Travelling, making other decisions around
exposure

read up, noone can decide for you, but be aware...
Your mode of transport (train/boat/plane) is unlikely to be disinfected.
You may not be welcome back at work (forced isolation unpaid because you decided to take risk)
Getting stuck in quarantine in another country, subjected to their health service and govt restrictions on you.
What happens with your dc and school upon return.
Holiday insurance cover?

Positive ways of coping

Exercise daily, out where you won't be in close proximity (greater than 2 metres)

Eat well, healthy foods, plenty of liquid

Include natural antivirals in diet and good levels of daily vit c

Rest

Take steps to address any raised anxiety, above what might be reasonable and normal steps for keeping viral hygiene under control.
Its normal to feel more anxious, and normal to take steps to manage situation by being well prepared.

Isolation Issues

Getting sufficient shopping in on low incomes, and/or vulnerable / already isolated

Keeping on top of KEY METERS - need to top up yet in isolation - what measures are there to help

Paying mortgage/rent (private & housing associations) if not receiving sick pay

Legislation that enforced isolation = sick (for sick pay purposes)

       *********,

Primary mode of transmission is airborne droplets.

Sneeze or cough into elbow (or tissue and bin it). Droplets can travel 2m.

Secondary means of transmission touch.

Hand wash to
Break the transmission cycle from hand to mouth, eyes, nose, or to others, by 20 seconds plus thorough hand washing (soap and water).

Alcohol breaks down the outer layer of virus to effectively kill, other methods may not.
(Anti bacterial does NOT do this and overuse may risk bacterial resistance).

Use 2/3rds vol alcohol to any other additive

From 26th Feb

Jane Merrick @janemerrick23
Extraordinary side point on coronavirus that’s just been brought to my attention: after Nicola Blackwood was sacked in reshuffle, there is now no dedicated health minister in the Lords. A government whip, Lord Bethell, will give a statement on covid19 today instead.

This matters because the Lords is packed full of expertise on health, local govt and other areas that are important on big public health crises like this. They are now asking questions of a whip who presumably won’t be going to all the coronavirus meetings.

Am told that there is also now no local government minister in the Lords. What is going on?

Today

Jane Merrick @janemerrick23
Update on this: I asked no10 at lunchtime why there was no dedicated health minister in the Lords since the reshuffle. This evening they’ve announced that Lord Bethell has been promoted to health minister.

Bethell was formerly a govt whip and was already doing coronavirus statements and answering peers’ questions. But good to know the Lords now has a dedicated health minister again

Jesus wept.

Flowersop your doing a grand job thank you Daffodil

Red,
The guardian article about symptoms was really interesting!

I can't repost it, I hope it didn't get lost at the end of the last thread.

Re Italy hand washing

Good question, can anyone tell us.. Also did China get the hand washing?

Re interpreting isolation I totally understand, but where I am, I know where on packed summer days places I could walk and barley see another soul and certainly not in close proximity... Even nt places with some crowded areas, in height of summer have many quiet corners

Horehound · 09/03/2020 21:52

I guess I skin read it @WaterSheep and that it makes no sense for public events, personal plans etc to be cancelled if you still have to go and liaise with folk at work Confused
It's a bit like "do your work but don't have fun"

Pffff

BigChocFrenzy · 09/03/2020 21:53

We will see in Italy - maybe later in the UK - the price of democracy and "should"

Will common sense and civic duty win out for most people ?
There'll always be a minority who cba with anything that constrains them

FurForksSake · 09/03/2020 21:53

So the 1.7 million (ish) people that work in tourism in Italy will be stuffed as will everyone working in leisure and sports? They'll be able to go to work but have nothing but admin to do?

Slovakia bans public events, quarantines people returning from coronavirus-affected countries t.co/MZSvaf63uF t.co/nkqwyHSSCZ

usernameishistory · 09/03/2020 21:54

That's one perspective @Horehound

I haven't taken that,.more that there is a lot of worry and concern, and that those wgo can work from home should be to take the load off everywhere else, it will all slow down the rate of infection and load onnoir economy and healthcare for the most vulnerable.

Limited social distancing is much, much better than none at all.

usernameishistory · 09/03/2020 21:56

Perhaps those without actual work can be used for repurposing themselves?

Theres a lot of vounteering needed for example.

How are ppl ‘interpreting’ isolation? There’s nothing to interpret ... isolation is isolation.

Thing in the Guardian earlier from a long time (French) resident of Milan not impressed by the measures as ‘breaking rules is an Italian national pastime’ and there’s no big stick.

UK national pastime seems to be being far to special & important to contribute to any communal protection of the vulnerable, the NHS or the bloody economy!

SistemaAddict · 09/03/2020 21:57

Thank you for the new thread.

I'm stunned about Italy. It seems so surreal that I can't imagine it as true somehow. I know it is but my brain is struggling with what that actually looks like to have a whole country restricted like that.

I've been reading about courts using video links. I have to go to court in a few weeks for a family hearing and I'm wondering if it will still go ahead. By then things might be very different over here.

I am resting lots today and actually had a nap at lunchtime. Unheard of unless I'm really poorly but I was just very sleepy and fell asleep watching tv. I should have gone to bed after the school run but was trying to carry on with numerous jobs around the house whilst catching up on some tv series. I made myself lentil, carrot and celery soup with dumplings for dinner and am taking my inhalers as prescribed. We all need to do whatever we can to keep ourselves healthy.

I've got plenty in the brexit cupboard and boxes but not much in the way of fresh food so I think I'll put an online order in soon. And get making more soup too.

I hope everyone stays safe and well Thanks

BigChocFrenzy · 09/03/2020 21:57

"do your work but don't have fun"

Thats what happens in a national emergency like a pandemic or a war
... or things get even worse

I'm not sure if Italy is ready for this
They are even bolshier than we are

At least closing down all the leisure events - IFF it is enforced - will leave people with not much to go out for

Horehound · 09/03/2020 21:57

But that's just mixing with more people Confused

Horehound · 09/03/2020 21:58

@BigChocFrenzy yes, that's true. Hadn't thought of it like a war situ before

RedToothBrush · 09/03/2020 21:59

Lufthansa have already done similar

www.qantasnewsroom.com.au/media-releases/qantas-group-update-on-coronavirus-response/
QANTAS GROUP UPDATE ON CORONAVIRUS RESPONSE

The Qantas Group has announced further cuts to its international flying, reducing capacity by almost a quarter for the next six months.

And

This approach results in eight of the airline’s largest aircraft, the Airbus A380, grounded until mid-September. A further two A380s are undergoing scheduled heavy maintenance and cabin upgrades, leaving two of its A380s flying.

In response to strong customer demand for the direct Perth-London service, the existing Sydney-Singapore-London return service (QF1 and QF2) will be temporarily re-routed to become a Sydney-Perth-London service from 20 April.

Laniakea · 09/03/2020 21:59

Damn life’s just no fun in a pandemic ... waaaah Hmm

Bearbehind · 09/03/2020 21:59

Perhaps those without actual work can be used for repurposing themselves?

Theres a lot of vounteering needed for example.

Why would people chose to do that now but not previously?

Horehound · 09/03/2020 21:59

Lol well technically it's not a pandemic...yet

Quartz2208 · 09/03/2020 22:00

Sounds like the restaurants etc are going to be in difficultly then

It must be hard for small business owners

AbsentmindedWoman · 09/03/2020 22:01

HIV drug Kaletra has successfully treated a 62 year old man in Spain. Not sure if that was posted already.

It was used in conjunction with another treatment used for MS patients, a protein called interferon beta.

The other drug that shows some hope is Remdesivir, used for Marburg and ebola.

Anyone know anything about these drugs? They sound promising. A bit of hope!

Bearbehind · 09/03/2020 22:02

Realistically though, most people travel to work in rush hour so are far more exposed to germs then than say going out for a meal at night

If people have to commute still, and they do to keep the economy going, they are still going to socialise outside of work

TokyoSushi · 09/03/2020 22:02

Checking in, thank you!
