Stay at home for one week if you’ve a cold (even though all evidence is that incubation is two weeks)

People over 70 don’t go on cruises.

WHAT!!!

134 new cases in a day and no action. 13 EU countries have closed all schools, another 11 partial closures but apparently no action needed in Uk.

Jesus.

China are slowly relaxing their restrictions. If the virus begins to resurge, they tighten them again. They are tuning their response like a skilled radio operator, from what I am seeing.

mynamesmrdiggety · 12/03/2020 17:58

@AutumnCrow I thought so, I don't know why people spread completely wrong information!

ILLBESUZIE · 12/03/2020 17:59

Thankfully Boris has medical experts to guide him. I'm pretty sure they are a little more clued up than you or I.

I8toys · 12/03/2020 17:59

I'm going to see a play in London on Saturday. Am I wrong? Is it dangerous? Even though people have to go to work every day in our capital. I agree with this line. Can you imagine the panic buying and carrying on if they said everyone had to work at home? Its already crazy and creating anxiety induced panic.

Fedupandpoor · 12/03/2020 18:00

Does anyone know anyone with Corona virus? It's so weird that there hasn't been a single person come out and say they have it and what it's like. Oh, except Tom Hanks...

I8toys · 12/03/2020 18:01

I don't know anyone with it and I did a poll at work - no one knows anyone with it! Its very odd.

nellodee · 12/03/2020 18:01

If we don't close things now, let's look at the possible figures.

Worst case: 80% catch the virus
WHO figures of CFR: 3.4%
Population of UK: 66440000

Actual worst case: 1.8 million deaths

THIS is what you are measuring against 1000s of people losing their jobs.

Porcupineinwaiting · 12/03/2020 18:02

@SparklingXmas go educate yourself. Of course its airborne- every time a carrier coughs or sneezes they create their own little virus aerosol.

Cam77 · 12/03/2020 18:02

@BackInTime
Yes, I agree. They are facing a crisis head on while we are trying to sleepwalk through it. I'm sure if after another 3 months they still havent won the battle, they'll change tack, but surely at least try to save lives?

Moomin8 · 12/03/2020 18:02

It's not only deaths from the virus though, it's the effects on people with other conditions because of overrun hospitals

BorneFeet · 12/03/2020 18:03

No. They are professionals. Listen to them and calm the fuck down!

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 12/03/2020 18:03

Very few people are known to have it at the moment. Even if you take the assumed figure of 10k people with mild symptoms that is a fraction of 1% of the population

TheQueef · 12/03/2020 18:04

China and Germany have obedient populations.
This may be a Yorkshire thing but tell pensioners here to stay home and they will be on the bus to town before you finish the sentence.
Add into that all the fannies saying the .Gov will tell them when to act like the .gov has our individual health as a consideration.

I'm immunosuppressed so I isolated as much as possible weeks ago but even if I wasn't I'd head to the bunker.

gower4 · 12/03/2020 18:04

It's not odd that you don't know anyone with it. It hasn't actually taken off yet. That's why they're trying to buy time

Witchend · 12/03/2020 18:05

Shouldn't Boris have self isolated by now anyway? Wasn't he in a meeting with the Health Minister who then tested positive?

Cam77 · 12/03/2020 18:05

I've heard plenty of people say they have it. One that stuck in my mind was from a young Westerner in Wuhan. He didn't die, but he compared it to drowning. That's the experience that awaits 10-15% of the British population under the "do nothing" plan.

EmpressSuiko · 12/03/2020 18:05

He said at least 7 days.

I’m assuming he meant people will need to use their own judgement, if they have a cold and after 7 days symptoms are gone then they should be fine to go back to work, if their symptoms worsen or are still ongoing then they would need to continue with the self isolation until fit and well again or if really worsening then obviously get straight in touch with 111 as may need hospital care.

GoatyGoatyMingeMinge · 12/03/2020 18:06

I'd much rather have policy decided by expert scientists in the field who have evidence than by Boris Pants-on-fire Johnson (god help us) or by hysterical armchair virologists in an anonymous chat forum!

HardWorkShy · 12/03/2020 18:06

Does anyone know anyone with Corona virus?

They aren't testing people with symptoms unless they've travelled to Italy/China or been in contact with someone who has a confirmed case.

I know three people in London who are ill and were told to self-isolate but because they haven't been tested they don't know if they have it.

DentalPatient · 12/03/2020 18:07

I think the most important point made was buried. There is no point trying to stop this, it is a worldwide pandemic so what we need to protect us is herd immunity. Just like all young children being vaccinated so the ones who cannot cope with a vaccination are protected.

Yes people who at most risk can take extra measures and there is some value in delaying to ease the burden on the nhs, but we actually need the majority of the healthy population to develop immunity.

GalOopNorth · 12/03/2020 18:07

nellodee I agree they are lying and being deliberately disingenuous.

I wonder whether they will try to say, when so many die, that we had a particularly virulent strain or something?

By the time it’s show we didn’t, and it was purely hideously mismanaged, the headlines have gone.

I think that’s what they will do.

You read it here first..

Bunnyfuller · 12/03/2020 18:07

I think they want to follow the herd immunity plan.

Interestingly, the British public (who can not afford bypassing the NHS) will be in the Petri dish.

All those pro-Brexit pensioners who voted for him, I always expected a betrayal but never quite so callous.

I’m not old but I have issues with my heart. I guess I fall between the cracks.

tinytemper66 · 12/03/2020 18:08

So keep washing your hands, stay home if you have a cough and if you are over 70 don't book a cruise!

Bunnyfuller · 12/03/2020 18:08

Did I hear them say there’s probably between 5000-10000 cases as tracing kind of got a bit lost?

GalOopNorth · 12/03/2020 18:09

But there’s no evidence that we can develop herd immunity to this! It’s a virus, they change all the time, that’s why we need a new flu vaccine every year!
