Why are mass gatherings only being banned from next weekend?
Surely it's a simple as, call press conference:make announcement.
Why do they need a week to think about it?? I don't understand.

NEW: Trump declares Sunday a National Day of Prayer amid coronavirus crisis, tweeting: "No matter where you may be, I encourage you to turn towards prayer in an act of faith. Together, we will easily PREVAIL!"

Angryrant55 · 13/03/2020 23:06

@MurrayTheMonk
Seems like they wont do it till the compensation bill comes through- interested in money.

OhMargo · 13/03/2020 23:07

Over 60s genocide incoming imo.

And no one seems to care.

Honestly it is economy now, not society anymore.

Oakmaiden · 13/03/2020 23:08

*Remember schools will probably be allowed 200 or more in the hall with 2 staff for the whole day.

I can’t imagine many teachers putting up with that for more than a day-it would be carnage.*

I was about to say it would be OK as long as you weren't actually trying to teach anything, and treated it as a day long playtime/break. And then I remembered how the first 10 minutes of break is fine, and then they start fighting, and complaining...

MurrayTheMonk · 13/03/2020 23:08

Fuckers.
I didn't want to believe that it was all
About money, I've tried hard to find the logic in the 'science' they've spouted, but that really can be the only reason for how they've played this. I can't see another one really.

Oakmaiden · 13/03/2020 23:09

Terrifying that Italy is now only testing hospital cases - and still recording over 2000 new cases a day...

What a tragic waste.

boatyardblues · 13/03/2020 23:11

Anyone think the two year time limit on lower care standards for the elderly in the emergency measures will be a massive help to the government in masking the effects of Brexit & the proposed immigration rules, which will hit low paid care workers & nursing homes? Cunts! Also, how convenient that we won’t be able to gather & protest once the worse of this pandemic is over. I hope the opposition stirs itself to life and argues for stringent limits on & periodic review of these arrangements.

Angryrant55 · 13/03/2020 23:13

Cases have massively dropped in the areas which were lock downed three week ago. Hopefully tuesday week 14 days after total lockdown sees a drop in new cases.

I think in parts of Italy some home visit treatment might be tested but i know Lombardy is hospital only testing.

Random18 · 13/03/2020 23:13

It's not a genocide ffs. It's not going to be good in any country - yours included.

We can't just write off the economy. There is a balance to be had. Whether the UK has got the right balance remains to be seen - but we also have to ensure that those that lose jobs are oL long term. That the kids can be fed when they're parents aren't working etc.

I know it sounds bloody awful bit it's not genocide. He is not trying to kill the generation that elects him.

Srictlybakeoff · 13/03/2020 23:16

We need to somehow support children of workers in the emergency services , esp health care workers who may be forced to work in the most horrific circumstances. So one option may have to be larger numbers of children looked after by a few members of staff. Would be difficult but we all have to pull together.

LukeSkywalkingOnTheseHaters · 13/03/2020 23:16

I watched Channel 4 news and got really worried, maybe even an anxiety attack? Not sure as don't think I've ever had one before! But I went out this evening to 4 supermarkets and panic bought. Got about 2-3 weeks worth of basic food. It made me feel better even though I know its stupid thing to do..

teta · 13/03/2020 23:20

Frankly if we follow the same path as Italy and the rest of Europe plus with possibly the least ICU beds of all. With a government that's following some theoretical science model, loads of us will be dieing at home. We will be in a worse state then Wuhan. I could understand the computer modeler in channel 4 tearing his hair out.
Maybe only 1% will die with efficient medical treatment in an Icu unit. But 15-20% of patients will need skilled medical care, which they won't be getting. So we will have a much higher death rate. It's not just the elderly this virus will be killing. It will be healthcare workers due to the lack of personal protection, younger individuals and many people with young families.
The UK is sleep walking into disaster.

jmcg2015 · 13/03/2020 23:21

@Exochord you are making the assumption that stockpiling is effective and the best course of action. Which plainly it is not. Sadly your viewpoint is common, and damaging. As I said though, noone is trying to change the minds of those doing it, those doing it aren't doing it based on anything but selfishness. I thought as a country we were better than that, the "as long as I'm alright jack" mentality really is out in force. Sad days

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 13/03/2020 23:21

Italy is testing people with symptoms. That's more than just hospital cases.

BarcelonaFreddie · 13/03/2020 23:25

What was the Channel 4 programme called?
Would like to watch it on catch up. Thanks.

MurrayTheMonk · 13/03/2020 23:26

I think more elderly people will
Die from lack of care under the relaxed standards than will die from the virus.
Care is on a knife edge anyway. In Domicilliary Care it's far from
Uncommon for calls to be missed, meds to be fucked up, people to fall, lie on their floor in agony and only be found at their next visit 24 hours later.....It's only by sheer luck and the good Will of an underpaid but largely dedicated workforce that more vulnerable people don't die every single bloody week.
This situation has just further exposed how fucked it all is.
And yet still, if and when it's all over, it will go back to being ignored and under funded.
I've been a care manager for 15 years and worked in care for 20, and I've seen it go from bad to worse to untenable.
Add a global pandemic in to the mix and it's very quickly an unmitigated disaster.

C4 prog was “Coronavirus: Are We Doing Enough? A C4 News Special”.

VivaLeBeaver · 13/03/2020 23:30

I work at a university and so far we’re not moving to online lectures. Which our dept could easily do. Other universities are doing it. I feel that my life is being gambled with by my employer and I’m not happy.

Also meant to be facilitating a uni open day next weekend. I’m not doing it now. As far as I’m concerned that’s a mass gathering and inc in the banned category.

Oakmaiden · 13/03/2020 23:33

@BookMeOnTheSudExpress

That is a relief

Angryrant55 · 13/03/2020 23:34

I'm glad the people i loved who were in care homes are gone now and don't have to face dying in this way on top of the horrible declines they faced.

Angryrant55 · 13/03/2020 23:35

In Italy the only party to rise in the polls this week is the ultra far right pro musolini party.

colouringinpro · 13/03/2020 23:37
Sad
BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 13/03/2020 23:40

No, the only party to go up in the polls was Renzi's centrist party.
Not sure what party Angry is referring to, but Salvini',s Lega fell in popularity this week.

OhMargo · 13/03/2020 23:43

Random 18,

It is despicable what they are doing. It is an experiment.

Anyway, lots of other countries around Europe are shutting down now and I doubt the economy or business is their concern right now.

Shoo.
