Spain is stepping up their measures, closing all pubs/restaurants/shops except for supermarkets and pharmacies.
Switzerland and France have closed schools
UK is doing nothing.

Look, leave aside the debate over differing scientific opinions about social distancing. Even if Boris and his team's idea of herd immunity and delaying distancing is 100% correct - at the very least they should be using this time to ramp up preparations in the NHS for the coming tidal wave. China built 2 new hospitals. Italy is making 5 ventilator machines a day. Other European countries have opened new wards, made contingency plans to change elective wards into makeshift ICUs etc.

I work for the NHS. We have had literally nothing. We don't even have enough hand gel. Staff in the general hospital have been given one fit mask. Not one per shift, one in total. They are just sleepwalking us into a crisis and don't seem to care at all.

Exochord · 13/03/2020 21:45

when this passes, will you be happy that your actions have disadvantaged and endangered the lives of others?
If you ask people to choose between protecting their family or considering the welfare of strangers, pretty much everyone will choose their family.

BigChocFrenzy · 13/03/2020 21:48

"if you're then on holiday so your kids misses them tough luck"

Your kids future is more important than a holiday - if anybody is taking any this summer - so cancel the holiday and stay home
It won't cost any more

FacingtheAbess · 13/03/2020 21:48

Mrssoho

Df last admittance to hospital before he died, in March 2 years ago... He was waiting in an ambulance, outside for 6 hours.

Then waiting after a and e. That was without covid

That's normal illness time. My own dd was ill with step throat b, 4 hours call back 111. Took 8 hours from first 111 call to get her seen, then when we got antibiotics, she puked. I had to go through the whole question system again, wait again for gp to call me another 6 hours to get different antibiotics!!...

That's without covid. Before tending to df in hospital I'd had a week sleeping downstairs with dd very sick!.
This is without covid... It's going to be horrific!!

TIMES: Police get powers to detain virus victims

Also large gatherings to be banned from next weekend.

FacingtheAbess · 13/03/2020 21:50

Ie March 2 years ago.

Lots of childhood illness going round and the elderly anyway. The system couldn't cope and having two ill at once was awful

Angryrant55 · 13/03/2020 21:51

@BigChocFrenzy
If you cancel you lose the money through - that can be a lot of money lost.

FacingtheAbess · 13/03/2020 21:51

TELEGRAPH: Mass gatherings to be banned

FacingtheAbess · 13/03/2020 21:53

Angry...

Holidays are a privilege...

Money is the least of our worries right now.

We need something to put pressure on supermarkets to reserve food and loo roll for the elderly!!

The advice Chris Whitty and Patrick Vallance are giving the Government may be catastrophically wrong - and we all have to hope that it’s not. But are people really suggesting that they’re sacrificing their professional reputations so Boris Johnson can cull old people?

ofwarren · 13/03/2020 21:56

Mass gathering where @angryrant55?
Is this off the guardian live feed?

I'm a dispensing optician I'm a very busy opticians we see about 300-400 people per day for various things some very up close and touching faces closely. We have been offered no advice by the well know company and have been told we are not allowed to wear gloves etc I'm really worried about catching it and passing it on to other at risk family members. I don't know what to do. I have to go to work but is there something I should be telling them they need to be doing like letting us wear gloves, less up close and personal, issues with money handling? I feel like we are bound to catch it as we see so many people

stella1know · 13/03/2020 22:02

‘Keep calm and wash your hands till we all get herd immunity’ reminds me very sadly of ‘Lions led by donkeys’ and soldiers having to walk slowly to the german side, not allowed run or panic or question. They got knocked down in minutes, millions of them. Sorry for the analogy but it is the same thing.
I do like donkeys generally and think the phrase should have been Lions led by crocodiles or something.

Joyfulljenny · 13/03/2020 22:03

I just don’t understand why we are not shutting down now . We are 14 days behind Italy why are we not taking extreme measures before it gets to critical point?

I think people are walking round in la la land tbh. My facebook feeds is full of ‘it’s just like flu- what’s the fuss Confused

yoloPenguinsEatfish · 13/03/2020 22:06

whereareyousleep I was just thinking about opticians today as I need to get a spare pair of glasses... I wont be going for a while. I think your employers have a duty of care to you, can you getin touch with HR?

MangePasTesOnglesVilain · 13/03/2020 22:12

Who saw the channel 4 special programme tonight?

Strong stuff.

The mathematical modeler from the states looked haunted and despairing that the UK guy was not agreeing with his prediction that we need to do some serious social distancing now.

Definitely worth a watch but maybe not before bed.

ofwarren · 13/03/2020 22:12

@whereareyousleep
I was thinking about opticians yesterday. They work just as close to the face as a dentist, yet don't (can't) wear masks.
Dreadful

As a society we need to shed the ignorant selfish ways of our pre Coronavirus lives. We have to come together and actually help one another right now.

Today, Right Now, all that matters is that we start putting in place precautions and actions that will keep us and our families safe and remember to smile at the lone shoppers in the supermarkets. A lot of scared people are facing the prospect of riding this out alone.

Life as we knew it is paused.

MigginsMrs · 13/03/2020 22:14

I agree Wehttahm but where there are people who only care about stockpiling food and toilet roll, not giving a fuck they are leaving none for those who can’t afford to, I wonder when we will get there.

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 13/03/2020 22:14

I'm a teacher in Italy and we are teaching regularly just online. (DD currently revising for the test she has tomorrow) We have to keep to our timetable, the kids have to "attend" , work is set and marked. (And marking essays online is a pita and each one takes loads longer than a paper copy would)
Then we have to gather our documents and go and queue for entry to the food shops and keep disinfecting our surfaces and clothes.
So yeah, being a teacher at home right now is just swell.
