@Horehound

Yes, it is right that SARS and Mers have higher fatality rates.

They are nothing like so contagious, though, and spread very slowly. Easy(ish) to contain.

Which makes them less of a threat on a society wide scale.

QueenofmyPrinces · 13/03/2020 20:09

Im going to cancel my son going but if her child goes and is carrying the virus and transfers it to the other children who go to the same school as my son (teachers son doesn’t go to same school) then he will catch it anyway. Am I over thinking it?*

I’m trying my hardest to not get bogged down with complicated thoughts in these situations.

It’s my sons 6th birthday party tomorrow with 40 children coming.

Someone I know was aghast that I was letting it go ahead but my train of thought is that he’s with these children 6 hours a day, five days a week, and has been since the start of the outbreak and will continue to be so in the upcoming weeks so how is the party any different?

My 85 year old Aunt is booked on one in April. She wants to cancel but the friend she is going with - her age with various health conditions - is more concerned about losing the money.

Bessica1970 · 13/03/2020 20:10

SARS and MERS are more severe in that they kill a higher percentage of people who catch it - BUT they didn’t spread as quickly because the symptoms were obvious quickly, so cases were isolated fairly quickly too. Covid is more dangerous overall (will kill more people) because it spreads quickly and easily.

Notpanickingjustyet · 13/03/2020 20:12

Long time lurker....

It appears we are governed by a prime minister who will quite happily let this sweep through England and kill a few people along the way.

Not a chance schools will close (school teacher). Seems like we will carry on as we are.

Thank you for posting that information. I take Ramipril too, and was really very worried when I saw that item earlier. I'll sleep now tonight!

GuessWhoBoo · 13/03/2020 20:12

will suspend all face-to-face lectures and seminars until the end of term because of coronavirus.

The university, which has two campuses in the city, will cancel all face-to-face learning from Monday, March 23 until the end of the semester on Friday, May 1.

This is in Wales, are we to assume schools will follow?

Trump was just asked why Uk not part of travel ban. “We may be adding them”

Trump says he might now have to include the UK in the travel ban after the increase in cases in past 24 hours.

It just read like it killed 1500 people but we're at over 5k now.

Beebityboo · 13/03/2020 20:14

I have heard everything from "school closures are imminent" to "no way they will close" just wish I had some idea so I know how to act going forwards.

Bessica1970 · 13/03/2020 20:14

“This speculation about the safety of ACE-i or ARB treatment in relation to COVID-19 does not have a sound scientific basis or evidence to support it.”

The DM printing a health story with no sound scientific evidence? Well I never! 😂

MrsBeeluga · 13/03/2020 20:14

@MmeAlice we are very impressed by her, too. She has really stepped into character, but what a shit situation for her to be in the lead.
Let's hope they can control the situation hospital-wise, I'm not that confident.

Horehound · 13/03/2020 20:14

Yeh I'm watching. Seems sensible enough

clamig · 13/03/2020 20:15

@ajandjjmum

1-2 million deaths likely In the U.S.
21 million may need hospitalisation.

In a country with only 1 million beds.

Herd immunity: will the UK's coronavirus strategy work?

Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the WHO director general, said: “The idea that countries should shift from containment to mitigation is wrong and dangerous.”

Conclusion? It’s a gamble with our lives

I'm not in UK but in one of the countries that has taken schools out, limited gatherings, travel and so on.

Looking on from afar, and apologies first.... seems to me that many in UK are very supine and obedient.

I like the idea of a co ordinated effort to take kids out of school for a week with "symptoms" that you were told would necessitate that.

And the same the week after and so on.

But I reckon schools will close soon anyway.

Best of luck, you need to fight back against this obvious genocide of the vulnerable for the sake of the stock market, big business, and the economy.

People are needed to run the economy. Honestly I am so mad at the UK, but people seem to be accepting of it overall.

Bessica1970 · 13/03/2020 20:23

”Germany has seen 3,062 cases and five deaths. There have been 798 confirmed infections in the UK and 11 deaths.”
This statistic shows that we are in a far worse position than Germany even though we have fewer ‘confirmed infections’. Our death to cases ratio is much worse, implying a huge number of unconfirmed cases ☹️
