Cobra meeting? Schools

tearsandtiaras · 12/03/2020 14:33

Has anyone heard anything about the results of the COBRA meeting yet?

Or news on schools closing?

Will they close universities too?

OP posts:
MakeLemonade · 12/03/2020 14:49

The economy is fucked regardless so we might as well try and keep everyone safe.

Hercwasonaroll · 12/03/2020 14:49

You do realise this is how exponential growth works?!

We will move into the delay phase and possibly stop large gatherings. But I don't think schools will close yet.

brilliotic · 12/03/2020 14:51

The UK is just about on the level where the number of known cases doubles roughly every two days.

So by next Friday (8 days) it would be 600x2x2x2x2 cases ... maybe about 9600 cases...?

That's if any of the other Western European countries are anything to go by.

Chocolatepeanuts · 12/03/2020 14:52

Im in NI. ROI have announced closure of schools, universities and childcare facilities. Seems pointless if we dont follow suit, viruses dont recognise borders!

ihaveaquestionplease · 12/03/2020 14:53

@brilliotic what would it be in 4 weeks roughly if that rate continues? (I could work it out but I'm tired and lazy Grin)

Smithtylater · 12/03/2020 14:55

A close relative of mine is in a nursing home for dementia patients. I have just literally received a phone call saying only essential visitors allowed (healthcare staff etc) and that they are not allowed out at the moment.

belay · 12/03/2020 14:57

Where is this please?

Hugglespuffed · 12/03/2020 14:59

@smithtylater someone I know has said the same..in wales.

StatisticallyChallenged · 12/03/2020 15:00

We're still under the doubling every 2 days

2 days ago was 384 (so we'd need to be on 768)
3 days ago was 321 - double would have been 641, we actually got 460

For march we've averaged 1.7x every 2 days, last week is 1.6

brilliotic · 12/03/2020 15:01

ihaveaquestionplease:
4 weeks = 28 days => double the current number 14 times. so 590 times 2 by the power of 14. 2 by the power of 14 is 16'384. So 590 times 16'384.... that's over 9 million.

Just to be clear, I am NOT saying that the number of cases in the UK is going to double every 2 days for the next month.

AiryFairyMum · 12/03/2020 15:02

We've taken our daughter out of school and are both working from home. It just isn't worth the risk. We've told school we are self-isolating and they seem happy with that.

SlayingDragons · 12/03/2020 15:03

DH has just had his post cancer check up for tomorrow cancelled. He’s been told that all appointments until 31st March have been cancelled and he would get a new date sent through in the post at a later date. Not going to lie - I’m gutted. He gets a check up every 3 months - if his appointment had been a day earlier he would have had it, now it looks like it’ll be at least a month - 6 weeks late. More likely 2 months or more. I know that 2 years on his chance of recurrence is not hugely high, but there’s a reason he still has regular checks and this doesn’t help.

StormyClouds · 12/03/2020 15:03

The Daily Express now saying all schools to close next Friday 20th March.

TurquoiseDress · 12/03/2020 15:05

Watching with very keen interest

brilliotic · 12/03/2020 15:06

Though statisticallychallenged points out that current confirmed numbers are not (yet) doubling in two days, I would point out that different speeds of spread are probably an artefact of different testing and reporting, rather than actual differences in the speed of spread. I doubt that the virus spreads more slowly here than everywhere else, especially given that everywhere else has put in place measures to slow the speed of spread, unlike here. So I am thinking, that even if the official numbers don't show that (yet), the actual spread in the UK might be similar to everywhere else, where it is mostly (roughly) doubling every two days.

ihaveaquestionplease · 12/03/2020 15:06

@StormyClouds nothing has been announced yet.

Bluewavescrashing · 12/03/2020 15:07

That's just speculation though, it hasn't been announced yet.

CasparBloomberg · 12/03/2020 15:07

If all the people complaining of not being able to get tested or even get through to 111, were actually tested we would find the numbers a lot higher.
I'm not normally one for conspiracy theories but if this were Iran or China publishing these statistics the UK would be complaining about how they were manipulating the data by withholding testing ...

ihaveaquestionplease · 12/03/2020 15:07

@brilliotic yeah, I bet there's lots of people they have it that haven't been tested.

CasparBloomberg · 12/03/2020 15:08

@brilliotic you wrote what I was also thinking/writing Wink

Thinkingabout1t · 12/03/2020 15:10

Apparently the 12pm announcement came from Mumsnet and mumsnet alone

No, heard on BBC. Govt changed the time.

cheesemongery · 12/03/2020 15:15

No school closures following the meeting, no plans to cancel mass gatherings.

I knew BJ was a twat but this is something else. HE is the super spreader. So angry, it's going to get completely out of control.

cheesemongery · 12/03/2020 15:17

10 deaths now, 134 new cases in 24 hours. SHUTDOWN BJ you dickhead.

Sorry - bit carried away Grin

littlepeaegg · 12/03/2020 15:17

@cheesemongery how do you know? I didn't think anything had been released yet

caperberries · 12/03/2020 15:18

Nothing has been announced yet, cheese ?
