Travelling, making other decisions around
exposure

read up, noone can decide for you, but be aware...
Your mode of transport (train/boat/plane) is unlikely to be disinfected.
You may not be welcome back at work (forced isolation unpaid because you decided to take risk)
Getting stuck in quarantine in another country, subjected to their health service and govt restrictions on you.
What happens with your dc and school upon return.
Holiday insurance cover?

Positive ways of coping

Exercise daily, out where you won't be in close proximity (greater than 2 metres)

Eat well, healthy foods, plenty of liquid

Include natural antivirals in diet and good levels of daily vit c

Rest

Take steps to address any raised anxiety, above what might be reasonable and normal steps for keeping viral hygiene under control.
Its normal to feel more anxious, and normal to take steps to manage situation by being well prepared.

Isolation Issues

Getting sufficient shopping in on low incomes, and/or vulnerable / already isolated

Keeping on top of KEY METERS - need to top up yet in isolation - what measures are there to help

Paying mortgage/rent (private & housing associations) if not receiving sick pay

Legislation that enforced isolation = sick (for sick pay purposes)

       *********,

Primary mode of transmission is airborne droplets.

Sneeze or cough into elbow (or tissue and bin it). Droplets can travel 2m.

Secondary means of transmission touch.

Hand wash to
Break the transmission cycle from hand to mouth, eyes, nose, or to others, by 20 seconds plus thorough hand washing (soap and water).

Alcohol breaks down the outer layer of virus to effectively kill, other methods may not.
(Anti bacterial does NOT do this and overuse may risk bacterial resistance).

Use 2/3rds vol alcohol to any other additive

Huh that would almost be amusing if trump meets his demise by the virus he claimed was a hoax

PotholeParadise · 09/03/2020 22:56

If you thought Trump could comprehend exponential growth before this week, I have a bridge to sell you. Grin

I'm not too sure that Johnson could draw a graph of exponential growth either. He would probably ask Carrie to do it and then say it was all his own work.

SunburstsOrMarbleHalls · 09/03/2020 22:58

Just watched some of the US press conference with Trump and Pence. No facts, figures or science just lots of waffle without anything informative being said at all. Am hoping that the advice, data and projections were communicated to the US public after SKY news cut away from the broadcast.

mrshoho · 09/03/2020 22:59

Wish I could give you reassurance Dramalamaindeed. The positive is you have insurance in place but sincerely hope you still get to have the Wedding you've planned Flowers

DonkeyKong2019 · 09/03/2020 22:59

Johnson probably could. Trump no chance!

PotholeParadise · 09/03/2020 22:59

So if something happens to Trump, they get Pence. If something happens to Pence, don't they get Nancy Pelosi in charge?

Wehttam · 09/03/2020 22:59

Evening all. Watching the Press conference President Trump just gave and the following speakers, there is an absolute total change in tone. The US it would seem, is at last taking this situation seriously. We can only hope that the UK follows suit.

Hard decisions need to be made now, close our borders immediately and go on full countrywide lockdown as Italy has. Do it now before we get to the stage Italy is at where they have done it as an emergency response.

There is no scaremongering anymore, the cat is out of the bag, US just stated that over 60s and those with underlying health issues are at high risk of severe illness or death. We MUST act now. BoJo if you’re looking in on this thread, please lock us down!

FusspotsMum · 09/03/2020 23:01

The U.K. is where Italy was about 12 days ago in terms of numbers, but will we go up as quickly?

Optimistically it would be nice to believe we have a couple things in our favour:
No land borders so less unchartered transmission...
No clear epicentres of cases... could be that having an epicentre to the disease (like in China and Italy) fans the flames...

tryingtoprep · 09/03/2020 23:07

@Wettham So even the US is taking it more seriously than us? Does Boris think we're special here in the UK? We won't be the same as everywhere else? I wonder, I wasn't a fan, but if Theresa May was still PM would we have seen a better response? As she herself is over 60 and with an underlying condition? Boris had the arrogance of good health and (relative) youth?

SadThing · 09/03/2020 23:09

Why have Barcelona Council cancelled the Marathon on March 15th but are skill allowing Spannabis (with 30k attendees) to go ahead within the city??

Newjez · 09/03/2020 23:14

Boris didn't look very well on the TV. Probably just stress I'm sure.

TokyoSushi · 09/03/2020 23:14

I honestly think our government believes that huge numbers of infections and a much higher death toll is something that happens to other people/countries.

Its like we're being given a glimpse into the future and are saying 'nah, won't happen.'

The next few days are going to be very interesting.

AbsentmindedWoman · 09/03/2020 23:15

Relieved that Trump mentioned payouts for hourly workers, following on from what NYC (and I think California) are doing. I hope it will be equal to whatever an individual's average paycheck is.

This will really help with quarantine compliance in the gig economy sector.

Wehttam · 09/03/2020 23:15

trying let’s see what happens tomorrow, Trump made his move, will BoJo follow?

I would be slightly more reassured with TM as PM but there’s no use crying over spilled milk.

Unless decisive action takes place soon then people are going to start getting restless and tempers WILL flare once the herd realises summer holidays this year are well and truly off the table and the economy starts haemorrhaging jobs en masse.

MaxNormal · 09/03/2020 23:16

Boris had the arrogance of good health and (relative) youth?

A very fat fifty-five year old? Hardly! Not disagreeing on the arrogance part mind you.

Furfockssake · 09/03/2020 23:21

Bojo and the UK Government have said on multiple occasions they are following the advice of scientists, and won't make any changes until they are advised by the CMO that it's the right time. We are a country with a clear (although not fully prepared) pandemic plan, and we are following it. This situation has been modelled many times, and they have already said that social distancing measures will have a better effect if we wait a bit longer.

Freezingold · 09/03/2020 23:21

What would be the best way of disinfecting and storing fresh goods brought in from outside?

Me too. It is probably, hopefully low risk. The amount of people handling something is important isn’t it? Correct me anyone if I’m wrong.
Public toilet door handles = 100s of people
Groceries = ? A few? I guess I’d wipe down things I’d might touch often, cereal boxes with dettol wipes. Put the rest away, and then wash my hands. And then wash hands after preparing food? And rinse all fruit and veg.

AbsentmindedWoman · 09/03/2020 23:21

A large chunk of America is taking this very seriously and has been for a while. I am not American, I just live here.

I've posted a few updates on how things are progressing here, and local government in different states are doing what they can with a view to slowing down the rate of infection.

You don't see this on news outside the US unless you look for it, you just see Trump doing the Trump thing.

Disclaimer: I'm not talking about the rabid Christian types such as the televangeliser who is trying to make a quick buck selling some holy potion to cure Covid 19. Or the other similar one who has announced, in all seriousness, this is all the fault of gay folks for their sinful lives.

Just want to point out that our air/sea borders are not being checked at all for fevers etc, so there isn't actually going to be less uncharted transmission.

And there is a clear epicentre - London. Not only does it have the highest number of actual cases, but many of the cases radiating out from it (eg Hertfordshire) will be people who have commuted into work in London and caught/spread the virus there.

Langbannedforsafeguardingkids · 09/03/2020 23:30

Boris has the arrogance of many public schoolboys. He has been brought up in the belief - only ever reinforced - that he is in the position he is in (with wealth and power) because he is special, better than everyone else and immune from all the ills of the hoi polloi.

COVID-19 is going to be a nasty shock I think.

compulsiveliar2019 · 09/03/2020 23:37

I'm a self employed carer working with some quiet vulnerable clients. I would like there to be more information and advice as to how to protect them. What level of precautions should I be taking.
I would also like to see some supplies made available to us.
This evening I tried to buy a thermometer to screen clients for a fever before having contact with them. There are none available anywhere. Ditto hand sanitizer, gloves and other ppe.

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 09/03/2020 23:39

That is not true Ofwaren.
People are going to work as usual. The shops will be open.
Even if it were true, which it obviously could never be "no movement" would be obviously unenforceable.
The hyperbole and absurd over-dramatisation by journos is scandalous.
We're in a bad enough way without people like James Mates getting his clickbait exaggerations in as well.
I've just spent the last 3 hours talking online to 10 classes of confused, disoriented and now, a bit scared, teenagers so journos posting lies for dramatic effect can fuck off.

compulsiveliar2019 when my relative was having carers, we bought all that stuff ourselves for them to use (gloves, thermometer, wipes). Pretty bad if you have to get it- can your agency help? I think the fate of carers and the elderly who depend on them is going to be one of the worst things about this outbreak, because carers are on low pay and don't get paid if they don't work, and if they get sick there are not enough spare carers to go around. Elderly people will die for other reasons than corona during this corona outbreak due to diverted attention and health-care and a lack of carers.
