There are no confirmed cases in Norfolk but there may be untested cases.

Michelleoftheresistance · 13/03/2020 16:47

If the WHO strongly disagree with the UK’s plan-is it likely they will be able to do something about it?

Today and at least once previously this week they've been asked to name and shame. They're being professional about it, they're obviously trying to keep open diplomatic relations. They're used to going to help and bail out countries in mid crisis with epidemics, but this is a pandemic, it's world wide. If it goes tits up here, we're going to be bloody lucky if any other country is in a position to come and help the way China is currently doing with Italy.

Saucery · 13/03/2020 16:47

Drama, like I said upthread, why would they do that? It’s not like all their families are just going to shrug and say it’s ok.
Mind you, incompetence and bluster is going to have the same effect. I just don’t think it’s a deliberate policy.

1happyhippie · 13/03/2020 16:48

I’m not sure WHO can do anything to force the uk government. They can only advise and show what works best and what doesn’t.
They said on an earlier press conference, that each country is responsible for their actions.
They are giving the very best advice and hoping countries listen.
Most appear to be.

maudspellbody · 13/03/2020 16:49

This is winding me up now.

My job involves visiting families, schools and hospitals and having close contact with the children I visit.

A normal day would see me visit two schools and two family homes.

It is a City Council position.

We have asked whether this is wise and have been told 'just make sure you're washing your hands'. We asked whether we would be provided with hand sanitiser to be told that there is none, but they will look at getting us some.

Some schools are closing to visitors (which is a pretty sensible measure given that they have to make some changes, but aren't being allowed to close), but we have had no advice except to wash our hands. Because it's a local authority, they will be taking direction from the Government.

Not only am I at great risk of picking it up and bringing it home, but my team and I will be like virus delivery services transferring between schools and homes. Utterly senseless.

We need proper guidance. It shouldn't be left to individual services and businesses to make decisions that will cost them financially. They need to be told what to do and reassured that they will be supported to do so.

This is a nightmare.

SunshineAvenue · 13/03/2020 16:50

Can I ask a silly question about UK testing? If we are not routinely testing does that mean that confirmed cases (and therefore tested) are very serious and is that figure now at 4,000 or have I misunderstood?

It's me with the DD in the French ski resort. She will be fucked if Switz closes borders (which seems likely) as nearest airport is Geneva. Not quite sure how she'd get to another one, perhaps Grenoble. Need to google.

In positive news, DD2 has permission to wfh from now on, situation to be reviewed in a couple of weeks. DH immunosuppressed post chemo, so that is really good (that she can wfh I mean).

GinandGingerBeer · 13/03/2020 16:52

There is absolutely NO EVIDENCE that BP meds increase risk that sticks even states it bits daily mail bollocks. Read to the end.

Sipperskipper · 13/03/2020 16:53

Someone upthread mentioned drafting in nurses to ICU & the impact it would have on other areas (which I agree with) - in reality it isn’t even possible to draft nurses from other areas into ICU (unless they have prior experience) as it is so, so highly specialised. I’ve been a nurse in an acute trust for over 10 years, from acute gastro nursing to oncology, and would not have the first idea how to manage someone on a ventilator. I might be able to do some other bits, but the core nursing work in ICU? Completely unsafe. It would take significant training to get me to a decent, safe level. I have a masters degree and am a non-medical prescriber - very experienced in my own field, but with no ICU background I would be next to useless.

VivaLeBeaver · 13/03/2020 16:57

yolo there would always be Chambery airport.

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 13/03/2020 16:58

Didn’t the leading scientists advise the numbers infected already in the UK were already at 5-10k?

IrisAtwood · 13/03/2020 17:00

@Sipperskipper I was left with two ventilated patients 12 weeks into my nurse training (I was the last cohort to complete the old RGN training).

Based on the experiences reported in Italy I am pretty sure they’d stick you in front of the thing and ask you to do the basics - keep the fluids going, regular suction, checking that its still working.

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 13/03/2020 17:00

Not K Hmm 5-10 thousand presumed infected

BackInTime · 13/03/2020 17:00

I suspect Cummings the maverick adviser is shaping most of the decisions as usual. He likes to do things differently, thinks he knows best and likes weirdos and misfits with alternative views. I really hope Boris sees sense soon.

JellyFishSquish · 13/03/2020 17:00

Sorry, can't keep up with thread, but have been following the Johns Hopkins map daily, and today:

www.arcgis.com/apps/opsdashboard/index.html#/bda7594740fd40299423467b48e9ecf6

UK stats not on here anymore?

IrisAtwood · 13/03/2020 17:02

I think that the NHS will quickly abandon current practice of 1 to 1 and ICU trained staff.

HCPs will get a crash course of a couple of hours and off they go as its better than nothing.

Piggywaspushed · 13/03/2020 17:04

I do think teachers are getting increasingly uneasy about all of this, with everything else being suspended and cancelled around us.

One of DH's colleagues was at Addenbrooke's today and the nurses and doctors there were actually furious that the government have not closed down schools.

ajandjjmum · 13/03/2020 17:05

GinandGingerBeer
I hope you're right. I have to say that I have been panicking this afternoon, since I read about this.

yoloPenguinsEatfish
Doesn't Geneva airport have an entrance in both Switzerland and France - or am I way out of date!

MarshaBradyo · 13/03/2020 17:06

I swing into feeling very tense about it all.

anonacfr · 13/03/2020 17:06

Any French speakers who watch Le Quotidien?
They had as a guest an ER doctor who works with the SAMU (chairman of their trade union)
He casually announced that France were about 3 weeks away from their peak and they were anticipating about 15 million people with the virus.
They were looking a pit pale in the studio...

Interestingly they are preparing for the onslaught by planning on using private hospital for convalescent patients and treating the serious cases in state hospitals.
They are also cancelling all non-essential surgeries or routine appointments.

Sipperskipper · 13/03/2020 17:07

@IrisAtwood that’s absolutely mental!

Yes, I suspect that would be the case. Very, very worrying. We cover nothing about ventilation even in the 3 year nurse training - I never had an ICU placement either. I could only really guess what a ventilator looks like....

MarshaBradyo · 13/03/2020 17:08

15m 😳

Without a Wuhan style lock down perhaps everyone gets a peak like this (although flattened one hopes)

middleager · 13/03/2020 17:10

My y9 is due to have his MMR booster at the end of next week.
I can't see that happening.
I wonder if other immunisations will go amiss and how if this could impact Measles etc in younger age groups?

Maighdeann · 13/03/2020 17:11
