If the spread in the UK is not mitigated to lower and spread out the peak load on the NHS,
then this is what you are facing:

Guidelines from SIAARTI (Italian College of Anaesthesia, Analgesia, Resuscitation and Intensive Care)

http://www.siaarti.it/SiteAssets/News/COVID19%20-%20documenti%20SIAARTI/SIAARTI%20-%20Covid19%20-%20Raccomandazioni%20di%20etica%20clinica.pdf

"In a context of grave shortage of medical resources,

the allocation criteria need to guarantee that those patients with the highest chance of therapeutic success will retain access to intensive care".
.....
"It may become necessary to establish an age limit for access to intensive care",
.....
"This is not a value judgments but a way to provide extremely scarce resources to those who have the highest likelihood of survival

and could enjoy the largest number of life-years saved".
....
""In addition to age, the presence of comorbidities needs to be carefully evaluated.
It is conceivable that what might be a relatively short treatment course in healthier people could be longer and more resource-consuming in the case of older or more fragile patients."

Trump. Now he's something special, banning travel from some European countries, the ones with 'freedom' of movement but not the UK or Ireland who actually so still have freedom of movement for Europeans.
Makes NO sense.

fedup21 · 12/03/2020 09:13

Couldn’t teachers contribute £2

Please don’t put the blame of this on teachers.

Juancornetto · 12/03/2020 09:14

@alloutoffucks can you point me to where the government have said they want most people to get the virus?

Sunshinegirl82 · 12/03/2020 09:15

I also think it's important to remember that the WHO is giving out advice to every county. It is not specific to us.

There are countries that claim to have no cases and are not really testing. I would suggest that the WHO is keen to see more action from those governments.

The idea that the UK is doing nothing apart from washing their hands just isn't true. I understand that it would feel better if something was happening but the CMO and PHE have said time and time again that the timing of further measures is crucial.

It is clearly not the right time in their view.

BigChocFrenzy · 12/03/2020 09:16

"Soap wasn’t in our delivery this week-they didn’t have any, so it wasn’t delivered. How is that fucking stupid and irrespective of us?"

Then the head immediately sends a member of staff to the supermarket to buy some

Whether that be bars of soap or liquid

This is an emergency, not time to hoard the bloody petty cash

ofwarren · 12/03/2020 09:16

I know what you mean @whathojeeves
It's just backwards and forwards with the same disagreement at the moment.

you can get soap in any shop. Bar soap is v cheap. Couldn’t teachers contribute £2

Locally at least soap is in short supply in regular shops. In addition to this, if we could buy from regular shops the amount needed would exceed the limits they have imposed.

nannybeach · 12/03/2020 09:17

IrmaFayLear, I like your style, of course, one if the schools are closed, a great deal of say medical staff with younger children wont get to work, the kids teenagers whose parents still go to work, are going to go out meet friends as usual, wont stop gatherings. There will with all viruses people who are carriers but themselves asymptomatic a lot will get it so mildy they wont even know. This will provide a "herd immunity", closing down big events will only slow or postpone bigger outbreaks, which could be over with more quickly. You cant get soap in any shop, Superdrug branch in Lewis yesterday, no bars of soap, liquid soap, or hand gels, the whole shelf was bare.

ofwarren · 12/03/2020 09:18

greenbutterfly
It's still flu season so yes, I'd say have it.
Bear in mind if it's their first flu vaccine, they will need to have 2
You also have to have it done at the doctors if you are under 18.

"if we could buy from regular shops the amount needed would exceed the limits they have imposed."

The head phones up the supermarket manager (who may check with head office)
to explain they are a school and that limit will not apply

Horehound · 12/03/2020 09:19

@Juancornetto to be clear it's not that the government WANT us to get it. They just expect we will.

Laniakea · 12/03/2020 09:19

you can get a pack of 24 bar soaps for £18 delivered tomorrow from amazon. Some of this is learned helplessness.

Parker231 · 12/03/2020 09:19

If schools shut soon as being forecast, how quickly will services and the economy grind to a halt as parents are at home caring for their DC’s? Less working parents able to go to work in hospitals, shops, transport, GP’s etc.

woodencoffeetable · 12/03/2020 09:20

don't schools have access to wholesalers? Macros?

imo it's a very basic that the school has hand soap and working dryers/paper towels.
schools that don't have that are failing their pupils even when not in an epidemic situation like this.

BigChocFrenzy · 12/03/2020 09:20

There seems to be little initiative or effort to overcome minor difficulties in taking preventative measures

MarshaBradyo · 12/03/2020 09:21

Sunshine I agree it’s a good video. I watched it yesterday and felt the same and thought timing is key. I woke to hear Trump doing a good Independence Day impression with the we and strong measures and I thought why are we so different.

But it was fleeting, now it’s more wait and see.

fedup21 · 12/03/2020 09:22

That world o meter site with the numbers on has shown several countries over the last few days go ahead of us in numbers from out of nowhere.

Is that the government’s policy of ‘wash your hands, everything is fine’ working? Is that validation for Boris that he’s doing the right thing?

Or are we testing less than them?

Dramalamaindeed · 12/03/2020 09:22

If Boris announces that’s schools will close as part of the delay phase, do you think this will apply to Scotland or will we manage our own phases/closures?

BigChocFrenzy · 12/03/2020 09:23

"Some of this is learned helplessness."

Precisely

Laniakea · 12/03/2020 09:23

There seems to be little initiative or effort to overcome minor difficulties

^ welcome to the great British public! It's always someone else's fault, it's always someone else's job & initiative & personal responsibility are frowned on.

Wetcappuccino · 12/03/2020 09:24

@QueenofmyPrinces Yes - I agree. I think that’s what we will have to do. Just have to wait and see...

I was queuing in Tesco click and collect. (No pasta). Youngish guy had collected his shopping and was now applying gel.

Now, when I apply gel, I just give it a quick rub. He took about a minute and gave his hands a thorough rub, backs of nails, between the fingers.

I was very impressed and have modified accordingly.
