Yes I read that Bloomberg article. My issue is that it says that basically everyone will get it anyway. But WHO is saying that is not inevitable at all if measures are put into place.
So who do I believe? Boris? Or the international experts at WHO?

emsy86 · 11/03/2020 20:24

suppose so long as they make up the 2k the pp is happy with what a disgusting think to suggest im happy with that amount of deaths... some of you on here no matter how many people will die will say the government should have done more to stop it.

Do you know a number im not happy with?? 6507 deaths! that was how many people committed suicide in the UK last year! was that debated every day on the news? no is wasn't was 30billion pounds invested in getting that figure down? no it wasn't. there are many other worse killers that dont get a mention or dont close the country down its is ridiculous to think this virus is the be all and end all.

suicide 6507
road deaths 1784
murder 774
cancer 163444 [ 2016]

These are figures of other deaths last year in the UK sometimes people need to think and realise that with more funding etc these figures could also massively drop.

Mordred · 11/03/2020 20:24

I just want to know why we can't do what Poland is doing right now to contain things.

And for contrast:

Poland: 6.62 beds/1000 population
UK: 2.54/1000

SansaSnark · 11/03/2020 20:25

@Bearbehind Denmark has a land border with Germany, which may have something to do with their rapidly increasing numbers of cases.

Proportionally, they are also able to test more people.

The number of new cases they are finding each day does seem to suggest that there may already have been community transmission before they really started testing- which would explain the rapid increase in cases in a short amount of time.

I do think we are in a different situation to some countries, where not enough testing was done early on, and there is now a lot of community transmission already.

I still don't believe that coronavirus is widespread in the UK yet- but given the number of people we have had coming in and out of Italy since half term, I do believe that we won't be able to contain the spread very much much longer, and community transmission is clearly becoming more common.

FacingtheAbess · 11/03/2020 20:25

Announcement, Chris witty.

' its an official pandemic. Some measures are eu friends take are, closing borders, issuing flight cards, testing everyone they can, closing schools with a case, implementing rings of barriers, stopping visiting to old folks home's, stopping mass gatherings over 1000 people, stopping football matches, race meets.
I want to reassure the great British public, we are taking no such measures. We will follow our own brand of science, and keep buggering on, with everything we normally do in the face of this pesky virus.

Don't worry. Schools won't close, yes, staff maybe thin on the ground, yes hospitals may not admit you, yes life may seem different. We Ask you to follow our science, wash your hands and keep buggering on ''

Eeyoresstickhouse · 11/03/2020 20:25

I have taken out the company emblem for privacy purposes but my workplace is strictly following the wash your hands mantra. They are following the phe advice to the letter and we have a confirmed case on site.

There has been no mention of working from home, no mention of anything except wash your bloody hands.

Skybluepink123 · 11/03/2020 20:26

It is utterly disgusting how the politicians seem to be playing with people’s lives. How can football matches go ahead like Liverpool v Milan? Why are we simply being told almost on loop to wash our hands? Surely the government should be doing more. How will the extra NHS money from the budget be spent to save lives? They’re not going to magic ICU beds out of thin air! I have 3 disabled children plus an infirm DM and I’m now getting really scared.

NeckPainChairSearch · 11/03/2020 20:26

Come on, government, if you're following the science, show us the peer reviewed papers you are basing your response on

Show us the research or prepare for a backlash like you have never fucking seen in your lives if you put our families at risk

Do NOT think we will not be comparing our country's deaths against every other country that chose to follow "different" science to you

This. This. This.

nellodee · 11/03/2020 20:27

Has anyone, anywhere, ever read a piece of peer reviewed research that shows school closures are ineffective?

YoursTunbridgeWells · 11/03/2020 20:28

So who do I believe? Boris? Or the international experts at WHO?

It does seem that the UK is floating in denial or perhaps MPs think WHO are doomongering idiots or perhaps they have reims of unshared science which backs up their plans.

It seems Parliament have voted economically here and have decided to play a game of roulette with the lives of the vulnerable with ever decreasing odds with each day of delay on social distancing.

Chris Whitty may come out of this looking like a fool. I sincerely hope not. Maybe Monday is the day for change.... I can but hope

alloutoffucks · 11/03/2020 20:28

I guess telling people to wash your hands again and again costs nothing and does not affect rich people's wealth.

Kuponut · 11/03/2020 20:28

I also am now wondering if the hand washing as the only strategy is setting up for a victim blaming defence when deaths do occur - it's that line from Boris that he didn't need testing because he washes his hands lots... Whereas Doris from Grimsby who dies from the virus and an overstretched NHS... If only people listened and washed their hands more....

middleager · 11/03/2020 20:30

Eeyores employers are reckless if you can WFH and they won't let you.

My colleagues are careless, I have a son with asthma and if push came to shove my son comes before my job.

Bearbehind · 11/03/2020 20:30

I don’t understand this insistence that we’re not testing enough people, our positive to negative testing ratio is 0.017%

Bearing in mind we’re only testing those with specific symptoms, how many more cases do people realistically think are out there?

yolofish · 11/03/2020 20:30

Catching up, haven't RTFT.

So, all we are to do is wash our hands and hope for the best according to our govt?

Some cross party talks tomorrow and then a COBRA meeting next week?

Where is any sense of urgency?

That's really going to work well.

GoodDogBellaBoo · 11/03/2020 20:30

All schools, preschools, universities, libraries etc will be closing in Denmark from Monday. Recommendation is that even bars should close.

nellodee · 11/03/2020 20:31

And I also want to see the research that shows that mass gatherings of people have no effect. Because I've -read- the research that showed that you could catch corona by travelling on a bus four hours after a carrier, even if you didn't touch any surfaces they have touched.

Show us this science.

MrsBeeluga · 11/03/2020 20:31

@sansasnark what we are told in denmark, is that the rise compared to other countries is partly due to us have our skiing holidays in week 7-8 lots going to Italy. At the same time we have been testing other areas too, and not just northern italy/China (testing Tyrol now).

That said the Danish attitude has be very relaxed ☹️.

SansaSnark · 11/03/2020 20:31

Yes I agree- if we are following the science then be explicit about the science you are following.

I have yet to see any real evidence to support the government's position.

If Boris Johnson actually said that line about not needing to be tested because of washing his hands enough then he deserves to get Coronavirus and I really do not say that lightly. Does he not understand how aerosol/droplet transmission works?

PhilSwagielka · 11/03/2020 20:32

I wish football matches weren't going ahead. My brother is a season ticket holder at Goodison Park. He had chemo a few years ago and it's weakened his lungs and immune system. He's still going the derby on Monday and I admit I am a bit worried.

alloutoffucks · 11/03/2020 20:32

Kuponot Perhaps, but it won't fly.

@Bearbehind WHO are saying not enough testing is being done. I don't know how much should be done, but if they say more needs to be done, I believe them.

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 11/03/2020 20:32

Checking in.
Thanks for new thread guys.

MarshaBradyo · 11/03/2020 20:33

I guess telling people to wash your hands again and again costs nothing and does not affect rich people's wealth

Whose livelihoods would be most affected by school closures and lock downs? People on the bread line, SME, employees, casual workers, two working families I reckon. The wealthy have buffers that can ride it out in various ways.

Meercat2 · 11/03/2020 20:33

Denmark has closed all schools and universities now. Emergency bill to go through parliament tomorrow

SansaSnark · 11/03/2020 20:33

@MrsBeeluga That is interesting to hear about Denmark- do people drive down through Germany to go skiing or mostly fly?
