Stay at home for one week if you’ve a cold (even though all evidence is that incubation is two weeks)

People over 70 don’t go on cruises.

WHAT!!!

134 new cases in a day and no action. 13 EU countries have closed all schools, another 11 partial closures but apparently no action needed in Uk.

Jesus.

so... say your cough lasts longer than 7 days...

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 12/03/2020 17:49

I think they are being realistic. How long do you think a lockdown can be sustained? People will start breaking it after a couple of weeks, people aren’t even sticking to the self isolation rules now.

A lockdown has to be timed closer to the peak of the epidemic for it to be most effective.

Newjez · 12/03/2020 17:50

Dither and fucking delay

MarshaBradyo · 12/03/2020 17:50

It was easy to understand the CMO and CSA on why they are doing what they are. They are leading this.

Cam77 · 12/03/2020 17:50

We are in this for the long haul and if we went into close down now people would protest as shortages hit, services start not happening.
Protest at what? What are they going to do wave a few placards in a deserted town centre or outside supermarkets? Or perhaps people would just knuckle down and look after their families. Eat simple food for a couple of months. Kids doing work on computers while their parents watch TV. You know, like 1.4 billion did in China.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 12/03/2020 17:50

This is all about the economy and not exposing the impact of austerity on the NHS. Oh and English exceptionalism.

LakieLady · 12/03/2020 17:50

Surely people can see that this is an economic decision? They don't give a fuck about it spreading further at all do they?

If 100,000 pensioners were to die of it, the savings in state pension alone would be nearly £1bn a year.

Newjez · 12/03/2020 17:51

My cough has lasted three weeks. The cold only lasted three days.

MauriceandAlec · 12/03/2020 17:51

God, he's a weapons grade cunt.

mynamesmrdiggety · 12/03/2020 17:51

I thought it made sense on a way (ducks.) They really have to keep the economy going and people can't self isolate for months. They need people to get it and get over it.

LeggyLinda · 12/03/2020 17:52

I’m probably going to be in the minority here, but I think this is a very sensible approach.

MarshaBradyo · 12/03/2020 17:53

There’s a fair few of us Leggy.

RosieLancs · 12/03/2020 17:53

As much as I dislike Johnson and cringe every time I hear his mutterings, the things the experts are saying make sense.

Cam77 · 12/03/2020 17:53

I think they are being realistic. How long do you think a lockdown can be sustained? People will start breaking it after a couple of weeks, people aren’t even sticking to the self isolation rules now.
Well it worked pretty damn well in China, a country of 1.4billion.... Pop to the supermarket once or twice a week, otherwsie people stayed at home. Kids hitting the books 8 hours a day instead of going to school. And most people there don't even have gardens or safe outside places for a bit of fresh air. Are British people really that weak that they couldnt take a month or two of hardship to save perhaps tens of thousands of lives? British bulldog my arse.

mynamesmrdiggety · 12/03/2020 17:53

@SparklingXmas did they say it isn't airborne? I missed that.

wildcherries · 12/03/2020 17:54

Im really surprised at this response. I've cancelled my theatre trip to London (would have been next week). I just cannot risk bringing it home. Would have been three plays in as many days. Gutted at the money I'm losing (took me such a long time to save up). But I'd feel so selfish going with our government doing a lot to counter the spread.

AutumnCrow · 12/03/2020 17:54

The virus is not airborne

I bet you don't want Nadine Dorries coughing at you though

Saladmakesmesad · 12/03/2020 17:54

There's nothing to stop anyone who feels strongly that the advice is wrong self isolating themselves for the next 3-4 months

Yes there fucking IS! I’m so sick of this glib response. Until the government advise it, my office (1.5k people) won’t close. If employees stay at home they’ll get FIRED. If they take their kids out of school they’ll get fined and then fired by their employers. ‘Nothing to stop’ is bullshit. We aren’t in control of these things at all if we want to be able to afford our rents or mortgages or to feed our families.

viccat · 12/03/2020 17:55

I think it's actually sensible when you listen to the science behind it - as one of the experts said, much of it is about understanding the behavioral science. As they predict the peak will be late May, do you really think most people would be willing to basically completely change the way they live for 2-3 months?

And yes, of course it's about the economy but that's not removed from all of our lives. It might be ok if your workplace agrees to pay full salary while you isolate yourself at home or if you can work from home, but if you're a self employed plumber, gardener, therapist or caterer, you'd be looking at a massive loss of income if you suddenly can't work for two months.

mynamesmrdiggety · 12/03/2020 17:55

@Cam77 but surely when they relax the procedures in China it will just resurge? I feel like we're acknowledging that most people will get it and we can't prevent that so let's carry on as normal and get it over with.

BackInTime · 12/03/2020 17:55

@Cam77 Completely different society and government to China.

wildcherries · 12/03/2020 17:56

It's airborne. Droplets from coughing. At least that's what the Danish health authorities are saying.

AutumnCrow · 12/03/2020 17:57

@mynamesmrdiggety No it's bollocks saying it's not airborne. Take care out there.

Moomin8 · 12/03/2020 17:57

Uhh. If you want a government who cares about vulnerable people, may I suggest you stop voting in the tories

DoubleAction · 12/03/2020 17:58

Well yes Salad, you'll suffer some financial hardship but what you're calling for is for everyone else to suffer financial hardship.

If we shut everything down now 1000s of businesses will fail and 1000s of people will lose their jobs.
