Cobra meeting? Schools

Has anyone heard anything about the results of the COBRA meeting yet?

Or news on schools closing?

Will they close universities too?

Yes, I'm with you on the frustrated front @CloudyVanilla.

FlibbertyGiblets · 12/03/2020 16:01

Scotland announcement is on the bbc news website.

AlternativePerspective · 12/03/2020 16:02

Thing is, there’s no actual evidence that school closures make any kind of difference is there?

In china/Italy schools were closed first which didn’t actually halt the spread hence why they moved to lockdown.

If you only close schools children will gather regardless and will still spread it if possible.

Large gatherings and public transport are far more likely to be places where the virus will spread, not least because e.g. public transport has a constantly changing customer base,so the customer who travels on the 6:00 bus this morning could leave the virus there to be contracted by every bus full of passengers until the end of the timetable. Whereas while children in schools could pass it to one another, but they’re not meeting with a constant stream of other people like that bus.

StormyClouds · 12/03/2020 16:04

I think Sturgeon's announcement this afternoon makes it very clear that schools will close- it is simply a case of when.

I can see an announcement next Tuesday/ Wednesday saying schools will close from Friday 20th.

Chocolatedaim · 12/03/2020 16:04

It’s so frustrating
Hancock criticised Italy for acting too slowly, surely we are just doing the same?

Am I blind? I still don't see any official announcement

NeurotrashWarrior · 12/03/2020 16:05

I'd been guessing the week before Easter; next Friday makes sense as it gives staff a chance to organise home learning. (Teacher.)

Someone else posted this on the other thread. Looks very much like no closures for a good while.

AlternativePerspective · 12/03/2020 16:08

Nope, all the bbc says is that NS said during the meeting that we were moving into delay phase but there would be no school closures in Scotland.

Incidentally, what is the mitigation phase?

strawberrylipgloss · 12/03/2020 16:08

I've seen online source saying Boris is doing a press conference at 4:30-4:45
Nicola Sturgeon has already made her announcement

ihaveaquestionplease · 12/03/2020 16:09

@strawberrylipgloss where is the link to NS announcement?

ihaveaquestionplease · 12/03/2020 16:11

Looks like NS has said a lot of "ifs, mays and maybes" - nothing concrete

bemoreeverything · 12/03/2020 16:12

Maybe 7to25 is Boris!

It's unlikely. I'm not his biggest fan but I think even Boris could have come up with slightly more than 'real' when asked to give a source.

30not13 · 12/03/2020 16:15

Bbc1 now

30not13 · 12/03/2020 16:16

Oh just going over wee nippys statement. When it started thought it was the bojo upcoming sorry!

ListeningQuietly · 12/03/2020 16:17

What is the point of closing schools ?
Kids are not getting sick with COVID anywhere in the world.
Children of parents who cannot work from home will be stuck.
Older people will be more at risk if kids are roaming the streets all day.

Arrange isolation for the vulnerable and restrict large groupings will have much greater impact (see Singapore and Hong Kong and Japan)

Windyone · 12/03/2020 16:19

I’m in Scotland and have just watched NS announcement of “movement into the next phase” I can’t really understand what that means practically. Can someone tell me?

ihaveaquestionplease · 12/03/2020 16:21

@Windyone she doesn't mean anything. She's said nothing of substance, she just wanted to get in there first.

Windyone · 12/03/2020 16:23

@ihaveaquestionplease yes I agree I thought it was just me! Oh “don’t go to a football match if you’ve got symptoms” brilliant!! 🙄

StormyClouds · 12/03/2020 16:23

@ListeningQuietly

Because children may not fall ill, but they can still catch the virus and pass it on to parents, grandparents and other more vulnerable people.

Schools WILL close- it is just a question of when that is. Next Friday is my prediction.

Evenquieterlife33 · 12/03/2020 16:25

I want to know about school trips within the U.K. my little one has a residential in Surrey. I don’t want them going away from home at the moment.

AlternativePerspective · 12/03/2020 16:27

But schools closing will mean children are out there in the community at large. You cannot self isolate the whole country’s population of children.

And as I said upthread, there will always be deaths from Corona, even if/when there is a vaccine.

LouHotel · 12/03/2020 16:29

Boris is living out his Churchillian fantasy of keep calm and carry on except when bombs were dropping on London you took cover when it was happening!
