Coronavirus: Experts cast doubt on UK plan for ‘herd immunity

‘We really don’t know whether there will be herd immunity or not,’ says head of virology at National Institute for Biological Standards and Control

@SirVixofVixHall

I don’t think it’s a best case scenario. It’s the stats we see when a hospital system begins to be overwhelmed. And we don’t know how many asymptomatic cases are out there, so we only symptomatic CFR numbers.

But China’s symptomatic CFR was 3.5% and this is the number WHO use. Italy are tracking slightly above it, likely because they haven’t been able to mobilise the same resources (yet).

@DrBlackbird Spironolactone is a diuretic but I can't say what would be a good alternative to an ACE for you. It depends on variables you bring to the picture as a patient and on medical history etc.

Four children from our Year 11 cohort were sent home at varying stages today after starting with coughs and high temps. All were fine at registration this morning.

mondaynoon · 13/03/2020 17:49

I understand that we are following the science but surely WHO are also following the science. Are the scientists across the world all wrong and only ours are right?

Janemarpling · 13/03/2020 17:49

On Sky news they said our Scientists don't think kids spread it but Macron's Scientists do. He didn't have a conclusion as there wasn't enough data.

Guess we should just risk it them eh Boris?

Well, it's certainly hit Italy what Dr Christian Jesson has said about the Italians fancying a long siesta and so exaggerating everything.
I don't think he'd better visit any time soon, with or without a mask.
Ignorant twat.

middleager · 13/03/2020 17:50

God Trixy that's worrying.

I feel so powerless right now when govt are gambling with our lives.

It feels like use my child (asthmatic) as Guinea Pig herd immunity to protect my parents.

Here is a snapshot of the WHO press conference. Is anyone really saying Boris has it right now?

Jessen is a misogynist who hates women. Nothing he says surprises me anymore.

middleager · 13/03/2020 17:52

Obvs a misogynist hates women - ignore me. Sleep deprived...

JellyFishSquish · 13/03/2020 17:52

Flaxmeadow I asked this too!

Choux · 13/03/2020 17:53

Per Worldometers the 250 deaths reported in Italy today is higher than China reported in any day at its' peak. 😱

For the poster looking for a chink of light. Today's new cases in Italy of 2,547 were 104 lower than yesterday's new cases of 2,651.

QueenofmyPrinces · 13/03/2020 17:54

eeyore - the WHO may have well just come out and said that the UK PM is behaving very very dangerously.

I can’t believe BJ isn’t doing anything!!

I hope all the Tory Supporters are finally seeing him and his party for what they really stand for. It certainly isn’t the best interest of the people.

SistemaAddict · 13/03/2020 17:54

@shouldhavebeenme2014 when I was doing my post grad nursing we were taught that any paracetamol or ibuprofen should be taken into account when monitoring fever. Keep a note of the temperature over the next 12 hours perhaps to get an idea of the pattern. Take it before giving calpol and then an hour after to see if there's a difference. As the calpol wears off you are likely to see the temperature go up.

stoptherideiwanttogetoff · 13/03/2020 17:54

Just seen the Italy figures 😱

defthand · 13/03/2020 17:55

@Choux — signs the social distancing in Italy is already working? I hope so.

Are you watching Boris? This virus is containable.

We need to at least try and stop people travelling. Travel is a huge driver for the spread of this, in the UK as well as abroad.

I checked the stats. China's highest ever daily death toll was 150. Italy has exceeded this for the last 4 days with 168, 196, 189 and now 250.
