I work in a school and we don’t know what’s going on re school closures. Many of the senior leadership believe that we will be closed from 23rd March.

We were v short of teachers today due to staff self isolating with coughs/temps and our Head is worried about how we will be able to afford supply teachers.

The number of staff self isolating is only going to increase.

CharlieTangoBanana · 13/03/2020 20:26

Anyone else watching C4? I can't believe what I've just seen and heard "UK cases are only doubling every two and a half days because we're contact tracing at the moment" WTF so it only matters if you count them, what a fucking twat

FacingtheAbess · 13/03/2020 20:29

Trump medical man said the peak could be months without measures.

Or weeks with measures.
He didn't spout medical models he said this is unprecedented and we don't know.

MrsBeeluga · 13/03/2020 20:30

@MmeAlice don't know how to pm, so doing this in Danish, sorry to other posters.

Trump says he is most likely going to be tested - ‘we’re working on a schedule’. So there’s a chance. Why is he surrounded by all these people and shaking hands and sharing a microphone with them.

And shaking hands with his lackeys too.

Trump presser was all about the economy and big biz. Didn't all those companies like Target and Walmart etc. have a say on the podium? and one of them said those being tested are "consumers".

I am opening the vino now and self isolating. Cheers.

I mentioned on Wednesday's thread that our LA were giving hints that schools would be closing from this Wednesday. I'm in a NW London borough. it does seem at odds with the government's plan so who knows.

GiveMeAllTheGin8 · 13/03/2020 20:39

I’m really shocked the schools have not closed in the uk, it must be extremely frustrating. Can you do as mentioned up thread and say your child is self isolating due to cough?
Am in Ireland and from tomorrow all playgrounds will be closed until further notice. It is encouraged that children stay within the family home - a walk outside keeping a two meter distance between other people is recommended.
Visits to grandparents and the vulnerable also not encouraged.
Parties and play dates are not encouraged . It has been said that the school closures are not to be treated as holidays .
I agree with it all. Tough keeping the kids entertained but hopefully worth it in the long run.
I hope we all get through this in one piece

Bessica1970 · 13/03/2020 20:39

Just found ‘Coronavirus close the schools UK’ Facebook group and applied to join
They’re going to take down the Boris images (keeping it apolitical will help)

Just trying to help them‘create an event’ - does anyone know how to do this?

MigginsMrs · 13/03/2020 20:40

I've got a months worth of food in but just tried to do a top up and no delivery for a week!

Why are you doing a top up shop for home delivery if you have a month’s worth of food in? You’re adding to the panic buying and people not being able to get delivery slots.

Bumblesbumbles · 13/03/2020 20:40

Has anyone else decided to lockdown? I want to avoid the peak period when there won’t be enough beds.

Exochord · 13/03/2020 20:41

I want to go and live in Poland! Schools, bars, restaurants and gatherings of over 50 people have bern banned. Meanwhile we get told that loved ones will die before their time but we should just keep washing our hands.

I’m trying to self isolate but finding it very difficult. Events I attend regularly are not cancelled and I risk losing my spot if I just stop attending. People are pooh poohing my concerns and gossiping about my stupidity in wanting to cancel. Because if we needed to cancel then the government would have told us to!

Perhaps you should be trying to catch it now before it gets too busy? I’m serious - it seems inevitable and I’ve actually thought about when would be safest to catch it.

Really interesting piece about how much on a limb, epidemiologically speaking, the government is with its response to coronavirus. I’ll leave it to the scientists to decide how risky it is in public health terms. But it sure as hell feels like a massive political risk.

Numbersarefun · 13/03/2020 20:44

yolo part of Geneva airport is in France so shouldn’t be a problem.

UEA and Uni of Southampton have stopped teaching from today.

Bumblesbumbles · 13/03/2020 20:45

@Exochord- I agree! I’ve thought of that too. It’s either now or after the peak. But I feel the peak is getting a bit close for comfort

AvocadoOwl · 13/03/2020 20:46

Catch it today and you likely won't need an ICU bed for 3 weeks. We'll be at Italy levels by then.

Based on Italy I’m guessing it’s six weeks away. Though I believe the government is saying it’s 10-14 weeks away?

1happyhippie · 13/03/2020 20:49

I thought the government said we are 4 weeks behind Italy?

VivaLeBeaver · 13/03/2020 20:49

Dh is annoying me by still saying how it’s like a bad cold, etc.

I’ve told him over 200 people a day dying in Italy and he just shrugs and says “how many people die a day in Italy anyway” and that most of them would have died anyway.

Exochord · 13/03/2020 20:50

Italy hasn’t reached their peak yet.

CharlieTangoBanana · 13/03/2020 20:50

We are two weeks behind Italy

MyHipsDontLieUnfortunately · 13/03/2020 20:51

I wonder if there will be a reduction in people willing to work in the public sector / service industry after this. I feel fucked off hearing about companies sending their staff home while teachers are left to tough it out. I've previously considered retraining as a HCP, but fuck no. Never after this. As for retail - not a chance. It makes you realise who society can't function without, doesn't it? People in manufacturing too, but I guess at least they're not public facing.
