Travelling, making other decisions around
exposure

read up, noone can decide for you, but be aware...
Your mode of transport (train/boat/plane) is unlikely to be disinfected.
You may not be welcome back at work (forced isolation unpaid because you decided to take risk)
Getting stuck in quarantine in another country, subjected to their health service and govt restrictions on you.
What happens with your dc and school upon return.
Holiday insurance cover?

Positive ways of coping

Exercise daily, out where you won't be in close proximity (greater than 2 metres)

Eat well, healthy foods, plenty of liquid

Include natural antivirals in diet and good levels of daily vit c

Rest

Take steps to address any raised anxiety, above what might be reasonable and normal steps for keeping viral hygiene under control.
Its normal to feel more anxious, and normal to take steps to manage situation by being well prepared.

Isolation Issues

Getting sufficient shopping in on low incomes, and/or vulnerable / already isolated

Keeping on top of KEY METERS - need to top up yet in isolation - what measures are there to help

Paying mortgage/rent (private & housing associations) if not receiving sick pay

Legislation that enforced isolation = sick (for sick pay purposes)

       <strong>*</strong><strong>*</strong><strong>*</strong><strong>*</strong><strong>*</strong><strong>*</strong><strong>*</strong>**,

Primary mode of transmission is airborne droplets.

Sneeze or cough into elbow (or tissue and bin it). Droplets can travel 2m.

Secondary means of transmission touch.

Hand wash to
Break the transmission cycle from hand to mouth, eyes, nose, or to others, by 20 seconds plus thorough hand washing (soap and water).

Alcohol breaks down the outer layer of virus to effectively kill, other methods may not.
(Anti bacterial does NOT do this and overuse may risk bacterial resistance).

Use 2/3rds vol alcohol to any other additive

I did post this on the last thread - a local drive through testing pod has been set up near me. Still need 111 referral but are there lots of these popping up? Would this mean much bigger testing numbers going forward?

@nellodee I read something similar today about the fact there is a cognitive bias against exponential growth as it's something humans just can't comprehend - we prefer to think in terms of linear growth apparently ...

usernameishistory · 09/03/2020 22:30

@nellodee

Thanks for that, but as I said earlier someone running the states should really have a grasp of exponential !! Hmm

Scarey shit!

Bit more comprehensive than the news-sites. Ars Technica is American, but much of the detail and what-to-do is relevant.

Furfockssake · 09/03/2020 22:31

I do think the message is getting out there in the UK that the numbers are going to start doubling fairly quickly - I think from WHO website that cases outside of China are currently doubling every 4 days.

tryingtoprep · 09/03/2020 22:34

What on earth's going on with the UK, US, and now Australia?! A shared contempt for older people and anyone of any age with preexisting health conditions? Short-termism? Denial with heads buried deep in the sand? Government access to treatment the rest of us don't know about? (Sorry, my last suggestion is going a bit tin foil hat!).

Seems like most other countries round the world are taking this seriously and adopting measures to protect their populations (and long-term economy).

ItIsWhatItIsInnit · 09/03/2020 22:35

Kinda incredulous at those who wonder if quarantine means they can still go for a walk or cycle 80km hmm

I don't think it's a stupid question - I'm pretty sure the Russian government even said that those in self-isolation can still walk their dogs late at night when it's empty.

If you're not going to bump into anyone, the benefit for your mental health (and physical health) is probably worth it.

Then again I don't think most people in this country will be willing to follow any sorts of rules that detriment them. This is a forum of people specifically interested in this topic - most people don't care IRL. Everyone in my company has holidays planned in the next 2 months that they're still going on.

Newleafinspring · 09/03/2020 22:36

Can we at least have old people and people with underlying health problem to stay at home immediately?

nellodee · 09/03/2020 22:37

What risk do elderly people have from the virus surviving on groceries that are delivered to them, do you all think? What would be the best way of disinfecting and storing fresh goods brought in from outside?

AuldAlliance · 09/03/2020 22:37

ofwarren Slovakia has announced more drastic measures as of today:

e.g.
all schools and kindergartens in Bratislava area closed, more closed elsewhere
all sports, cultural, public events banned
preventive checks at all borders
patients' visits banned in all hospitals, visits to retirement homes, prisons, children's homes banned (since March 6th)

AbsentmindedWoman · 09/03/2020 22:39

What would be the best way of disinfecting and storing fresh goods brought in from outside?

I wondered this. We did wipe down a case of wine yesterday with rubbing alcohol, bottle by bottle.

Furfockssake · 09/03/2020 22:40

@ItIsWhatItIsInnit I amazed at the fact that people still believe in two months the world will be the same place. Without any containment in the UK or plans to delay the spread, our entire population would be infected. Over a hundred thousand people would be infected by Easter if rates continue to double every three or four days. I wonder why these people think that life really is going to go on as normal, particularly when the Government are saying it definitely won't be.

NeverSurrender · 09/03/2020 22:41

I just watched the press conference and feel a lot more reassured by the two experts. What they said about getting the timing right to implement measures makes more sense. I do think there is more that could be done- but then really I don't know much about epidemics! Boris Johnson may as well have not been there he came across as not having a clue. My understanding from it was that in a couple of weeks things will start to change in terms of isolating and all that comes with it. I just have to hope the experts know what they are talking about and BJ listens to them!

NeverSurrender · 09/03/2020 22:44

Also to add- they said that any measures taken need to be sustainable- the country does need to keep moving , and if some types of workers are out of work it will grind to a halt. This will have an impact on food and medication/healthcare.

Furfockssake · 09/03/2020 22:45

Has anyone seen this ..

It takes five days on average for people to start showing the symptoms of coronavirus, scientists have confirmed.
The Covid-19 disease, which can cause a fever, cough and breathing problems, is spreading around the world and has already affected more than 111,000 people.
The US team analysed known cases from China and other countries to understand more about the disease.
Most people who develop symptoms do so on or around day five.
Anyone who is symptom-free by day 12 is unlikely to get symptoms, but they may still be infectious carriers.

I help out at a weekly lunch club for the elderly and have discussed with other volunteers what we should do.

The consensus was that the media is scare-mongering.

I am horrified that this attitude still prevails. Can't people see what is happening?

tryingtoprep · 09/03/2020 22:47

@Newleafinspring It would need to include other household members if we want to protect those at higher risk. I have an underlying condition but don't live alone. I wish DP was allowed to work from home.

With home deliveries. I decanted what I could into my own storage containers, foil, or cling film depending on product, binned the store wrapping, then washed hands. Just make a note of the use by dates.

mrshoho · 09/03/2020 22:50

Yes I got the same NeverSurrender watching the press conference. I can understand what they are saying about getting the timing right and yes in two weeks time we will be living in very different times. The only part I don't get is why they cant immediately start to cancel large public gatherings now.

covetingthepreciousthings · 09/03/2020 22:51

Italy is in lockdown, this is pretty unprecedented, id say this is more than just scaremongering..

FlamingoAndJohn · 09/03/2020 22:52

If we are all stuck indoors eating our stashed pasta for two weeks we are going to have an even bigger obesity problem when this is over.

Dramalamaindeed · 09/03/2020 22:52

I get married in 8 weeks, start of May.

Trying to think realistically. Everyone is telling me it’ll be absolutely fine and the wedding will go ahead. I have insurance but I’ve planned this for two years and I am mentally and physically preparing for it everyday. Quite stressed by the final planning stages but what do you think the chances are it’ll go ahead?

I’m getting more and more doubtful especially after Italy’s news.
