As COVID-19 puts pressure on services doctors will have to work differently for their patients. The UK CMOs, medical director NHS, Royal Colleges and GMC are clear that in emergencies doctors must be supported to work in new and unfamiliar ways. This letter is for all doctors. t.co/jDVvZR0iLs

NaturalBornWoman because the govt can't stop it and would rather we all got it in the spring /summer as the nhs is better able to cope. Also due to less severe outcomes it is better to get it under 10years (providing you gain some immunity)
They obviously want it all to stop and dissappear but as that is not going to happen they are allowing it to spread with the (possibly misguided idea) that we will get herd immunity.

Lumene · 12/03/2020 10:09

Yes unverified terrifying material is of no help to anyone.

WouldShouldCould · 12/03/2020 10:10

Also the government does not care about you as a person, they care about the UK population but that is very different.

Random18 · 12/03/2020 10:11

BiBi just schools in Reading? There has been absolutely no indication from our school that they are planning to close.

Listening to the chancellor this morning I didn't get the impression it was going to happen.

Sassenach85 · 12/03/2020 10:14

My ds is due his one year vaccinations at end of apri start of may..... haven’t had a letter yet but it’s making me feel anxious thinking about it. Will there be anyone available by then to do it? Will he be safe going in a gp surgery? Will he have side effects? Confused

Nearlyalmost50 · 12/03/2020 10:17

I think this is one reason that the gov't has put all covid-19 testing through 111 and not doctors surgeries- as they will need to continue to provide the services like vaccinations and prescriptions otherwise people will die through those being neglected. 111 isn't ideal as it gives out crap advice on occasion, but it's better than the surgeries being overwhelmed by requests to test.

Random18 · 12/03/2020 10:19

Sassenach I'm sure it will still be fine. Even if it is delayed by a few weeks he'll be ok.

I know when my DS was due his, he was constantly not well. Gp advised us to let him get over the bug before he got them. They can be a bit grotty after the MMR.

I think they like them to be in good health?

Matt Hancock in HoC last night making announcement to MPs was pretty specific that schools would not be closing, and in fact fuck all would be happening in terms of any action. I'll be staggered if that's swung round 180 overnight. Even the mention of 'in 10-14 days people with respiratory symptoms should isolate' (which is in real terms going to be highly unrealistic to achieve and probably more disruptive to daily life than basic social distancing measures) hadn't picked up on the time slip since they first announced it and was STILL 10-14 days instead 8-12, which doesn't inspire much confidence that it was anything more than another vague idea of something that may happen at some unspecified point in a vague future after a lot more meetings. Possibly.

Stand by for more handwashing. I hope I'm wrong and they will start listening to the WHO, but I suspect more handwashing and a few vague mentions of 'things that may be considered at some point' will be as drastic as it gets. They are clearly going for the plan of widespread infection and hope for herd immunity, they're doing bugger all in any other direction.

BiBiBirdie · 12/03/2020 10:29

@Random18 no idea. Our Headteacher has been amazing through this, daily updates to keep our minds at rest, teachers with even minor illness told to stay home for a fortnight, Parents told if your child is unwell with anything, stay home and if you want to keep kids off with underlying issues, that's been fine too. The school has been cleaning hourly on high traffic areas, door handles, handrails, the loos and special assemblies regarding handwashing and the likes. Instant detention for those taking the piss out of it.
I think with COBRA meeting at midday we will inevitably (hopefully) have BJ admit we have missed our chance weeks back for contain, and are now delay erring towards 3rd stage.
I still say if non essential travel had of been stopped at Half Term we would have caught it out quickly. Instead lots of people went abroad and brought it back. Up until Half Term there was 9 cases who had recovered. Now look.
I think we need to prepare for all schools to be shut from tomorrow.

Oakmaiden · 12/03/2020 10:30

It's also interesting that Italy locked down and the numbers still seem to be increasing.

This is because of the incubation period and delay before symptoms are shown and people get tested. It is estimated (based on Wuhan figures) that the number of people diagnosed daily will go up for about 12-14 days after lockdown is imposed, because these people have already been infected before the lockdown happened.

Which is why sooner is better. Because (for example) a lockdown today would mean would mean our peak number of cases is about 1200 a day, whilst leaving it another week would potentially be 5000+ a day. The numbers get seriously big the longer you leave it. Of course, that is assuming a 23% growth rate (doubling every 3 days which seems typical) and a complete lockdown. We are not guaranteed to see either - the rise in numbers could be slightly slower, but I suspect we won't do a proper lockdown and so the decrease in numbers of cases will be slower too.

Excellent
That's what all heads should be organising

middleager · 12/03/2020 10:44

Bibi Your head's actions are refreshing.

I do, however, think there will be a lot of frustrated people following the Cobra statement.

I do not think he will announce school closures, certainly not after last night's HoC meeting which made it clear where priorities stand: handwashing.

Matt Hancock's response to questions re schools "no full school closures" and the Liverpool/Madrid match/St Patrick's Day parade (maybe best described as a shrug?) in Birmingham was very clear.

Delatron · 12/03/2020 10:51

I don’t think they will close the schools or ban large gatherings.

The self isolating thing if you have a cold is too wishy washy to have any impact.

They are just going to let this virus play out I think.

middleager · 12/03/2020 10:54

I have a meeting later with work's 'Coronavirus team'.

All of them, including the boss, continue to minimise this.

Most of them have not really followed this (one asked this week if I'd bought any extra food and asked why people were stockpiling. No idea the virus can stay on surfaces etc).

The boss will be informed, but seems to be taking the Matt Hancock "nothing to see here" approach.

Can anyone help with a few responses (data/evidence driven) to:

"It's a fuss over nothing. People love the drama"
"It's just the flu"
"The media is sensationalising this. It's not that bad"
"If people just wash their hands we'll be fine"
"It's only old people and those with underlying health issues"
"The Govt knows what its doing - listen to the experts"
"What makes you think we'll be anything like Italy in two weeks?
"It's business as usual"
"Things will be back to jormal soon"
"Summer will kill this off"
"I'm still going away at Easter"

cologne4711 · 12/03/2020 10:56

I went to a business lunch yesterday and we were on a very long table about a metre apart (slight exaggeration but it was noticeable that there was more space between us).

cologne4711 · 12/03/2020 10:57

teachers with even minor illness told to stay home for a fortnight

I think this is too much for a minor cold. DS' college is saying 7 days for its lecturers.

Despite all the handwashing, everyone I know has a cold. Maybe because it keeps raining and you get wet and a chill.

middleager · 12/03/2020 10:59

Cologne did you hear the Shadow Health Minister's comment about the Hoc catering at meetings and people helping themselves to sausage rolls with fingers as no tongs available?

This is why I don't do buffets at the best of times.

SisterAgatha · 12/03/2020 11:21

I don’t get why people think the media have the power to make Italian ministers out the entire country on lockdown, make Trump ban flights from Europe and makes banks give mortgage breaks.

BiBiBirdie · 12/03/2020 11:27

We are so lucky to have her @BigChocFrenzy

Fourducksate · 12/03/2020 11:33

Ireland taking good decisions. Let’s hope we follow.

Freezingold · 12/03/2020 11:34

@NaturalBornWoman I have challenged the assumption about the reasons for the governments strategy and that point specifically. This thread is just moving too fast!

Freezingold · 12/03/2020 11:35

@Fourducksate which decisions in Ireland? Apart from parades, nothing.
