My toddler has a cough but my reading of the advice is 7 days from the start of symptoms. She started last thursday so I assume she is fine to not self isolate now! She has at no point had a temperature above 37 degrees as I have been taking her temp 3 times a day and so has her childcare.

The advice does say a "new cough or symptoms"

aprilhope · 12/03/2020 17:32

@Alwaysreadyforbed I agree.

MurrayTheMonk · 12/03/2020 17:32

The explanation for not stopping sporting events literally makes zero sense.
'One person might give three people it at a big event. You'll give more people it if you stay home as you will be more likely to give it your immediate family'.
But it's not either/ or is it? People are at home and then go to sporting events, then go home again. Thereby infecting strangers at the football and their family at home.

I'm not a person who questions stuff people in authority say very often. But this is bullshit surely?

HasaDigaEebowai · 12/03/2020 17:32

They have said persistent cough. Presumably that's not the occasional frog in the throat, its a regular cough

SansaSnark · 12/03/2020 17:32

@CKoRn The chief medical officer just said that they are projecting a death rate of 1% or less, and the chief scientific officer apparently agrees with him. However, a lot of the sources I have read have much higher predictions (1.5-3.4%).

Bearbehind · 12/03/2020 17:33

If they've actually admitted to there maybe being 10000 cases then it is probably more like 100000.

So what?

IMO the higher the actual numbers the better.

I think a lot of us might have or had it but we’ve generally been fine.

I also think the fact the spread is so random that there must be much more around than we’ve positively tested

The higher the number of actual cases the lower the death rate percentage is

Kuponut · 12/03/2020 17:33

DD2 was off today as she had a cough and a bit of a temperature - but it's a loose cough, her nose is full of snot and I'm pretty damned confident it's just a bad cold... so am I meant to isolate her for a week or not now?! FFS clear as mud.

Ciwirocks · 12/03/2020 17:34

I am so angry at the lack of action. He just doesn’t care that more people will die because he is doing nothing!

GalOopNorth · 12/03/2020 17:34

For now, Bear

Remember this takes a while to get serious and need hospital.

HasaDigaEebowai · 12/03/2020 17:35

@kuponut yes thats both symptoms they've specified

BiBiBirdie · 12/03/2020 17:35

We've all been told for over a decade now that unless you have D&V, just carry on with life, send your kids to school with coughs and chest infections, it's all fine.
Are we really expected to trust that people will now switch and do the opposite? What with fines and all sorts?
This is disgusting now.
Our government is willfully allowing people to die. They won't test anymore yet some people get it and are clueless that they have and so won't isolate as they have no symptoms.

It's about time someone like the UN steps in and says our government is not fit for purpose any longer and takes over. They are ignoring WHO. They are totally trying to act like Italy is a backward, poor sanitation bunch of soap dodgers. They have one of the best healthcare services in the world. We certainly don't anymore

We are fucked. Literally fucked.

RedLentilYellowLentil · 12/03/2020 17:35

Italy have shutdown and they’re still getting thousands a day.

But they've only just shut down. Obviously the shutdown isn't going to have an impact on the infection rate overnight, but that doesn't mean it's not an effective strategy, as Wuhan demonstrates.

womblewise · 12/03/2020 17:36

I'm a bit worried in case this is a really silly question, but ...

The government keep saying they are following the science, but why is their scientific advice so different to that of other countries? Why are other countries reacting so differently? Chris Whitty said this afternoon that school closures would be pointless unless they were closed for 12-13 weeks, but this is clearly not what other countries are being told, is it?

Bearbehind · 12/03/2020 17:36

Remember this takes a while to get serious and need hospital.

That’s not what they’re saying, hence the 7 day isolation

They seem to be saying that after 7 days it will either get better or worse

colouringinpro · 12/03/2020 17:36

Sansa that's how I feel. I do not trust this government. We are so out of line with almost every country that has cases...

SansaSnark · 12/03/2020 17:36

@Kuponut If her temperature is higher than 37.8 then yes, you are.

I agree the cough is vaguer, although all they said was new and continuous- I don't think the type of cough is necessarily relevant.

I agree she probably doesn't have it, but following the advice I think she should self isolate if she is the same tomorrow.

BretonKitten · 12/03/2020 17:36

This is Mr Cholmendley-Warner dispenses epidemiology and infection control to the great unwashed.

GalOopNorth · 12/03/2020 17:36

Peak 10-14 weeks away?

Alwaysreadyforbed · 12/03/2020 17:38

And also remember, this isn’t all the Boris’ decision. All Parties were in on the talks today so they should be held to account as well if you don’t like the actions

Butternutbrownie · 12/03/2020 17:39

@bearbehind

So what

So fucking what?

Seriously?

Dh and ds are both vulnerable and at risk. Of course the numbers matter to me. Are they more likely to catch it if the number is at 10000 or 100000?

Not sure why I'm bothering to talk to you. I've been lurking in these threads a while and don't understand why you are here at all when you obviously have such disdain for the discussion.

defthand · 12/03/2020 17:39

Oh Italy. Sad

Wannabangbang · 12/03/2020 17:40

The man is a joke, a complete and utter moron and a disgrace to the uk.
I don't trust him and why should i when he thinks we should wait unti we get to italys levels, why so we can all pass it on to our aging parents. Already lost one parent don't want to lose another because some dick who earns a bomb says we should all act as normal and we are in this together bs whilst he most probably goes hide in some bloody underground bunker until it dies down. Hope he catches it as he's been in contact with health minister, as he's so old he can go croak it like all the poor souls he is leaving to catch this and die.

SansaSnark · 12/03/2020 17:40

@Bearbehind I think you have confused two issues there- the 7 days is because that is when people are apparently most infectious, although it is also true that after 7 days is when people start to develop more serious symptoms.

1happyhippie · 12/03/2020 17:41

I just don’t understand why they think they know better than all the other countries doing this so different?
What science are they following that only implies to the uk?
Don’t have much confidence in them at all

SansaSnark · 12/03/2020 17:41

@womblewise IMO, at this stage, they are not following the science, and the easiest assumption to make is that they are lying to us for whatever reason.
