This is brilliant.

Can't vouch for it, but someone needs to get it to Boris Johnson. Sobering reading.

@TheElementsOfMedical "The best NHS care available" yep, there's a reason I chose my words like that...Wink
But basically, everyone is preempting us to be worse than Italy if we don't do what they are doing.
But we don't actually know that will be the case.
And basically, if it isn't worse will people then concede that the government approach was ok?

As for some schools not even having soap. how fucking stupid and irresponsible can schools be

Soap wasn’t in our delivery this week-they didn’t have any, so it wasn’t delivered. How is that fucking stupid and irrespective of us?

ofwarren · 12/03/2020 09:04

greenbutterfly the injection works totally fine on children.
My son is a transplant patient and every child with a transplant is told to have the injection by their consultant.
Your GP is talking bollocks

@Sunshinegirl82

They know that the for a short period the NHS will struggle quite significantly. This has been very clearly acknowledged by the CMO.

Yes, exactly. so when it happens people shouldn't be shocked.

Cannon fodder Confused

Sunshinegirl82 · 12/03/2020 09:05

The CMO and PHE have been very clear that bringing in further measures too early will not help. They will have modelled 100s of possible scenarios.

If we lock everything down too early the risk is that we drive the peak further down the line (possibly back into the autumn/winter months when the NHS is under the most strain).

They are attempting to have a flattened peak during the summer months to maximise the ability of the NHS to cope. With any luck the warmer weather will also slow down rates of transmission.

Honestly, if you haven't watched the full video of Chris Whitty answering questions on this at the select committee I would urge you to do so.

We have a small stash of soap at our school, but obviously with increased hand washing this isn't going to last as long as originally predicted. When we tried to order more our suppliers told us it was unlikely to be in before the end of the month.

@SirChing

I would be very surprised if PHE haven't modelled all the possible scenarios with all the variables and know the precise times to bring in certain measures for maximum effect at minimum cost to life.

Yes, you've summed it up perfectly.

WouldShouldCould · 12/03/2020 09:07

Why are people surprised that the Italy numbers are doubling? It can take 14 days for the virus to develop and they have only just gone into lockdowns. So 14 days from the start of the lockdowns things should start to ease. Currently those in lockdown are incubating the virus. Italy, like us, started taking things seriously too late.

Horehound · 12/03/2020 09:08

Yes, yes, yes @Sunshinegirl82

Greenbutterlfy566 · 12/03/2020 09:08

Ofwarren, thanks. Would it be worth doing it now or has that ship sailed?

DirtyDancing · 12/03/2020 09:08

@WaterSheep this is the absolute crux of it. Getting advice. Ignore. Do own thing.

IrmaFayLear · 12/03/2020 09:09

I suppose one of the problems of closing schools is that not all pupils are MN dcs, diligently working on a personal translation of Proust whilst off, or making salt dough figures in a homely kitchen. There will be a body of kids roaming the streets, getting into mischief or spending more time with undesirables, causing trouble for the police. I can imagine that the powers that be have considered that we might need some kind of curfew action.

middleager · 12/03/2020 09:09

Would and why are people surprised by even the suggestion that we will be in Italy's shoes soon?

WaterSheep · 12/03/2020 09:09

DirtyDancing

Sorry, which post of mine are you referring to?

I would think we have some of the best epidemiologists in the world who do know their stuff.

How long does it take test results to come out?

Are the results we’ll see at 2pm today from people tested this week or last week?

When are the 1500 tests a day increasing to 10,000 as I thought I’d read?

Woman on the bus complaining the world has gone mad and that her daughters school won't let her attend as she's unwell. Nothing specific symptom wise. And the woman is coughing into her hand Hmm
My throat is worse today and my chest feels as tight as it was, still headachey and am staying on the sofa again today. College tomorrow? Who knows! I'm calling at the shops on the way home to see what the stock is like and getting whatever we might need.

WhatHoJeeves · 12/03/2020 09:12

I'm new to Mumsnet and have been lurking on these threads since the beginning as there was (amongst the bickering and a few OTT end of world predictions!) a lot of great information and adult discussion.

But ... it now seems to have descended into a constant and pointless circle of a) 'The government are idiots/arrogant to the point of killing us all' or b) 'The govt and advisers know better than us and we should trust them'.

As these two points of view are completely opposed and very unlikely to agree, this thread is getting to be unhelpful at best.

But thank you for spurring me on to be brave and make a first post! 🙂
