re handwashing:

Do we have estimates on how much transmission is from surfaces and how much is airborne, the 2m proximity ?

Washing hands does bugger all for airborne transmission, so if that is significant,
then banning gatherings of over say 100 adults (excl public transport) looks reasonable

I've kept DD2 off school today - she's got a stinking cold (fairly sure it's nothing more than a stinking cold) but I don't want to be sending her in spreading those germs on top of everything else going around. She's currently cuddling 10 teddy bears simultaneously. I worry desperately about her as colds knock her absolutely for six anyway and we nearly lost her due to pneumonia a few years back.

I keep wondering what the situation is amongst the Italian (sizeable) Chinese community. Have they been badly hit? Because as far as I can tell it seems that skiiers and their circles are in the eye of the storm.

I donated soaps & disinfectant sprays to our school and suggest others do the same if they can. We are facing a public health crisis without adequate hygiene measures in some of our schools and an NHS already on its knees.
Schools & mass events should have been closed by now. We have been flying in the face of WHO advice & the hard won clinical experience of China because of a theoretical model - with every day that passes I find myself picturing a crappy ZX spectrum in a basement, smoking slightly, spewing out models that appear to take no account of the inexorable march of exponential maths...
But they’re the experts and I cannot wait for them to be right and in that case I will happily admit I was an utter idiot to be so worried.

Tom Hanks has tested positive and said it is just like having a cold. I didn't think cold symptoms were the same

Alib838 · 12/03/2020 09:33

To those in a schools struggling to get soap. Be transparent and honest with the parents. No excuses. If you genuinely cannot get it advise all the parents of the situation without delay and ask that all children help by bringing in a small bar wrapped in say a flannel in a plastic food bag if necessary. Whatever it takes. Regardless of the inconvenience. Better that than negligent.

BigChocFrenzy · 12/03/2020 09:33

btw, I often have my supper in our local cafe and have noticed the last couple of weeks that all the diners are very well spread out.

Normally everyone congregates at the front end of the cafe that looks out onto the Rhine;
Now, the diners are spread out way into the back corners that are only occupied when the place is rammed

People are listening and changing habits

"I donated soaps & disinfectant sprays to our school and suggest others do the same if they can."

Excellent and simple way to be proactive and public-spirited

Most parents can afford to donate a couple of bars of soap

Maybe make this a thing on the next non-uniform day, instead of bringing a quid
It would also help raise awareness among parents

WouldShouldCould · 12/03/2020 09:39

Bigchoc not where I am, I went in early yesterday to change the meeting room around, added more tables and put chairs a metre apart, people pulled chairs together, the was 18 of us and only three myself included sat at the other end of the table spread out. Also those who were close to each other all shared a bag of unwrapped sweets. These are people that have wodly travelled over the last few days/weeks.

WouldShouldCould · 12/03/2020 09:40

Agree about schools asking parents, I'm providing alcohol anti bac for my kids happy to provide soap.

Glittercandle · 12/03/2020 09:42

My children’s schools seem to be ok for soap but if they weren’t then I would donate some as would many other parents.

I think schools without soap should close on health and safety grounds - no soap means they can't follow Government guidelines and should therefore be closed.

BigChocFrenzy · 12/03/2020 09:43

"Women could be disproportionately hit by coronavirus"

but women are disproportionately in the care sector in all countries and all seem to have more men dying than women

Maybe doesn't show in statistics because deaths are concentrated in age 70+ when almost all would be retired ?

SEX
DEATH RATE
confirmed cases
Male
4.7%
Female
2.8%

I've gone into lockdown, I'm utterly terrified of catching this virus because of an underlying respiratory condition which already means I'm in respiratory failure. I've cancelled all appointments and have stopped looking after my grandson as my DD is a nurse working in a large health centre.
We are trying to put in place sensible measures

BigChocFrenzy · 12/03/2020 09:46

"schools without soap should close on health and safety grounds"

Or the head could use a tiny bit of initiative, raid petty cash and send someone to the supermarket / order from Amazon same day

BigChocFrenzy · 12/03/2020 09:47

Many parents who can't afford to stay home to look after the kids could easily afford to drop off a few packs of soap to the staff when they drop off the kids

If they are warned the school may otherwise close
