Travelling, making other decisions around
exposure

read up, noone can decide for you, but be aware...
Your mode of transport (train/boat/plane) is unlikely to be disinfected.
You may not be welcome back at work (forced isolation unpaid because you decided to take risk)
Getting stuck in quarantine in another country, subjected to their health service and govt restrictions on you.
What happens with your dc and school upon return.
Holiday insurance cover?

Positive ways of coping

Exercise daily, out where you won't be in close proximity (greater than 2 metres)

Eat well, healthy foods, plenty of liquid

Include natural antivirals in diet and good levels of daily vit c

Rest

Take steps to address any raised anxiety, above what might be reasonable and normal steps for keeping viral hygiene under control.
Its normal to feel more anxious, and normal to take steps to manage situation by being well prepared.

Isolation Issues

Getting sufficient shopping in on low incomes, and/or vulnerable / already isolated

Keeping on top of KEY METERS - need to top up yet in isolation - what measures are there to help

Paying mortgage/rent (private & housing associations) if not receiving sick pay

Legislation that enforced isolation = sick (for sick pay purposes)

Break the transmission cycle from hand to mouth, eyes, nose, or to others, by 20 seconds plus thorough hand washing (soap and water).

Alcohol breaks down the outer layer of virus to effectively kill, other methods may not.

Tunbridge Wells I have reported your post as it is an outright lie. No consultant would tell you that. It's not true, and if it were, they wouldn't tell you anyway.

YoursTunbridgeWells · 10/03/2020 15:59

If we end up with a massive peak all at one time, it doesn't bear thinking about. I would hate having to make those decisions, especially when overworked in such a high risk position where an accidental slip of mind could mean getting infected. The doctors are the heros.

YoursTunbridgeWells · 10/03/2020 16:00

@cologne4711 It's not an outright lie. I am related to a senior ITU consultant.

Homkaismycat · 10/03/2020 16:01

@cologne4711
Thank you.
It’s absolutely disgusting..
I feel so worried now as what she said...

cologne4711 · 10/03/2020 16:01

It is a lie. No way would they simply write off people with asthma. You may have a higher chance of having complications if you are asthmatic, but that doesn't mean you will be written off if you have it.

Michelleoftheresistance · 10/03/2020 16:02

There was an article yesterday I saw briefly that mentioned something about a strain L, which looked as if they were implying that Italy were dealing with a more virulent strain than other countries might be? Can anyone suggest information about that?

Lynatic · 10/03/2020 16:02

YoursTurnbridgeWells surely asthma isn't something that would mean less chance of successful treatment in ICU

Skyejuly · 10/03/2020 16:03

That is not true RE Asthma

cologne4711 · 10/03/2020 16:03

MIchelle (love the username) I have seen talk of an L strain in Italy and an S strain (in Germany - and maybe here?) and the L strain is more virulent?

YoursTunbridgeWells · 10/03/2020 16:04

I see what you're saying but it's not a lie. Let's say things get really bad and you have one bed left and 2 50 year olds, one with asthma and one without, otherwise both in good health. Who should you give the bed to?

This is how triage works. It's horrible. I really dislike what it means in practice. Ultimately you save as many as possible by diverting your resource to those who are most likely to make it.

MyFirstMyLastMyEverythingBagel · 10/03/2020 16:05

Another long time lurked popping my head out. The testing or apparent lack of is concerning me. We have our first local confirmed case - someone who's son has said they are utterly bemused at how she has contracted the virus as she has limited mobility and does not often leave the house and never mind has recently travelled abroad. No known contact with people who have either. The lady is now in hospital in a critical condition and my thoughts are with her.
So must be community spread which is worrying considering they wont test unless the criteria is met.

tryingtoprep · 10/03/2020 16:06

The link @YoursTunbridgeWells posted is not scaremonging. It's factual information. Doctors in Italy cannot treat every patient who needs care. Not necessarily for Covid. Their hospitals are overwhelmed. There's not enough doctors and nurses to care for all who need it. Bear in mind some of them are ill too.

The purpose of these articles is not to scare people. It's about heeding the warning so that we can prepare. Take action to mitigate. So that hopefully we don't get to the worst case scenario.

People shouldn't panic but they should be concerned enough to take the risks seriously. Falling apart won't help but neither will burying your head in the sand.

Fwiw. It does seem to be lower risk for children getting it badly and I've heard they have separate ICU beds for children but we shouldn't be complacent. We still need to take some measures to better protect all of us.

cjt110 · 10/03/2020 16:08

First case has been reported in my council area. But the area is MASSIVE.. No further detail as to the town/area. I assume that's a given throughout the country - no specifics?

juneybean · 10/03/2020 16:08

myfirst think you must be local, I heard there's a 2nd case in the area but wont find out until the area data comes out.

Delatron · 10/03/2020 16:08

I wonder how long they can continue to deny community spread?

MashedPotatoBrainz · 10/03/2020 16:08

YoursTurnbridgeWells isn't lying. I read it in the papers this morning. They're reporting a twitter thread from a UK doctor reporting what his Italian counterparts are telling him.

twitter.com/jasonvanschoor/status/1237142891077697538

Saucery · 10/03/2020 16:09

This scaremongering is disgusting. You should be ashamed to tell such outrageous and upsetting lies.
There are so many nuances to triage and bollocks does it come down to Has Asthma/Doesn’t Have Asthma.

Michelleoftheresistance · 10/03/2020 16:09

Thank you Cologne I'll look that up. That suggests Italy may be dealing with something more extreme than the UK may be dealing with?

When resources are at absolute breaking point as poor Italy is, it's inevitable that very hard decisions are going to have to be made as to which of those resources are given to which patients based on how ill they are when they present, but it's by no means certain that the UK will be dealing with the level of crisis Italy are in.

ofwarren · 10/03/2020 16:09

Austria closes border with Italy, bans indoor events with more than 100 people, and closes universities to stop the spread of coronavirus - APA

picklemewalnuts · 10/03/2020 16:09

The message from the Italian medic was clear.
They are forced to select who to treat, as there is not enough intensive support for everyone who is ill.
In the original article he said that people with comorbidities are not even being assessed, let alone treated.

This is incredibly serious, which is why people on this thread have been very worried.

It isn't panic. It's an attempt to make people understate significance of the situation, and protect themselves.

Lynatic · 10/03/2020 16:10

I can agree with that. Should also depend on how bad each patient is. If I was a doctor to choose between an astmatic child and an adult in te same condition I would choose the child. They look cute for a reason

Furfockssake · 10/03/2020 16:11

Spain's numbers seem to be accelerating fairly alarmingly.

MurrayTheMonk · 10/03/2020 16:12

I wonder if part of the reason for doing basically nothing is a sort of anti European bias on the part of the government following brexit... is it in some way an extension of 'they can't tell us what to do anymore?' Just trying to understand why lots of other European countries seem now to be taking similar and sensible measures and we just aren't...

RedToothBrush · 10/03/2020 16:13

If there are 16 ventilators and 50 people who need them what are the doctors going to do?

They can not magically produce more ventilators.

They have to decide who has the best chance of survival to make best use of those ventilators.

They have to pick the people who have the least chance of complications and are in the best general health.

The Italian doctors have been making this point all week and there have been comments about how distressing this is for doctors. In Wuhan there was a mental health hotline set up for doctors at the peak there.

Italy has gone in to lock down because of the number of cases they fear they will have in two more weeks and how this will make decisions even harder there.

I'm afraid that this isn't scaremongering. This is what Italian doctors are highlighting and warning the rest of Europe to try and put measures in place to prevent it being as bad elsewhere.

I don't know what else people are expecting. The most doctors are going to be able to offer in that situation is palliative care. If there is a bed available.

There were reports out of Wuhan of families realising the situation as one family member had died after days of trying to get a bed only for them to get worse care than they would have had at home from family, and taking the terrible decision not to go to the hospital with another critically ill elderly family member because they were more comfortable to die at home.

This is the reality of institutional break down of a health care system. That's what the Italians are saying is happening. And they have more critical care beds and resources than the UK.

This is going to get very bad indeed in the UK, and it is going to happen more quickly than in other European countries and from fewer cases because we have less medical capacity.
