saying.. I don't have covid this week!
