To be amazed at how many people are making excuses

Looking through these threads I'm feeling pretty horrified at the amount of people that either dont seem to be able to understand what self isolate actually means or are already making excuses as to why it can't possibly apply to them ?!?
Have read so many.. oh I'm not going to self isolate, I'm pretty sure it's just a cold. Can I still go for a walk. I need to go out for a run or else I'd go crazy, how am i going to walk the dog, I'd only pop to the shop really quickly

No wonder the schools aren't shutting, and we are not banning gatherings. I really can't understand how people are either not getting this or feel happy to just think sod the risk

Mortgage lenders giving breaks

Yet radio silence from housing associations with their so called social purpose and millions in surplus.

I don't have a washing machine in my flat as there is no space for one, I use the local launderette for all our washing. I can hand-wash underwear and socks and smaller items, but I would be worried if I could not wash larger items or bedding for an extended period, such as a month.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 13/03/2020 16:13

I don't understand why local NHS trusts haven't banned visitors to all hospitals. They don't need the Govt to sanction that - it's happened several times at our local general hospital due to a sickness bug. Same with care homes - stop visitors. No one will half inch sanitizers then and it will protect the vulnerable.

I agree. People in hospitals are, by definition, vulnerable to start off with.

alloutoffucks · 13/03/2020 16:14

I go to the launderette too, I could hand wash for a few weeks. Not nice, but I have done it when I have been skint.

bigchris · 13/03/2020 16:16

@HopefulFor2020 sounds tough , why did you get pregnant again though or was beyond your control ? Do you go to toddler groups etc to try to make up a network of mutual support

Pumpkinandpeas · 13/03/2020 16:21

I believe it's due to lack of correct information though. We are led to believe it's flu like symptoms so for people with "just a cough" they're treating it just as they would usually. Obviously now being told that a new continuous cough should lead to 7 days isolation leaves it up to the person to either do it or not.

JKScot4 · 13/03/2020 16:22

@HeIenaDove
You’re spot on, MN seems full of ignorant Tories.

ClientQueen · 13/03/2020 17:03

@Pumpkinandpeas we get full pay and no repercussions
Yet my colleague has trotted in merrily today with a new persistent cough that he woke up with. Into an office with an immunocompromised person. My boss has sent him home (and is not very happy)

SinkGirl · 13/03/2020 17:19

Just read that the uk has now got 784 confirmed cases.... that's less than 0.02% of the population. More people die from the normal flu each year but we're not all self isolating and stock piling hand sanitiser over that. I really don't understand the panic.

Do you genuinely not understand?

Yes, more people die from the flu each year, even with the flu vaccine and treatments available. COVID19 is new, more infectious and far more deadly.

Imagine that the flu is 10-40 times more deadly than it is, and there’s no vaccine.

How many people do you think will die if COVID19 is as widespread as the flu?

Disgraceful, you are being told to stay indoors but DWP are demanding a sick note??
According to half the pp here, it’ll be her own fault.

angell84 · 13/03/2020 18:01

@SinkGirl who says that it is more infectious than other diseases. Where has that been said?

Geepipe · 13/03/2020 18:52

I dont mean to come across as an asshole as i do agree, people who can afford to and need to self isolate should do. But it is stressful for people like me. Zero hour contract probably not eligable for SSP as i dont earn enough, in debt and cant have a cc or loan. We also have to worry about our futures in potentially becoming homeless and baliffs taking everything we own.

So i do agree that people shouldnt be selfish and go out unecessarily in the middle of a quarentine, or buying up stuff. Ive been disgusted seeing people online buying all the baby milk and calpol and paracetamol they dont need "just in case". I agree with stockpiling some essentials but leave some for everyone else especially people living hand to mouth.

3 people in my work have a nasty cough, fever flu like symptoms for a week or 2. Including my boss who insists on being at work despite the fact they have contracts that are not 0 hours and they get sick pay. But 3 of us are zero hour and will get nothing and may lose our jobs on top of this. So i guess I am pissed off about that. My uncle is terminally ill so i wont go anywhere near him and my grandparents are very frail and everyone in my family have heart problems and asthma (including me) so i will stick to phone calls. Me and dp only go to work and the shop as we have no money to actually go out anywhere else. I dont think our landlord will be thrilled if we cant pay rent and i dont think covid19s going to stop the bailiffs either.

So I see it from both sides. I cant afford to not work. So unless the government or my job force me to isolate i cant. However anyone who is financially able to and has a need too should.

ClientQueen · 13/03/2020 18:52

They've said there are going to be more cases / the 784 is confirmed, there is probably thousands with it and we won't know as they're not testing
Normal flu doesn't include countries on lockdown, and mass graves and new hospitals
There's also a vaccine...

HeIenaDove · 13/03/2020 18:58

No thats not me Ive copied and pasted it from Twitter.

SinkGirl · 13/03/2020 19:18

@angell84 you could have just googled this information...

Estimates for the R0 of COVID19 range from 2.2 to 2.8 from what I’ve seen (that’s basically how many people each infected person is expected to infect based on current transmission rates). Flu is generally around 1.5, SARS was 3.0

Here’s one study, you can look up others for yourself
www.imperial.ac.uk/media/imperial-college/medicine/sph/ide/gida-fellowships/Imperial-College-COVID19-transmissibility-25-01-2020.pdf

powkin · 14/03/2020 18:35

I am taking it seriously and fastidious with hand washing and gel etc.

HOWEVER... I’ve had a cough for a month after a horrible virus. And because of a massive leak our bathroom is being refitted, so now there’s brick dust everywhere.

My throat now hurts and it’s making my cough worse. Do I have Coronavirus? Or the same cough with added brick dust?! There are zero cases in my borough and I haven’t left the borough for over a week as I’ve been on A/L finishing uni work, so the chances seem slim.
Oh and I have allergies and allergy season has just started!

And I have a 13 month old. Who is teething and has had a cold, as she has had permanently for about 3-6 months. Try telling her not to put her hands in her mouth or up her nose and then all over my hands/mouth/nose. I can’t self isolate from her! there’s no one else who can help and my family are far away and don’t want them getting it.

I’m scared that if I self isolate now, when I don’t have it, then I’m going to go out and actually get it, then have to do it again. It’s just impossible to know. So I don’t think everyone is being totally selfish but just not having a clue if they actually have it.

Carol19578 · 14/03/2020 18:37

Should people self isolate if have just returned from abroad as have been on a plane with others,as symptoms dont appear until 2 to 14 days after contact with someone who has .coronavirus

FourTeaFallOut · 14/03/2020 18:39

Only if they are coming from particular countries, not if they have just been on a plane.

HopefulFor2020 · 14/03/2020 19:04

why did you get pregnant again though or was beyond your control ? Do you go to toddler groups etc to try to make up a network of mutual support

Without trying to sound defensive and snarky... I don't have to justify my life choices/changes of circumstances to strangers on the internet. I don't have a time machine so can't go back 8 months and do things differently based on the advice of bigchris. It's a pet hate of mine on this site when people start with 'why did you ever..?', it's done now so the reasons why aren't relevant.

And I don't have a toddler so I'd probably not fit in at toddler groups

Bozlem80 · 14/03/2020 19:07

From experience councils are not sympathetic one bit if you can’t afford to pay your rent or council tax, so how are people on minimum wage meant to cope?
