mangepas basically that the govt has not acted hard and fast enough, he would ban mass gatherings/events, close schools etc now, encourage wfh where possible etc. And that it is clear there is no one scientific approach that is the right one, hence the different approaches in other countries.

MangePasTesOnglesVilain · 13/03/2020 10:22

Could the gov text latest advice to everyone's phones with uk accounts?

Purplewhitelie · 13/03/2020 10:22

Horrible thing to say but as soon as there is a couple of deaths in the 30 something age group. Suddenly many will want to close schools.

HasaDigaEebowai · 13/03/2020 10:22

I'm calling because I'm very ill and was told by Public Health to phone in.

Sorry to hear that Flowers

SirChing · 13/03/2020 10:22

@excitedmumtobe87 that's also true. Which would make lock down pointless too.

I am not saying I agree with the government, I can just see their logic. It's harsh and horrible and people will die, but developing herd immunity if the thing doesn't mutate could well end up lowering the overall death rate over time. A semi managed exposure to this virus, whilst protecting the most vulnerable from it, is surely the closest thing to a vaccine that we have?

MangePasTesOnglesVilain · 13/03/2020 10:22

I also worry that the advice may not be widely enough available in other languages,

SubjectMatterExpert · 13/03/2020 10:23

@SirChing, sure it will still be around. The idea of lockdown is to avoid a massive peak /to control the number of patients. BECAUSE we do not have enough ICU bed/ventilators to treat very many critically ill patients. In Italy they had to make the decision not to intimate patients with pre existing conditions/co morbities. To be grim; leaving them to asphyxiate. That is war time medicine

The reason Boris has taken the approach he has is to protect the economy. I don’t comprehend why would doubt this. He shows us consistently that this is his priority

RedToothBrush · 13/03/2020 10:24

It was in the press conference redtoothbrush so I suspect the text came out before that.

Last night I had the 6 o'clock news on in the background but didn't pay 100% attention to it. I was on twitter all evening though.

I'm engaged, listening and paying attention. Still missed that bit of advice.

The text I got earlier in the day is more immediate and concrete.

They need to consider nationwide covid-19 updates to ensure there isn't this confusion and people are properly informed.

Good communication is essential over this. The government needs to ensure that everyone is on the same page.

Don't know if it came from my GP surgery or the local hospital records but I had a text with this the other day.

SubjectMatterExpert · 13/03/2020 10:27

@yoloPenguinsEatfish shampoo and soap the same thing. It’s about REMOVAL of the virus from hands, rather than killing it

SirChing · 13/03/2020 10:30

Oh I totally agree with this. It has been clear for years that the Tories are willing to sacrifice lives for ideology. That's why Tory voters get all offended when you point out all the poor and disabled who have died under Tory policies. Sadly for them, they are possibly about to be similarly effected by the sociopathic regime they voted for.

Lweji · 13/03/2020 10:30

Actually, proper soap does inactivate the virus because it destroys its fat based capsule.

But Dove sort of bars, as far as I know, won't.

That's also why hand disinfectants need at least 60% alcohol. It's to dissolve the fat in the virus (lipid layer).

I thought something similar, young and high profile will really put this at the forefront.

SubjectMatterExpert · 13/03/2020 10:34

@Lweji what do you mean by ‘proper’ soap?

BiBiBirdie · 13/03/2020 10:35

We know they know that after ten years, they have critically underfunded the NHS. We all remember the magic money tree comment.
Even if they do the Tory norm and chuck money they've suddenly found at it (and let's not forget we've been promised this money chuck before and not seen it, for example the promise of 40 new hospitals, the huge money for we left the EU per week), you can't train new medical staff overnight.
You can't build hospitals as quick as China did. You can't make a medicine or a vaccine without rigourous testing.

We are having to rely on patterns we do know.

The NHS is at its most busy from October-April. Flu/cold/pneumonia season. These illnesses won't disappear due to CV.
You also have the "worried well" who will demand medicine and attention and testing and take up resources.
If we do go on hibernation. When do we come out? We can't do that until a vaccine happens. That could be 18 months away.
If it goes on into summer, what's to say riots won't happen. It's happened before over one from getting shot by Police. Imagine you take people's civil liberties away.
So either we face it now, and take a risk.
Or face a bigger risk and have it come back possibly worse in winter once everyone has started to go abroad and possibly start the cycle off again and have an NHS which cannot treat anyone with anything else.

That's the million dollar question. Do I trust any of them? No. Do I trust China? No.
If schools close that's going to cause further issues with frontline staff.

if a country has an emergency notification system of course.
in the netherlands that is tested regularly and works for all mobiles that are active in the countries.
no idea if UK has something like that - dunno, never came across that so far.
