@Hellohello2020

Oh no. That’s terrible, and out of sync with other countries. It’s going to spread fast within hospitals like that.

BigChocFrenzy · 13/03/2020 14:33

Italy seems an outlier with a more severe outbreak than other comparable countries, for several reasons discussed elsewhere

  • which includes their govt dithering too long

Maybe better to compare with France, Spain or Germany

middleager · 13/03/2020 14:34

That stinks Hello sorry to hear.

fedup21 · 13/03/2020 14:35

‘UK virus measures will have biggest impact‘

This is a really misleading BBC news app headline.

It’s suggesting that the uk measures are going to be better than the rest of the world

youkiddingme · 13/03/2020 14:35

Also, what is the point of subjecting the UK to a mass experiment, whilst doing so little testing there is no real data to compare the result to that of other countries that appear to have a more robust response?

Feelingsolost1 · 13/03/2020 14:36

Coronavirus (COVID-19) was first identified in December 2019.

The first case of Coronavirus (COVID-19) in Scotland was confirmed in March 2020.

Scottish test numbers
A total of 3,315 Scottish tests have concluded. Of these:

3,229 tests were confirmed negative
85 tests were positive

Feelingsolost1 · 13/03/2020 14:37

25 more in Scotland

Forgone90 · 13/03/2020 14:37

@BigChocFrenzy but if its widely accepted that it has spread everywhere it will not make a difference especially as now the advice it to just stay at home... I can imagine the numbers are only important for modelling etc now

We are one big "chicken pox party" experiment.
I'm a secondary teacher stuck in a classroom with 5 different lots of 30+ students every day for an hour at a time.
I personally think the government is recklessly endangering staff such as myself. Secondary school pupils don't need childcare and we are exposed to about 300 students for hours every week.

RedLentilYellowLentil · 13/03/2020 14:40

No, that's not correct @Liveinside. ARBs act on the angiotensin receptors, not the ACE receptors.

But no one should be taking advice from either of us. They should talk to their GP.

HasaDigaEebowai · 13/03/2020 14:42

@Hannsmum where did you read that. very sad if its true

ShanghaiDiva · 13/03/2020 14:45

@BigChocFrenzy
Did they dither? I thought they stopped flights arriving from China back in Feb?
I didn’t really follow what was happening in Italy as my focus was on China and measures affecting us returning home.

TheElementsOfMedical · 13/03/2020 14:46

Another reason for testing perhaps -

Say that 80% of cases are indeed so mild that the infected hardly know they've had it (I'm doubtful of this figure, but this is one of the reassuring things we're being told).

And say that "herd immunity" is indeed a thing (which I believe it is), in other words each person who has had COVID-19 and recovers is now immune and can't be reinfected nor spread the disease.

That person could usefully and safely return to society, doing their job and helping to keep things running, whilst being a helpful human firebreak.

If they've had it so mild that "they don't know they've had it" or simply experienced generic symptoms, without widespread testing how would that person that they're safe to return to normal life, confident that any further sniffles they develop are not COVID?

BigChocFrenzy · 13/03/2020 14:49

@ShanghaiDiva Yes, they took too long to implement measures once it was established the virus was there
They always seemed to be running behind what they should have done

They needed to be on the ball, because with the early cases being in homes for the elderly where they expect pneumonia cases anyway, there were a lot of CV cases before anyone realised

Saz12 · 13/03/2020 14:52

Elements-My understanding is that they are working on a test for antibodies: if you have anti-CV antibodies then you should be “safe” from getting it and passing it on.
And that this antibody test is likely to be (relatively!) quick to produce.

"if its widely accepted that it has spread everywhere it will not make a difference especially as now the advice it to just stay at home"

forgone90 but it's sidely spread in other coutries with higher total cases and they are still testing

Again, the problem is that the UK strategy is differnt to most other comparable countries and the WHO

It might be that it is the UK experts who are right and everyone else is wrong
but it's a big gamble

I hope Whitty & co have asked their modellers to recheck and compare to what other coutries are doing
In a pandemic, I expect everyone shares data & models

.... oh hang on, I forgot Trump has classified everything they are doing on CV in the USA

  • probably to hide how little

And North Korea are keeping silent too
(except to say a while ago that they shot 1 party official and sent another to labour camp, both for breaking quarantine)

So probably almost everyone would share models if asked

ShanghaiDiva · 13/03/2020 14:57

Big choc
Thanks for the info.
