To be amazed at how many people are making excuses

Looking through these threads I'm feeling pretty horrified at the amount of people that either dont seem to be able to understand what self isolate actually means or are already making excuses as to why it can't possibly apply to them ?!?
Have read so many.. oh I'm not going to self isolate, I'm pretty sure it's just a cold. Can I still go for a walk. I need to go out for a run or else I'd go crazy, how am i going to walk the dog, I'd only pop to the shop really quickly

No wonder the schools aren't shutting, and we are not banning gatherings. I really can't understand how people are either not getting this or feel happy to just think sod the risk

@StarUtopia Please go back and read my OP. And my updates.... especially where I point out over and over again that I am talking about people who can and are choosing to self isolate, as they have a cough but are still choosing to go to the park, pop to the shops. These are the people that will put the most strain on people that have little choice but to go out and work as even if they are not spreading Corona they are spreading colds which are pushing others into having to self isolate which can be devastating financially ,especially as there may be no need for them to do it.

And No, I'm clearly not 'one of those people who can afford to stay home' as you so sarcastically put. I'm a single parent, who works in the school transport sector and am also a carer for an elderly mother with COPD. It's looking likely that my company will have to cut back on staff. I've pulled myself up from the bones of my arse after my marriage broke down and being made homeless with a toddler, going through the temporary accommodation process, I'm more secure now , but I'm still the one with the whole earning and care responsibility for my family. I dont want to be forced to self isolate and all the issues that would bring because someone who should have been self isolating, was happy to do so, suddenly decided they were a bit bored so nipped to waitrose.

If you are going to be rude or angry at me, then at least make sure you actually understand what I have said in the first place.

”I don't even believe that there is a Coronavirus.”

Wow. If not, then we are living through the biggest Derren Brown style misdirection in history. A hoax involving more than half the planet.

And the sheer numbers of extras they had to hire on location in China and Italy alone must’ve cost a bomb!

ZombieFan · 15/03/2020 01:47

So people are only going to self isolate if they are paid enough?

Goodbye human race.

Waitaway1970 · 15/03/2020 07:06

@Oldbutstillgotit well done following the advise/ hope you make a full and speedy recovery. You certainly have the right mindset and attitude for it. Good for you! Wish more people had your common sense!

Forgone90 · 15/03/2020 07:09

This is the reason why they will not shut the schools and it will lead to worse transmission than if they were open... people in this country will not go out of there way if it is an inconvenience for them.

Forgone90 · 15/03/2020 07:10

@duffeldaisy how cool would that be tho...

adaline · 15/03/2020 07:11

This thread is a prime example of human selfishness.

It's inconvenient for me to self isolate so I won't. Even if that means I'm potentially spreading a killer virus to the most vulnerable people in society. My need to go for a run because I'm at home is more important.

Waitaway1970 · 15/03/2020 07:12

We as a family travelled just before the outbreak. We have self-isolated as a precaution and are now in loose lockdown by the entire country until further notice. Children due to be taking final exams in 6 weeks which would determine uni places etc. All up in the air! Self isolation is not fun, but then neither is dying from a horrible illness like this. People need to stop being selfish and do what’s right for the entire world! If we all took care of our own right now, we would be doing a lot better. Some of us have had no choice and it’s probably a good thing because whilst we all need to work to pay our bills, dying an early death would make that money useless. We need to listen to the health experts rather than the economists and politicians! Stay safe

adaline · 15/03/2020 07:14

@theblueflowers if you are self-isolating then you are not supposed to leave your house at all.

What on earth are people finding so hard to understand about that? It doesn't mean "don't leave the house unless you're on a bike, or running, or walking the dog" it means don't leave the house. At all.

TheSheepofWallSt · 15/03/2020 07:20

Genuine question- is it okay to go out into your garden if in self isolation?

adaline · 15/03/2020 07:22

If you have a private garden then I believe that's fine Smile it's going out in public places that's not okay.

Pensionista · 15/03/2020 07:23

We are on lockdown in Spain. We are under house arrest. We are not allowed out unless its for food or medicines or health appointments. Even then only one person is allowed out unless they are accompanying someone disabled. This is the definition of self isolation. These are scary times. The world will change forever.

Nononoandno · 15/03/2020 07:24

Keeping at least 10 feet away from anyone in the garden so if neighbours are close is sensible

Nononoandno · 15/03/2020 07:33

I’ve just read up that there is 7 strains of CV so some are worse that others!! So seeing some people on tv saying it was mild for them might be the case... but it feels like it could be a lottery of which strain you could potentially get? So let’s all just take as much precaution now, introducing social distancing now!! IMO
My son is due back from abroad we will be on lock down when he returns for two weeks and we will distance ourselves as much as possible at home

FloconDeNeige · 15/03/2020 07:39

@adaline
There’s a concurrent thread on here full of people who are apoplectic about the possibility of the over 70s being asked to self-isolate. Apparently, many of them can’t as they have ‘active social lives’. WTAF?

If the very fucking group who these measures are aiming to protect aren’t willing to inconvenience themselves by isolating, why in God’s name should the rest of the population risk their jobs, homes and education for them??

If ‘the most vulnerable’ do not accept that they need to stay in to protect themselves, I don’t see why everyone else should have to stay in to protect them either.

Either people come together to act collaboratively and minimise both health and economic risks to as many as possible, or they don’t. The reality is, if the vulnerable themselves won’t self-isolate, they are simply going to die.

Forgone90 · 15/03/2020 07:39

I’ve just read up that there is 7 strains of CV

That is because coronavirus has been around for ever. those 7 strains include SARS and even the common cold this strain is Covid19 which i believe may have 2 strains. certainly not 7 tho!

Nononoandno · 15/03/2020 07:57

@Waitaway1970
What country are you in?

Waitaway1970 · 15/03/2020 08:14

@Nonononoandno we are in a Scandinavian country where they put the welfare of the people first. However, we self isolated as a sensible measure before it was required.

ValleyOfTheTramadols · 15/03/2020 11:27

@IfYoureNotIntoYoga Thank you. Feeling a bit sheepish this morning for my rant last night. I'm just overwhelmed with worry for my baby and my dad. It does make me hysterical at times.

JuggleBug · 15/03/2020 11:28

Pensionista

Whereabouts in Spain are you? I am here as well. We've been asked to only leave for emergencies, food, medicine etc... But people still walking to shops in groups/couples walking down street with their toddlers etc ...

However I'm not in one of the hugely affected areas so possibly why.

JuggleBug · 15/03/2020 11:30

It's quieter for sure with the restaurants, bars, beaches closed. But people are certainly not isolsting themselves though. Worrying.

Pensionista · 15/03/2020 12:20

JugglBug.....I'm half an hour inland from Alicante in a little Spanish village in the mountains. I never thought it could get here. I am near Elda. The government is enforcing this now and people have to queue outside of shops if they go for food. Only one person can leave the house for food or medicines. I feel like I'm in some sort of disaster movie. I think this will eventually happen in the UK. I am one of the lucky ones, at least I have a large garden where I can get some fresh air. I feel so sorry for those people who's business's are badly effected. The worst thing for me is the uncertainty of the next few weeks and how long this will last. They actually turned planes from the UK back in mid air on Friday. Where are you ??

JuggleBug · 15/03/2020 12:26

Pensionista crazy how differently areas are dealing with this. I'm about half an hour from alicante as well but southwards down the coast.

People still out and about. Queuing to shop like by you but certainly still a lot out in the streets, walking around. No one telling anyone they can't either.

Like you, I feel very fortunate to have a garden. I'm currently out in mine now at least getting a bit of air and sun!

JuggleBug · 15/03/2020 12:28

Do you live out here? I'm trying to get home to the UK but not sure whether it's best to stay put now! Lots of flights sold out and the only ones left back to the UK are a fortune. Saw one yesterday with Ryanair on Tuesday for €300+ one way.

Definitely feel for those in hotels etc... Not too bad when you have a house here but wouldn't like to be trapped in a hotel.

IfYoureNotIntoYoga · 15/03/2020 13:01

@ValleyOfTheTramadols
Ah no worries!
Sometime we need to let it all out.
It's good to hear other people's side to this, it does put things in perspective!

Best wishes to you and your family.
