Remember the 208 increase is with practically no testing any more even of NHS staff exposed to coronavirus cases. They will only test us if we are hospital inpatients ourselves

Not yet, remember the 208 announced today were actually tested a couple of days ago, before the changes were made. So we won't be seeing that change quite yet. The reduction in testing was only announced last night.

That said, I know of someone who had a PPE failure with a confirmed covid 19 case at the start of the week, and they have been told to self isolate and refused testing unless symptoms present - that was decided yesterday morning. So for sure, minimal testing has been happening anyway!

SirVixofVixHall · 13/03/2020 18:01

This virus is containable, I agree, and if the government had been honest about death rates from the start, and presented this as the biggest risk to life since the war, and the worst health crisis since 1918, then I think fewer people would have been rolling eyes, and saying it is just a flu that might kill a few very old people, like any flu, and more people would have been willing to support each other, socially distance, not travel about, and sit it out.
As it stands we might all lose someone we love, or be the one lost.

SistemaAddict · 13/03/2020 18:02

At this rate we are going to be the last country to act responsibly. The WHO need to put any politics aside and call out our government. Now is not the time to worry about offending anybody.

MarshaBradyo · 13/03/2020 18:03

If they are thinking of the U.K. when they say this stuff it’s not much help to us as it’s easily ignored by govt.

defthand · 13/03/2020 18:04

@SirVixofVixHall

Agreed. Playing it down has been extremely unhelpful.

Eeyoresstickhouse · 13/03/2020 18:06

WHO will never come and say it is the UK. They are politically neutral and would just not say it.

Boris is a stubborn arse and will not back down I fear. Of course he and his family will probably be guaranteed the best care so he gives zero fucks. It's the people in the thick of it that will lose their lives because of his policy.

GuessWhoBoo · 13/03/2020 18:07

Why are we being told that they expect around 20,000 people in Wales to die from this? Am I missing something? There wasn't that many deaths in China.

And now the diplomatic fallout starts....

From the Guardian:

The US State Department has summoned the Chinese ambassador over a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson’s comments about claims that the US military was responsible for bringing the new coronavirus to the province of Wuhan at the start of the outbreak.

That’s just breaking now on Reuters.

@dwp

I called the DWP to cancel the appointment because I have lymphoma. She asked why I hadn't mentioned lymphoma before, and I answered that it hadn't been an issue before. She said that I need to bring in proof. I'll drop it off, but I'm not meeting with them as I got a cold last time.

If you DWP insist you go in, I would go in and cough and sneeze all over them. If they can't follow their own government guidelines then screw them.

Angryrant55 · 13/03/2020 18:10

I am fuming at the Evening Standard front page saying how Lockdown might kill more people.

SirVixofVixHall · 13/03/2020 18:10

Look at how many people on threads are still talking about going on holiday.....i know society is more selfish than it used to be, but i think many of those people haven’t grasped the basic fact that movement spreads the virus. Staying put as much as possible and socially distancing is the only socially responsible thing to do.
It is as though people think they are somehow immune to this, and they won’t spread it.

SirVixofVixHall · 13/03/2020 18:11

20,000 people in Wales ?

Angryrant55 · 13/03/2020 18:12

Let's face it the goverment policy is a chicken Pox party policy

Michelleoftheresistance · 13/03/2020 18:13

To be fair, they're hearing the government standing up in the HoC saying that meeting up with people and moving around and carrying on as normal won't spread it.

Unless they're taking the time to read around and listen to the WHO and read the papers, they'll believe their govt are the experts on this and will tell them when to stop doing stuff.

Eeyoresstickhouse · 13/03/2020 18:13

Why are no news outlets reporting that #BorisOut has been trending all day? People are concerned. People want action.

GuessWhoBoo · 13/03/2020 18:13

That's what they've just said on the news.

TheElementsOfMedical · 13/03/2020 18:13

This Twitter thread discussing the flaws in the UK government's COVID strategy has a lot of points that I agree with (not all, but most).

Poll taken before Boris 'many will die'.

GuessWhoBoo · 13/03/2020 18:18

@SirVixofVixHall

Health Minister Vaughan Gething said he has taken "decisive action" to "provide care and support to the most vulnerable people in our communities, whilst also making sure organisations and professionals are supported."

During a press conference in Cardiff, the Health Minister said a "worst case scenario" would see around 25,000 deaths in Wales.

An average flu season would see 8-10,000, he said.

SirVixofVixHall · 13/03/2020 18:19

GuessWhoBoo was that the Welsh news ? Will have to watch later as my dc are here.
