I advised the TA of my daughter's school to go off sick as she had a lung condition. Tomorrow a bus load of kids come back to our village from a school trip (they've been told to self isolate but people are so blasé around here I'm not sure), Cheltenham festival is down the road and our Borough has had it's first confirmed case.

BigChocFrenzy · 11/03/2020 20:12

Whitty said before that he expected to see 50% of cases occuring over just a 3-week period

I expect - since the government probably has a sadly realistic estimate of how long the Uk public will tolerate any measures restricting their "fun" -

that the tough measures will be reserved for the critical period around that time

alloutoffucks · 11/03/2020 20:12

They think vulnerable people should just take responsibility and self isolate if they want to. While ignoring that a lot of those vulnerable people actually work.

MarshaBradyo · 11/03/2020 20:12

Thanks for new thread

middleager · 11/03/2020 20:12

Sunshine Grin

We will go down as the nation that washed hands and talked about meetings.

Watford MP after kissing MH's arse reminded us all to wash our hands. Like a CBeebies programme.

Sunshinegirl82 · 11/03/2020 20:13

Chris Whitty confirmed that for a virus of this type closing schools was not effective in slowing the spread.

Based on that I doubt any widespread school closures are likely, certainly anytime soon.

YoursTunbridgeWells · 11/03/2020 20:13

I do hope the think posted on the last thread about the Italian ICUs is an over-exaggeration. If not, it's already as bad as I had suggested and there is a pretty high bar to get on a ventilator.

Ciwirocks · 11/03/2020 20:13

As well as Cheltenham Liverpool have just welcomed 3000 Madrid fans despite their being a bit outbreak in Madrid 🤦🏼‍♀️. Boris wants to get this over and done with and he doesn’t care how many people die in the process.

Floooy174 · 11/03/2020 20:13

The back of my hands are killing me with all this washing

BigChocFrenzy · 11/03/2020 20:13

imo, schools won't be closed unless we face catastrophe,
because it would damage the economy so badly it would take many years to get back to where we started

That's not putting money before people:
it's thinking about people, but over the next few years, not just the next few weeks

YoursTunbridgeWells · 11/03/2020 20:14

Chris Whitty confirmed that for a virus of this type closing schools was not effective in slowing the spread.

Do we know what he has based this on? Just that there have been plenty of links that show that lockdown is really effective.

ofwarren · 11/03/2020 20:14

Growing number of people self-isolate after meeting MP with coronavirus t.co/9K9C5LezWH

This Nadine Dorries thing is a shambles.

Denmark is closed down. Schools, colleges, universities . all non essential workers to work from home where possible No clubs, pubs hobbies etc....

BigChocFrenzy · 11/03/2020 20:14

However, parents should be allowed to keep DC home if they wish

  • it would relieve some political pressure and calm things down
Kuponut · 11/03/2020 20:15

I kind of think in Boris head Boris thinks he's some kind of Dettol-fuelled Churchill...keeping calm and carrying on while the world quarantines and "we shall fight them on the beaches with soap, water and bog roll and hand sanitizer"

alloutoffucks · 11/03/2020 20:15

@Sunshinegirl82 I will listen to WHO, not him.

Michelleoftheresistance · 11/03/2020 20:15

Judging by that hour of bumbling vagueries I'll guess that the emergency legislation is going to be more focused on protecting their necks when a furious electorate are in the middle of an utter shit show than on trying to protect said electorate.

TheGodWorm · 11/03/2020 20:15

Latest video from Prof Neil Ferguson at Imperial. It's 4 mins long. He talks about options for dealing with coronavirus.

ofwarren · 11/03/2020 20:15

@YoursTunbridgeWells
Exactly.
Why are so many other countries making the decision to do that, but we aren't?
Is he saying that all the countries that are, are wrong?

OP posts:
nellodee · 11/03/2020 20:15

Now I'm getting pissed off. Come on, government, if you're following the science, show us the peer reviewed papers you are basing your response on. This isn't some secret war against the Nazis, the Coronavirus can't read and know what you have against it. Show us the research or prepare for a backlash like you have never fucking seen in your lives if you put our families at risk.

Do NOT think we will not be comparing our country's deaths against every other country that chose to follow "different" science to you.

Do NOT think we will forgive you if you let our loved ones die unnecessarily.

MmeAlice · 11/03/2020 20:16

We have 514 cases with a pop og 5.6 million, therefore drastic action required to slow rate. Statsminister Meete Frederiksen holding press meeting now.

Mordred · 11/03/2020 20:16

@YoursTunbridgeWells

That was my post - it was indeed sent by a friend in Milan. I bloody well hope it's over-exaggerated, but he's a pretty level-headed bloke.

TheBenefitsPeople · 11/03/2020 20:17

Who is going to teach and support the children when the staff come down with the virus or are caring for members of their families that have? I'll just tell DH and MIL to die quietly?

MmeAlice · 11/03/2020 20:17

Denmark taking hard and fast action.

Kuponut · 11/03/2020 20:17

I also suspect that when they pass the powers to raise class sizes they will never fully go back down to their current limits and it'll be testing the water for mega classes in upper primary and secondary at least
